Phase diagram of the antiferromagneticXXZmodel in the presence of an external magnetic field

Abstract

The anisotropic $s=\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of an external magnetic field is studied by using the standard quantum renormalization group (RG). We obtain the critical line of the transition from the partially magnetized (PM) phase to the saturated ferromagnetic phase. The crossover exponent between the PM phase and antiferromagnetic Ising phase is evaluated. Our results show that the anisotropy $(\ensuremath{\Delta})$ term is relevant and causes crossover. These results indicate that the standard RG approach yields fairly good values for the critical points and their exponents. The magnetization curve, correlation functions, and the ground state energy per site are obtained and compared with the known exact results.

Anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the presence of a magnetic field for arbitrary dimension and spin

C. Millán, David Gottlieb

In this work we study the Heisenberg XXZ antiferromagnetic model for spin S and dimension d in the presence of an external longitudinal magnetic field. First, we essay a variational approach which uses as trial function a version of the analytic expression for the ground state given by the paired nonmagnetic excitation (PNME) theory [M. Lagos and G. G. Cabrera, Solid State Commun. 67, 221 (1988); Phys. Rev. B 38, 659 (1988)], generalized in order to incorporate the external field. The ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility are obtained. Subsequently, we solve the problem numerically for a chain of 12 spins (S=1 and S=3/2) using the Lancz\"os method [E. Dagotto and A. Moreo, Phys. Rev. D 31, 865 (1985)]. The two approaches give excellent concordance over a wide range of the parameters of the model. We show that our analytic trial function represents accurately the ground state of the system for anisotropies ranging from the Ising limit to the almost isotropic Heisenberg model for all values of the field. Moreover, it accounts for the several antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases occurring for different values of the magnetic field with the same precision. The critical fields of the transitions are predicted correctly. Also, results for various spin values S in two and three dimensions are presented.

Ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic anisotropic S=1 Heisenberg spin chains

D. Peters, Ian P. McCulloch, Walter Selke

Using (infinite) density-matrix renormalization-group techniques, ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic $S=1$ Heisenberg spin chains with exchange and single-site anisotropies in an external field are studied. The phase diagram is known to display a plenitude of interesting phases. We elucidate quantum phase transitions between the supersolid and spin-liquid phases as well as the spin-liquid and ferromagnetic phases. Analyzing spin-correlation functions in the spin-liquid phase, commensurate and (two distinct) incommensurate regions are identified.

Phase diagrams and hysteresis behavior of the mixed spin-7/2 and spin-1/2 Ising model

El Antari, A., Saadi, H., Hajaj, Y. +4 more

The mixed spin-7/2 and spin-1/2 Ising model with a crystal field in the absence and presence of an external longitudinal magnetic field is investigated within the framework both of the renormalization group (RG) method and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). First, we have determined the ground-state phase diagram. Then, using RG technique, the finite temperature phase diagrams of this model are plotted for the two- and three-dimensional cases by following the flow in the parameters space of the Hamiltonian and evaluating the free energy and its isotherm derivative at low temperatures. Our results show that the model exhibits first- and second-order phase transitions as well as critical end-points. In addition, by linearizing the RG transformation at the vicinity of the fixed points of the second-order transition, we have determined the critical exponents. The MCS is also employed to validate the results obtained previously by renormalization, and to examine the influence of an external magnetic field on the magnetic properties and hysteresis loops of the system.

Phase diagram of quantum systems: Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Pietro Gianinetti, Alberto Parola

An approach for studying phase transitions in systems with quantum degrees of freedom is discussed. Starting from the microscopic Hamiltonian of a quantum model, we first derive a set of exact differential equations for the free energy and the correlation functions describing the effects of fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the system. These equations reproduce the full renormalization group structure in the neighborhood of a critical point keeping, at the same time, full information on the nonuniversal properties of the model. As a concrete application we investigate the phase diagram of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a staggered external magnetic field. At long wavelengths the known relationship to the quantum nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model naturally emerges from our approach. By representing the two point function in an approximate analytical form, we obtain a closed partial differential equation which is then solved numerically. The results in three dimensions are in good agreement with available quantum Monte Carlo simulations and series expansions. More refined approximations to the general framework presented here and few applications to other models are briefly discussed.

Quantum renormalization group of XYZ model in a transverse magnetic field

A. Langari

We have studied the zero-temperature phase diagram of $\mathrm{XYZ}$ model in the presence of transverse magnetic field. We show that small anisotropy $(0<~\ensuremath{\Delta}<1)$ is not relevant to change the universality class. The phase diagram consists of two antiferromagnetic ordering and a paramagnetic phase. We have obtained the critical exponents, fixed points, and running of coupling constants by implementing the standard quantum renormalization group. The continuous phase transition from antiferromagnetic (spin-flop) phase to a paramagnetic one is in the universality class of Ising model in transverse field. Numerical exact diagonalization has been done to justify our results. We have also addressed the application of our findings to the recent experiments on ${\mathrm{Cs}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoCl}}_{4}.$

Critical properties and phase diagram of quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a random magnetic field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

Aušrius Juozapavičius, Laura Urba, S. Caprara +1 more

The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic $\mathrm{XY}$ spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.
