Abstract

In a superconducting quantum point contact, dynamics of the superconducting phase is coupled to the transitions between the subgap states. We compute this coupling and derive the two-level Hamiltonian of the contact.

Andreev Level Qubit

We investigate the dynamics of a two-level Andreev bound state system in a transmissive quantum point contact embedded in an rf SQUID. Coherent coupling of the Andreev levels to the circulating supercurrent allows manipulation and readout of the level states. The two-level Hamiltonian for the Andreev levels is derived, and the effect of interaction with the quantum fluctuations of the induced flux is studied. We also consider an inductive coupling of qubits and discuss the relevant SQUID parameters for qubit operation and readout.

Dynamics and phonon-induced decoherence of Andreev level qubit

Alex Zazunov, Vitaly S. Shumeiko, Goran P. Wendin +1 more

We present a detailed theory for the Andreev level qubit, a system consisting of a highly transmissive quantum point contact embedded in a superconducting loop. The two-level Hamiltonian for Andreev levels interacting with quantum phase fluctuations is derived by using a path integral method. We also derive a kinetic equation describing qubit decoherence due to interaction of the Andreev levels with acoustic phonons. The collision terms are nonlinear due to the fermionic nature of the Andreev states, leading to slow nonexponential relaxation and dephasing of the qubit at temperatures smaller than the qubit level spacing.

Supercurrent and Andreev bound state dynamics in superconducting quantum point contacts under microwave irradiation

F. S. Bergeret, Pauli Virtanen, Asier Ozaeta +2 more

We present an extensive theoretical analysis of the supercurrent of a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transparency in the presence of a microwave field. Our paper is mainly based on two different approaches: a two-level model that describes the dynamics of the Andreev bound states in these systems and a fully microscopic method based on the Keldysh--Green function technique. This combination provides both a deep insight into the physics of irradiated Josephson junctions and quantitative predictions for arbitrary range of parameters. The main predictions of our analysis are: (i) for weak fields and low temperatures, the microwaves can induce transitions between the Andreev states, leading to a large suppression of the supercurrent at certain values of the phase; (ii) at strong fields, the current-phase relation is strongly distorted and the corresponding critical current does not follow a simple Bessel-function-like behavior; and (iii) at finite temperatures, the microwave field can enhance the critical current by means of transitions connecting the continuum of states outside the gap region and the Andreev states inside the gap. Our paper is of relevance for a large variety of superconducting weak links as well as for the proposals of using the Andreev bound states of a point contact for quantum computing applications.

Controlled dephasing of Andreev states in superconducting quantum point contacts

Marcelo A. Despósito, A. Levy Yeyati

We have studied the relaxation and dephasing processes in a superconducting quantum point contact induced by the interaction with an electromagnetic environment. Based on a density matrix approach we obtain the rates for the dissipative dynamics as function of the transmission, the phase difference on the contact, and the external impedance. Our calculation allows us to determine the appropriate range of parameters for the observation of coherent oscillations in the current through the contact.

Circuit quantum electrodynamics with a superconducting quantum point contact

Guillermo Romero, Ion Lizuain, Vitaly S. Shumeiko +2 more

We consider a superconducting quantum point contact in a circuit quantum electrodynamics setup. We study three different configurations, attainable with current technology, where a quantum point contact is coupled galvanically to a coplanar waveguide resonator. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the strong and ultrastrong coupling regimes can be achieved with realistic parameters, allowing the coherent exchange between a superconducting quantum point contact and a quantized intracavity field.

Thermal noise in superconducting quantum point contacts

A. Martín‐Rodero, A. Levy Yeyati, Francisco José García-Vidal

We present a theory for the frequency-dependent current fluctuations in superconducting quantum point contacts (SQPC) within the dc transport regime. This theory is valid for any barrier transparency between the tunnel and ballistic limits, yielding an analytical expression for the fluctuations spectrum in the subgap region. It is shown that the level of noise in a quasiballistic SQPC may have a huge increase in comparison with the case of a normal contact carrying the same average current. The effect of this high level of noise on the actual observability of the current-phase relation for a ballistic point contact is discussed in connection with recent experimental measurements.
