Abstract

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon in a two-dimensional (2D) system of bosons subjected to a harmonic-oscillator-type confining potential. The interaction among the 2D bosons is described by a \ensuremath{\delta} function in configuration space. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation within the two-fluid model we calculate the condensate fraction, ground-state energy, and specific heat of the system. Our results indicate that interacting bosons have similar behavior to those of an ideal system for weak interactions.

Bose-Einstein condensation in a one-dimensional interacting system due to power-law trapping potentials

We examine the possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation in one-dimensional interacting Bose gas subjected to confining potentials of the form ${V}_{\mathrm{ext}}{(x)=V}_{0}(|x|{/a)}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}},$ in which $\ensuremath{\gamma}<2,$ by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation within the semiclassical two-fluid model. The condensate fraction, chemical potential, ground state energy, and specific heat of the system are calculated for various values of interaction strengths. Our results show that a significant fraction of the particles is in the lowest energy state for a finite number of particles at low temperature, indicating a phase transition for weakly interacting systems.

Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional trap

Sanghoon Kim, C. Won, Sung Dahm Oh +1 more

The theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional(2D) harmonic trap is developed from 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The 2D interaction strength is obtained from a 2D collision theory. We show the realization of 2D condensation of trapped Bose atoms directly by obtaining the stable solutions for the condensate wave function from the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We calculate the ground-state energy of the 2D system, and also the wave function of the 2D vortex state. In particular, the 2D energy state becomes less stable than the 3D case with the number of trapped atoms. The results of the 2D Bose condensation are also compared with those of the well-known 3D case.

Bose-Einstein condensation in anisotropic harmonic traps

Tor Haugset, Hårek Haugerud, Jens O. Andersen

We study the thermodynamic behavior of an ideal gas of bosons trapped in a three-dimensional anisotropic harmonic-oscillator potential. The condensate fraction as well as the specific heat is calculated using the Euler-Maclaurin approximation. For a finite number of particles there is no phase transition, but there is a well-defined temperature at which the condensation starts. We also consider condensation in lower dimensions, and, for one-dimensional systems, we discuss the dependence of the condensate fraction and heat capacity on the ensemble used.

A two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing Bose-Einstein condensation in an axial symmetry non-harmonic trap is solved.Converged wave functions, chemical potentials, and internal energies in Bose-Einstein condensation are obtained.Ground-state of Bose-Einstein condensation with atomic interaction is investigated.A comparison between harmonic and non-harmonic traps is reported.

THE IMPACT OF INTERACTION ON BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATION OF ULTRACOLD ATOMIC GASES IN TRAPPED POTENTIALS

ALEM MEBRAHATU, Seid Nigatu Fentaw

In this paper, we discuss theoretically the behavior of ideal Bose-Einstein gases in a 3D box and in a harmonic trap. We make use of the mean filed theory based on the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation which describes the main features of Bose-Einstein condensation. We investigate and discuss the density profiles and the ground state properties of a trapped condensate confined in harmonic trap. We found out that in an attractive interaction, the gas tends to increase its central density in order to lower the interaction energy.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Confined Atomic Gases at Ultra Low Temperatures

Mohammed Serhan

In this work I solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing an atomic gas confined in an isotropic harmonic trap by introducing a variational wavefunction of Gaussian type. The chemical potential of the system is calculated and the solutions are discussed in the weakly and strongly interacting regimes. For the attractive system with negative scattering length the maximum number of atoms that can be put in the condensate without collapse begins is calculated.
