On the Estimate of the Spin-Gap in Quasi-1D Heisenberg Antiferromagnets from Nuclear Spin-Lattice Relaxation

Abstract

We present a careful analysis of the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate l/ T 1 in gapped quasi-1D Heisenberg antiferromagnets. It is found that in order to estimate the value of the gap correctly from l/ T 1 , the peculiar features of the dispersion curve for the triplet excitations must be taken into account. The temperature dependence of l/ T 1 due to two-magnon processes is reported for different values of the ratio r = J ⌊ / J ‖ between the superexchange constants in a 2-leg ladder. As an illustrative example, we compare our results to the experimental findings for 63 Cu l/ T 1 in the dimerized chains and 2-leg ladders contained in Sr 14 Cu 24 O 41

Staggered-spin contribution to nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in two-leg antiferromagnetic spin- 12 ladders

Dmitri A. Ivanov, Patrick A. Lee

We study the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ${1/T}_{1}$ in the two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder. More specifically, we consider the contribution to ${1/T}_{1}$ from the processes with momentum transfer $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}).$ In the limit of weak coupling between the two chains, this contribution is of activation type with gap $2\ensuremath{\Delta}$ at low temperatures $(\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is the spin gap), but crosses over to a slowly decaying temperature dependence at the crossover temperature $T\ensuremath{\approx}\ensuremath{\Delta}.$ This crossover possibly explains the recent high-temperature NMR results on ladder-containing cuprates by Imai et al.

Observation of a Spin Gap in Sr Cu 2 O 3 Comprising Spin-½ Quasi-1D Two-Leg Ladders

Masaki Azuma, Zenji Hiroi, M. Takano +2 more

Magnetic properties of Sr${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{5}$, containing two-leg and three-leg $S=\frac{1}{2}$ ladders made of antiferromagnetic Cu-O-Cu linear bonds, were investigated. The susceptibility of the two-leg ladder material, Sr${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, is characteristic of thermal excitation from a nonmagnetic ground state with a spin gap of about 420 K, while the susceptibility of ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{5}$, containing three-leg ladders, reflects a gapless spin excitation spectrum. The temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate, $\frac{1}{{T}_{1}}$, of $^{63}\mathrm{Cu}$ NMR also indicates the existence of a spin gap only for Sr${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. The spin gap we observed for Sr${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ confirms a recent theoretical prediction for the magnetic behavior of spin = \textonehalf{} antiferromagnetically coupled Heisenberg chains.

Magnon-induced nuclear relaxation in the quantum critical region of a Heisenberg linear chain

Michael J. R. Hoch

The low-temperature properties of spin-1/2 one-dimensional (1D) Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) chains which have relatively small exchange couplings between the spins can be tuned using laboratory-scale magnetic fields. Magnetization measurements, made as a function of temperature, provide phase diagrams for these systems and establish the quantum critical point (QCP). The evolution of the spin dynamics behavior with temperature and applied field in the quantum critical (QC) region, near the QCP, is of particular interest and has been experimentally investigated in a number of 1D HAFs using neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance as the preferred techniques. In the QC phase both quantum and thermal spin fluctuations are present. As a result of extended spin correlations in the chains, magnon excitations are important at finite temperatures. An expression for the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/{T}_{1}$ of probe nuclei in the QC phase of 1D HAFs is obtained by considering Raman scattering processes which induce nuclear spin flips. The relaxation rate expression, which involves the temperature and the chemical potential, predicts scaling behavior of $1/{T}_{1}$ consistent with recent experimental findings for quasi-1D HAF systems. A simple relationship between $1/{T}_{1}$ and the deviation of the magnetization from saturation (${M}_{S}\ensuremath{-}M$) is predicted for the QC region.

Temperature Dependence of Energy Gaps in Spin—1/2 Dimerized Heisenberg Chain

江学范, 陈鸿

We present a method which combines a thermal coherent state approach with a self-consistent quantum theory to investigate the spin-1/2 dimerized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. It is found that both excitation gaps between the ground state and two lowest excited modes, the triplet one-magnon excitation and the singlet two-magnon bound state decrease monotonically with increasing temperature. Our results are consitent with those obtained from the other approximations.

Longitudinal excitations in quantum antiferromagnets

Yang Xian

By extending our recently proposed magnon-density waves to low dimensions, we investigate, using a microscopic many-body approach, the longitudinal excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) and quasi-2d Heisenberg antiferromagnetic systems on a bipartite lattice with a general spin quantum number. We obtain the full energy spectrum of the longitudinal mode as a function of the coupling constants in the original lattice Hamiltonian and find that it always has a nonzero energy gap if the ground state has a long-range order and becomes gapless for the pure isotropic 1d model. The numerical value of the minimum gap in our approximation agrees with that of a longitudinal mode observed in the quasi-1d antiferromagnetic compound KCuF3 at low temperature. It will be interesting to compare values of the energy spectrum at other momenta if their experimental results are available.
