Magnetic and quadrupolar order in a one-dimensional ferromagnet with cubic crystal-field anisotropy

Abstract

The zero-temperature phase diagram of a one-dimensional $S=2$ Heisenberg ferromagnet with single-ion cubic anisotropy is studied numerically using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. Evidence is found that although the model does not involve quadrupolar couplings, there is a purely quadrupolar phase for large values of the anisotropy. The phase transition between the magnetic and quadrupolar phases is continuous and it seems to be characterized by Ising critical exponents.

Phase diagram of the three‐dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg anti‐ferromagnetic model

J. C. S. Rocha, B. V. Costa

Abstract In this work we use numerical Monte Carlo techniques to study the phase diagram of the three‐dimensional classical Heisenberg anti‐ferromagnetic (AF) model with single‐ion anisotropy model with an uniform magnetic field applied along the easy axis. Early experimental as well as theoretical calculations have shown that the phase diagram of the model is quite rich. We simulated the model on a simple cubic lattices using the Wang–Landau sampling and Metropolis algorithm. Finite size scaling theory is used to obtain the phase diagram. At low field and low temperature the system exhibits AF order separated from a spin‐flop (SF) phase by a first‐order line. As temperature grows a paramagnetic phase is reached by crossing a second‐order line both from the AF phase and from the SF phase. The critical exponents are obtained for each transition line. Contrary to early works we find that the line separating the SF phase from the paramagnetic phase is in the Ising class of universality.

Critical behavior of the three-dimensional random-anisotropy Heisenberg model

Juan Jesus Ruiz-Lorenzo, M. Dudka, Yurij V. Holovatch

We have studied the critical properties of the three-dimensional random anisotropy Heisenberg model by means of numerical simulations using the Parallel Tempering method. We have simulated the model with two different disorder distributions, cubic and isotropic ones, with two different anisotropy strengths for each disorder class. For the case of the anisotropic disorder, we have found evidence of universality by finding critical exponents and universal dimensionless ratios independent of the strength of the disorder. In the case of isotropic disorder distribution the situation is very involved: we have found two phase transitions in the magnetization channel which are merging for larger lattices remaining a zero magnetization low-temperature phase. Studying this region using a spin-glass order parameter we have found evidence for a spin-glass phase transition. We have estimated effective critical exponents for the spin-glass phase transition for the different values of the strength of the isotropic disorder, discussing the crossover regime.

ON THE CRITICAL BEHAVIOUR OF RANDOM ANISOTROPY MAGNETS: CUBIC ANISOTROPY

M. Dudka, Folk, Yurij V. Holovatch

The critical behaviour of an m -vector model with a local anisotropy axis of random orientation is studied within the field-theoretical renormalization group approach for cubic distribution of anisotropy axis.Expressions for the renormalization group functions are calculated up to the two-loop order and investigated both by an ε = 4 -d expansion and directly at space dimension d = 3 by means of the Pad é-Borel resummation. One accessible stable fixed point indicating a 2nd order ferromagnetic phase transition with dilute Ising-like critical exponents is obtained.

Phase diagram of spin-1 quantum Ising-Heisenberg models

Carla Buzano

The phase diagram at T = 0 of a family of spin-1 quantum Ising-Heisenberg models is studied using a mean-field approximation. The model Hamiltonian is characterized by single ion anisotropy terms D μ , (μ = x, y, z ) and by two positive parameters η x , η y measuring the degree of anisotropy of the interaction. They allow to describe a variety of models: among them the spin-1 Ising-Blume-Capel model (η x = η y = 0), and the isotropic Heisenberg model (η x = η y = 1). Both dipolar and quadrupolar order parameters are used to derive the phase diagram in the parameter space (η x , η y , D μ ). The resulting phase diagram is rather complex as it exhibits first and second order critical transitions as well as multicritical points.

Critical behavior of the quantum Heisenberg model on three-dimensional diamond-type hierarchical lattice

Zou Wei-Ke, Xiang-Mu Kong, Chun-Yang Wang +1 more

With a real-space renormalization-group method, the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model on three-dimensional diamond-type hierarchical lattice is studied, and the phase diagram and critical properties are obtained. For the ferromagnetic system, it is shown that there is a finite-temperature phase transition for Δ=0 where Δ is the anisotropy parameter. The order parameter and critical exponents are also calculated. For the antiferromagnetic model, we find that the critical temperature is not equal to zero for Δ=0 and there is not reentrant behavior on the critical line.

Monte Carlo study of the anisotropic three-dimensional Heisenberg model in a crystal field

Rodrigo Teixeira Santos Freire, J. A. Plascak, B. V. Costa

We study the phase diagram of the three-dimensional classical ferromagnetic Heisenberg model with an easy-plane crystalline anisotropy and an easy-axis exchange anisotropy through Monte Carlo simulations. We employ the Metropolis algorithm together with single-histogram techniques in order to characterize the transitions in each region of the phase diagram. Our results reveal, besides the disordered phase, the existence of Ising-like and XY-like ordered phases which are separated by a first-order transition line.
