Abstract

The first-order phase transition in the three-state Potts model with long-range interactions decaying as ${1/r}^{1+\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ has been examined by numerical simulations using the recently proposed Luijten-Bl\"ote algorithm. By applying scaling arguments to the interface free energy, the Binder's fourth-order cumulant, and the specific heat maximum, the change in the character of the transition through variation of parameter \ensuremath{\sigma} was studied.

First-order phase transition in $1d$ Potts model with long-range interactions

Katarina Uzelac, Zvonko Glumac

The first-order phase transition in the one-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with long-range interactions decaying with distance as $1/r^{1+σ}$ has been studied by Monte Carlo numerical simulations for $0 < σ\le 1$ and integer values of $q > 2$. On the basis of finite-size scaling analysis of interface free energy $ΔF_L$, specific heat and Binder's fourth order cumulant, we obtain the first-order transition which occurs for $σ$ below a threshold value $σ_c(q)$.

First-order transitions in large-q one-dimensional Potts model with power-law decaying interactions

Zvonko Glumac, Katarina Uzelac

We have performed exact analytical calculations of the cluster probability distribution and interface free energy in the finite q-state Potts chains with interactions decaying with distance r as r^(1+sigma). By presenting the partition function in form of the polynomial in q, the advantage of using the Hamiltonian configurations compared with graph or connectivity approach was examined. Scaling analysis of the probability performed for large q (q >= 16) yields the first-order phase transition for 0 < sigma < 1.

The Free Energy of the Potts Model: From the Continuous to the First-Order Transition Region

Tanmoy Bhattacharya A, R. Lacaze, A Morel

We present a large- q expansion of the 2d q -states Potts model free energies up to order 9 in 1/√ q . Its analysis leads us to an ansatz which, in the first-order region, incorporates properties inferred from the known critical regime at q = 4, and predicts, for q > 4, the n -th energy cumulant scales as the power (3 n /2 - 2) of the correlation length. The parameter-free energy distributions reproduce accurately, without reference to any interface effect, the numerical data obtained in a simulation for q = 10 with lattices of linear dimensions up to L = 50. The pure-phase specific heats are predicted to be much larger, at q ⩽ 10, than the values extracted from the current finite-size scaling analysis of the extrema. Implications for safe numerical determinations of interface tensions are discussed.

Short-time dynamics of the 1D three-state long-range Potts model

Zvonko Glumac, Katarina Uzelac

We investigate the short-time dynamics of the one-dimensional q = 3 Potts model with a power-law decaying interactions of the form $r− (1+\sigma)$. This model is known to exhibit both first- and second-order transition regimes, which depend on the parameter of range $\sigma$ and are separated by a q-dependent tricritical point sigma_c(q) [1]. The location of this point, where the first-order transition becomes extremely weak presents difficulties both for RG approaches and for equilibrium numerical simulations [2-3]. We examine the first-order transition regime and its onset at sigma_c by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, which recently appeared to be efficient in detecting weak first-order phase transitions [4]. We consider the short-time relaxation processes for magnetization and its higher momenta starting from high and low temperatures. We analyse the appearance of two pseudo critical temperatures characteristic for the first-order transition regime, which should merge at the tricritical point. [1] Z. Glumac and K. Uzelac, Phys. Potts model with algebraically decaying interactions in two dimensions

E. Bayong, H. T. Diep

We study the 2d Potts model with long-range interaction algebraically decayed as 1/rd+σ using extensive Monte Carlo simulations to determine the nature of the phase transition with histogram technique. The model is shown to exhibit either a first-order transition or a second-order phase transition with critical exponents depending on σ and q. For q=3 there is a critical value of σ below which a first-order transition occurs. For q⩾5 the transition is of first order for any σ.

Critical behaviour of the 1D q-state Potts model with long-range interactions

Zvonko Glumac, Katarina Uzelac

The critical behaviour of the one-dimensional q-state Potts model with long-range interactions decaying with distance r as r −(1+σ) has been studied in the wide range of parameters 0 < σ ≤ 1 and 1 16 ≤ q ≤ 64. A transfer matrix has been constructed for a truncated range of interactions for integer and continuous q, and finite range scaling has been applied. Results for the phase diagram and the correlation length critical exponent are presented.
