Anisotropic suppression of quasiparticle weight in two-dimensional electron system with partially flat Fermi surface: two-loop renormalization-group analysis

Abstract

Two-loop renormalization-group analysis for a two-dimensional electron system with a partially flat Fermi surface has been carried out. We found that, {\it irrespective of pairing mechanism}, the quasiparticle weight is anisotropically suppressed due to logarithmically singular processes in the flat regions of the Fermi surface. When the energy scale decreases, the quasiparticle weight is the most strongly suppressed around the center of the flat region, which qualitatively agrees with the anisotropic pseudogap behavior suggested through the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments for underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$.

Anisotropic renormalization-group flow of quasiparticle weight in a two-dimensional electron system with a partially flat Fermi surface

Jun‐ichiro Kishine, Kenji Yonemitsu

Two-loop renormalization-group (RG) analysis for a two-dimensional electron system with a partially flat Fermi surface has been carried out. We found that the RG flow of the quasiparticle weight depends on the location of the electron wave number $\mathit{k}$ on the Fermi surface due to the kinematical restriction to the logarithmically divergent processes in the flat regions of the Fermi surface.

Field-theoretical renormalization group for a flat two-dimensional Fermi surface

Hermann Freire, Eberth de Almeida Correa, Álvaro Antônio Bandeira Ferraz

We implement an explicit two-loop calculation of the coupling functions and the self-energy of interacting fermions with a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface in the framework of the field theoretical renormalization group (RG) approach. Throughout the calculation both the Fermi surface and the Fermi velocity are assumed to be fixed and unaffected by interactions. We show that in two dimensions, in a weak coupling regime, there is no significant change in the RG flow compared to the well-known one-loop results available in the literature. However, if we extrapolate the flow to a moderate coupling regime there are interesting new features associated with an anisotropic suppression of the quasiparticle weight $Z$ along the Fermi surface, and the vanishing of the renormalized coupling functions for several choices of the external momenta.

Quasiparticle Anisotropy and Pseudogap Formation from the Weak-Coupling Renormalization Group Point of View

A. A. Katanin, A. P. Kampf

Using the one-loop functional renormalization group technique, we evaluate the self-energy in the weak-coupling regime of the 2D t-t(') Hubbard model. At van Hove (vH) band fillings and at low temperatures, the quasiparticle weight along the Fermi surface (FS) continuously vanishes on approaching the (pi,0) point where the quasiparticle concept is invalid. Away from vH band fillings the quasiparticle peak is formed inside an anisotropic pseudogap and the self-energy has the conventional Fermi-liquid characteristics near the Fermi level. The spectral weight of the quasiparticle features is reduced on parts of the FS between the near vicinity of hot spots and the FS points closest to (pi,0) and (0,pi).

Renormalization group for two-dimensional fermions with a flat Fermi surface

Sébastien Dusuel, F. Vistulo de Abreu, Benoît Douçot

We present a renormalization-group analysis of two-dimensional interacting fermion systems with a closed and partially flat Fermi surface. Numerical solutions of the one-loop flow equations show that for a bare local repulsion, the system evolves through three different regimes as the typical energy is lowered: a high-energy transient with a strong competition between particle-particle and particle-hole channels, an intermediate regime with dominant spin-density wave correlations, and finally a ``hot spot'' regime exhibiting d-wave superconductivity. We study, mostly by analytical methods, how this flow pattern depends on the number N of Fermi-surface patches used in the numerical solution. This clearly indicates that the final regime requires vanishingly small microscopic interactions, for the one-loop approximation to be valid, as N is going to infinity.

Anisotropic pseudogap in the half-filling 2-d Hubbard model at finite T

Taiichirou Saikawa, Ferraz, A.

We have studied the pseudogap formation in the single-particle spectra of the half-filling two-dimensional Hubbard model. Using a Green's function with the one-loop self-energy correction of the spin and charge fluctuations, we have numerically calculated the self-energy, the spectral function, and the density of states in the weak-coupling regime at finite temperature. Pseudogap formations have been observed in both the density of states and the spectral function at the Fermi level. The pseudogap in the spectral function is explained by the non-Fermi-liquid-like nature of the self-energy. The anomalous behavior in the self-energy is caused by both the strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and the nesting condition on the non-interacting Fermi surface. In the present approximation, we find a logarithmic singularity in the integrand of the imaginary part of the self-energy. Concerning the energy dependence of the spectral function and the self-energy, two theorems are proved. They give a necessary condition in the self-energy to produce the pseudogap at the Fermi level. The pseudogap in the spectral function is highly momentum dependent on the Fermi surface. It opens initially in the $(\pm π,0)$, $(0,\pm π)$ regions as the normal state pseudogap observed in the high-$T_c$ superconductors and if the interaction is increased, it spreads to other Fermi surface sectors. The anisotropy of the pseudogap is produced by the low-energy enhancement of the spin excitation around ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$ and the flatness of the band dispersion around the saddle point.
