Small polaron formation in many-particle states of the Hubbard-Holstein model: The one-dimensional case

Abstract

We investigate polaron formation in a many-electron system in the presence of a local repulsion sufficiently strong to prevent local-bipolaron formation. Specifically, we consider a Hubbard-Holstein model of interacting electrons coupled to dispersionless phonons of frequency ω 0 . Numerically solving the model in a small one-dimensional cluster, we find that in the nearly adiabatic case ω 0 < t , the necessary and sufficient condition for the polaronic regime to occur is that the energy gain in the atomic ( i.e. , extremely localized) regime ε pol overcomes the energy of the purely electronic system ε el . In the antiadiabatic case, ω 0 > t , polaron formation is instead driven by the condition of a large ionic displacement g / ω 0 < 1 ( g being the electron-phonon coupling). Dynamical properties of the model in the weak and moderately strong coupling regimes are also analyzed.

Polarons and bipolarons in strongly interacting electron-phonon systems

Gerhard Wellein, Heinrich Röder, Holger Fehske

The Holstein Hubbard and Holstein t-J models are studied for a wide range of phonon frequencies, electron-electron, and electron-phonon interaction strengths on finite lattices with up to ten sites by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization. Previously the necessary truncation of the phononic Hilbert space caused serious limitations to either very small systems (four or even two sites) or to weak electron-phonon coupling, in particular in the adiabatic regime. Using parallel computers we were able to investigate the transition from ``large'' to ``small'' polarons in detail. By resolving the low-lying eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and by calculating the spectral function, we can identify a polaron band in the strong-coupling case, whose dispersion deviates from the free-particle dispersion at low and intermediate phonon frequencies. For two electrons (holes) we establish the existence of bipolaronic states and discuss the formation of a bipolaron band. For the two-dimensional Holstein t-J model, we demonstrate that the formation of hole polarons is favored by strong Coulomb correlations. Analyzing hole-hole correlation functions, we find that hole binding is enhanced as a dynamical effect of the electron-phonon interaction. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Mobile Bipolarons in the Adiabatic Holstein-Hubbard Model in 1 and 2 dimensions

Laurent Proville, S. Aubry

The bound states of two electrons in the adiabatic Holstein-Hubbard model are studied numerically in one and two dimensions from the anticontinuous limit. This model involves a competition between a local electron-phonon coupling (with a classical lattice) which tends to form pairs of electrons and the repulsive Hubbard interaction $U \geq 0$ which tends to break them. In 1D, the ground-state always consists in a pair of localized polarons in a singlet state. They are located at the same site for U=0. Increasing U, there is a first order transition at which the bipolaron becomes a spin singlet pair of two polarons bounded by a magnetic interaction. The pinning mode of the bipolaron soften in the vicinity of this transition leading to a higher mobility of the bipolaron which is tested numerically. In 2D, and for any $U$, the electron-phonon coupling needs to be large enough in order to form small polarons or bipolarons instead of extended electrons. We calculate the phase diagram of the bipolaron involving first order transitions lines with a triple point. A pair of polarons can form three types of bipolarons: a) on a single site at small $U$, b) a spin singlet state on two nearest neighbor sites for larger $U$ as in 1D and c) a new intermediate state obtained as the resonant combination of four 2-sites singlet states sharing a central site, called quadrisinglet. The breathing and pinning internal modes of bipolarons in 2D generally only weakly soften and thus, they are practically not mobile. On the opposite, in the vicinity of the triple point involving the quadrisinglet, both modes exhibit a significant softening. However, it was not sufficient for allowing the existence of a classical mobile bipolaron (at least in that model).

Phonon spectral function of the Holstein polaron

Jan Loos, Martin Hohenadler, Andreas Alvermann +1 more

The phonon spectral function of the one-dimensional Holstein model is obtained within weak and strong-coupling approximations based on analytical self-energy calculations. The characteristic excitations found in the limit of small charge-carrier density are related to the known (electronic) spectral properties of Holstein polarons such as the polaron band dispersion.Particular emphasis is laid on the different physics occurring in the adiabatic and antiadiabatic regimes, respectively.Comparison is made with a cluster approach exploiting exact numerical results on small systems to yield an approximation for the thermodynamic limit. This method, similar to cluster perturbation theory, confirms the analytical findings, and yields accurate results also in the intermediate-coupling regime.

Hole-polaron formation in the two-dimensional Holsteint-Jmodel: A variational Lanczos study

Holger Fehske, Heinrich Röder, Gerhard Wellein +1 more

Polaronic features of dopant-induced charge carriers are manifest in recent experiments on ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4+\mathit{y}}$ and ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ni}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4+\mathit{y}}$. To study the formation of hole (bi)polarons in such systems exhibiting strong Coulomb interactions, the Holstein t-J model is examined by means of a variational diagonalization technqiue for a wide range of phonon frequencies and electron-phonon (EP) couplings on finite square lattices, up to 18 effective sites in size. Including static displacement field, polaron, and squeezing effects, our approach allows for the description of nearly free polarons in the weak-coupling limit as well as for adiabatic Holstein polarons and nonadiabatic Lang-Firsov polarons in the case of strong EP interactions. At low doping levels and low phonon frequencies we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic spin correlations and EP interactions reinforce each other to the effect of lowering the threshold for polaronic self-localization in a strongly distorted lattice. This is contrasted with the nonadiabatic regime, where we observe the formation of Lang-Firsov polarons with moderate polaronic mass enhancement in a nearly undistorted lattice. In the case of two doped holes, the hole binding energy is analyzed in detail and we find that hole binding is enhanced as a dynamical (static) effect of a rather weak (extremely strong) EP interaction for delocalized (self-trapped) polarons. At quarter-filling we notice, in the adiabatic regime, a sequence of transitions as the EP coupling increases from nearly free mobile polarons to a polaronic superlattice and finally to a charge-separated state. The ordering of polarons disappears at higher phonon frequencies.

Two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron

Alexandru Macridin, G. A. Sawatzky, Mark Jarrell

We present a diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of the properties of the Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron on a two-dimensional square lattice. With a small Coulomb repulsion $U$ and with increasing electron-phonon interaction, and when reaching a value about two times smaller than the one corresponding to the transition of light polaron to heavy polaron, the system suffers a sharp transition from a state formed by two weakly bound light polarons to a heavy, strongly bound on-site bipolaron. Aside from this rather conventional bipolaron a new bipolaron state is found for large $U$ at intermediate and large electron-phonon coupling, corresponding to two polarons bound on nearest-neighbor sites. We discuss both the properties of the different bipolaron states and the transition from one state to another. We present a phase diagram in parameter space defined by the electron-phonon coupling and $U$. Our numerical method does not use any artificial approximation and can be easily modified to other bipolaron models with longer range electron-phonon and∕or electron-electron interaction.

Small Bipolarons in the 2-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard Model I The Adiabatic Limit

Laurent Proville, S. Aubry

Abstract. The spatially localized bound states of two electrons in the adiabatic two-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model on a square lattice are investigated both numerically and analytically. The interplay between the electron-phonon coupling g, which tends to form bipolarons and the repulsive Hubbard interaction υ ≥ 0, which tends to break them, generates many different ground-states. There are four domains in the g,υ phase diagram delimited by first order transition lines. Except for the domain at weak electronphonon coupling (small g) where the electrons remain free, the electrons form bipolarons which can 1) be mostly located on a single site (small υ, large g); 2) be an anisotropic pair of polarons lying on two neighboring sites in the magnetic singlet state (large υ, large g); or 3) be a ”quadrisinglet state ” which is the superposition of 4 electronic singlets with a common central site. This quadrisinglet bipolaron is the most stable in a small central domain in between the three other phases. The pinning modes and the Peierls-Nabarro barrier of each of these bipolarons are calculated and the barrier is found to be strongly depressed in the region of stability of the quadrisinglet bipolaron.
