Abstract

Fourth-order cumulants of physical quantities have been used to characterize the nature of a phase transition. In this paper we report some Monte Carlo simulations to illustrate the behavior of fourth-order cumulants of magnetization and energy across second and first-order transitions in the phase diagram of a well know spin-1 Ising model. Simple ideas from the theory of thermodynamic fluctuations are used to account for the behavior of these cumulants.

Problem of Phase Transition in Spin-fluctuation Theory

Nikolai Borisovich Melnikov, Georgii Vitalievich Paradezhenko

A first-order phase transition is a characteristic feature of the Gaussian approximation in spin-fluctuation theory. We describe a method for taking into account the fourth-order terms of the free energy expansion using partial averaging. In the example of the Ising model, we show that renormalization of the magnetic susceptibility leads to the second-order phase transition, which is experimentally observed in metals. Near the phase transition, we use the parameter substitution method to compute temperature dependencies. We perform a qualitative analysis and explain the mechanism of the renormalization.

A Monte Carlo study of the Falicov-Kimball model in the perturbative regime

Grzegorz Musiał, L. Dębski, Jacek Wojtkiewicz

Finite-temperature properties of the Falicov-Kimball model on the square lattice have been studied in the perturbative regime, i.e., for t/U⪡1, where t is the hopping constant and U denotes the Coulomb interaction strength. In our study, we have determined the phase diagram of the model in the second-order of the perturbation theory, where the antiferromagnetic Ising model in the magnetic field emerges. In the fourth-order, where our model constitutes the Ising model with more complicated frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions, the sketch of the phase diagram was established. The Monte Carlo method was employed and the behavior of Binder cumulants based on the order parameters was analyzed to determine the type of ordering and phase boundaries in the diagram.

Monte Carlo Simulation of First Order Phase Transitions

Chunlei Wang, J. C. Li, M. L. Zhao +3 more

Monte Carlo simulation with Metropolis algorithm has been performed on a cubic Ising lattice with four-spin couplings. Temperature dependence of the spin average and average energy has been obtained. We found that the phase transition is of first order when the strength of four-spin coupling is stronger a critical value, and this critical value is of lattice size dependence. Binder cumulants still can be used to determine the second order phase transition temperature. For first order phase transition, the spin average disappears abruptly at the temperature of the average energy being a third of the ground state energy.

Phase diagrams and hysteresis behavior of the mixed spin-7/2 and spin-1/2 Ising model

El Antari, A., Saadi, H., Hajaj, Y. +4 more

The mixed spin-7/2 and spin-1/2 Ising model with a crystal field in the absence and presence of an external longitudinal magnetic field is investigated within the framework both of the renormalization group (RG) method and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). First, we have determined the ground-state phase diagram. Then, using RG technique, the finite temperature phase diagrams of this model are plotted for the two- and three-dimensional cases by following the flow in the parameters space of the Hamiltonian and evaluating the free energy and its isotherm derivative at low temperatures. Our results show that the model exhibits first- and second-order phase transitions as well as critical end-points. In addition, by linearizing the RG transformation at the vicinity of the fixed points of the second-order transition, we have determined the critical exponents. The MCS is also employed to validate the results obtained previously by renormalization, and to examine the influence of an external magnetic field on the magnetic properties and hysteresis loops of the system.

A Semi-Phenomenological Theory of the Second Order Phase Transitions in Spin Systems. I

Masuo Suzuki

A semi-phenomenological theory is developed on the basis of some assumptions in order to study the singularities of thermodynamic quantities in the vicinity of the Curie point. First, microscopic expressions are found for the coefficients in the expansion of the thermodynamic potential in terms of cumulants. Cumulants of all order are calculated in the one-dimensional Ising model, and the series expansion of the fourth order cumulant is also obtained in the two-dimensional Ising model. The three-dimensional Heisenberg model is also discussed, using the result of Rushbrooke et al. In all cases, the fourth order coefficient in the expansion of the thermodynamic potential tends to zero at the Curie points. And, in the last case, the eighth order coefficient diverges at the Curie point.

Phase transitions in the Ising model on a triangular lattice with different values of interlayer exchange interaction

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, М. К. Бадиев

The Monte Carlo method was used to study the phase transitions and thermodynamic properties of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a layered triangular lattice at various values of interlayer exchange interaction. A number of investigations have been carried out for the ratios of the intralayer (J1) and interlayer (J2) exchange interactions within the range of r = J2/J1 = 0.01–1.0. The nature of the phase transitions was studied using the fourth-order Binder cumulant method and histogram data analysis. It has been shown that in the considered range r, the transition from a disordered phase to an ordered phase is a second-order phase transition.
