Abstract

We have studied the Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction on a triangular lattice for a half-filled band. At the point of particle-hole symmetry the model could be analysed in detail in two opposite regimes of the parameter space. Using a real-space renormalization group (RG) we calculate the ground-state energy and the local moment over the whole parameter space. The RG results obey the exact results in the respective limits. In the intermediate region of the parameter space, the RG results clearly show the effects of the non-bipartite geometry of the lattice as well as the absence of symmetry in the reversal of the sign of the hopping matrix element.

Ground-state phase diagram of the triangular lattice Hubbard model by the density-matrix renormalization group method

Tomonori Shirakawa, Takami Tohyama, J. Kokalj +2 more

Two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to examine the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half-filling. The calculation reveals two discontinuities in the double occupancy with increasing the repulsive Hubbard interaction $U$ at ${U}_{\mathrm{c}1}\ensuremath{\sim}7.8t$ and ${U}_{\mathrm{c}2}\ensuremath{\sim}9.9t$ ($t$ being the hopping integral), indicating that there are three phases separated by first-order transitions. The absence of any singularity in physical quantities for $0\ensuremath{\le}U<{U}_{\mathrm{c}1}$ implies a metallic phase in this regime. For $U>{U}_{\mathrm{c}2}$, the local spin density induced by an applied pinning magnetic field exhibits a three sublattice feature, which is compatible with the ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel-ordered state realized in the limit of $U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. For ${U}_{\mathrm{c}1}<U<{U}_{\mathrm{c}2}$, a response to the applied pinning magnetic field is comparable to that in the metallic phase with a relatively large spin correlation length, but showing neither valence bond nor chiral magnetic order, which therefore resembles gapless spin liquid. However, the spin structure factor for the intermediate phase exhibits the maximum at the $\mathrm{K}$ and ${\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ points in the momentum space, which is not compatible to spin liquid with a large spinon Fermi surface. The calculation also finds that the pairing correlation function monotonically decreases with increasing $U$ and thus the superconductivity is unlikely in the intermediate phase.

The generalized Hubbard model in one dimension: a renormalization group study

B Bhattacharyya, Sanchita Sil

We have modified an existing real space renormalization group scheme to remove some physically inconsistent features and used the rectified method to study the ground state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour repulsion and the bond-charge interaction for half filling. For the nearest-neighbour interaction we find a phase diagram which agrees nicely with the Monte Carlo results. For the case of bond-charge interaction we have reproduced some available exact results and found some interesting information in the parameter regime where no exact solution is available.

Renormalization-group study of the Hubbard model

J. E. Hirsch

The ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model is studied using a real-space renormalization-group technique. We first study in detail the one-dimensional case. We find the ground state to be insulating for all finite coupling, in agreement with the exact solution. We compute the ground-state energy, localization length, energy gap, magnitude of the local moment, and spin-density autocorrelation function. For those quantities that are exactly known we find good agreement with the exact results. Using a simple extension of our one-dimensional calculation, we are able to study approximately two- and three-dimensional lattices. We find a Mott transition at finite interaction for these cases. The critical exponents for these transitions are found to satisfy an approximate interdimensional scaling law.

Real-space renormalization-group study of the Hubbard model: A modified scheme

Bibhas Bhattacharyya, Shreekantha Sil

The real-space renormalization-group technique is applied to the Hubbard model on a linear chain with a half-filled band; a recently proposed modified scheme is used for the renormalization of the parameters. The result for the ground-state energy is quite improved with respect to the earlier results of the existing scheme. Both the energy and its derivative with respect to the on-site repulsion term agree reasonably well with the exact solution. However, it is indicated that the calculation of the correlation function and energy gap requires further refinement of this scheme.

Real-space renormalization-group study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Jesús Pérez-Conde, Pierre M. Pfeuty

The one-band two-dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian is analyzed using a real-space renormalization-group block method. The renormalization-group method, previously applied to the one-dimensional case has been extended to two dimensions. It is also shown how to avoid the proliferation of new terms during the process if the shape of the blocks and the symmetries of the kept states are chosen conveniently. We characterize the ground state by its energy per site, the gap of charge excitations, the double occupancy, and the effective hopping. The system shows an insulating behavior in the case of half filling for all nonzero interaction parameter, U, if the hopping is isotropic (${\mathit{t}}_{\mathit{y}}$=${\mathit{t}}_{\mathit{x}}$); that is to say, the gap opens for all positive U, as in the one-dimensional case. If the hopping anisotropy, \ensuremath{\alpha}=${\mathit{t}}_{\mathit{y}}$/${\mathit{t}}_{\mathit{x}}$, is different from the unity and zero the ground state is a conductor up to a critical value (U/t${)}_{\mathit{c}1}$, which depends on \ensuremath{\alpha}. We have analyzed in the same way another filling, n=7/9. The system behaves as a conductor, paramagnetic up to a value (U/t${)}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\sim}2 and weakly ferromagnetic for higher values of U.

Density-matrix renormalization-group studies of the alternating Hubbard model

Hanbin Pang, Shoudan Liang

Discrepancies between the single-particle band structure and the exact many-particle behavior are particularly striking in one-dimensional systems. The one-dimensional alternating Hubbard model is especially interesting as a nontrivial model for conjugated polymer chains, such as polyacetelyne. We study this model for chains of 60 sites using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We obtain the first electronic and magnetic excited-state energies at half filling as a function of an alternating hopping parameter and on-site electron-electron interaction. We also study the effect of the interaction on the dimerization and discuss its relation to the charge gap and spin triplet gap. In addition, we calculate the local spin and charge densities of some excited states, which manifest a clear crossover from bandlike to strongly correlated behavior.

Two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to examine the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half-filling. The calculation reveals two discontinuities in the double occupancy with increasing the repulsive Hubbard interaction UUU at ${U}_{\mathrm{c}1}\ensuremath{\sim}7.8t$ and ${U}_{\mathrm{c}2}\ensuremath{\sim}9.9t$ (ttt being the hopping integral), indicating that there are three phases separated by first-order transitions. The absence of any singularity in physical quantities for $0\ensuremath{\le}U<{U}_{\mathrm{c}1}$ implies a metallic phase in this regime. For U>Uc2U>{U}_{\mathrm{c}2}U>Uc2, the local spin density induced by an applied pinning magnetic field exhibits a three sublattice feature, which is compatible with the ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel-ordered state realized in the limit of $U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. For Uc1<U<Uc2{U}_{\mathrm{c}1}<U<{U}_{\mathrm{c}2}Uc1<U<Uc2, a response to the applied pinning magnetic field is comparable to that in the metallic phase with a relatively large spin correlation length, but showing neither valence bond nor chiral magnetic order, which therefore resembles gapless spin liquid. However, the spin structure factor for the intermediate phase exhibits the maximum at the K\mathrm{K}K and ${\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ points in the momentum space, which is not compatible to spin liquid with a large spinon Fermi surface. The calculation also finds that the pairing correlation function monotonically decreases with increasing UUU and thus the superconductivity is unlikely in the intermediate phase.
