Static and dynamic structure factors in the Haldane phase of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain

The excitation spectra of the $T=0$ dynamic structure factors for the spin, dimer, and trimer fluctuation operators as well as for the center fluctuation operator in the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg model with isotropic bilinear $(J\mathrm{cos}\ensuremath{\theta})$ and biquadratic $(J\mathrm{sin}\ensuremath{\theta})$ exchange are investigated via the recursion method for systems with up to $N=18$ sites over the predicted range, $\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}/4<\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}\ensuremath{\pi}/4,$ of the topologically ordered Haldane phase. The four static and dynamic structure factors probe the ordering tendencies in the various coupling regimes and the elementary and composite excitations which dominate the $T=0$ dynamics. At $\ensuremath{\theta}=\mathrm{arctan}\frac{1}{3}$ (valence-bond solid point), the dynamically relevant spectra in the invariant subspaces with total spin ${S}_{T}=0,1,2$ are dominated by a branch of magnon states ${(S}_{T}=1),$ by continua of two-magnon scattering states ${(S}_{T}=0,1,2),$ and by discrete branches of two-magnon bound states with positive interaction energy ${(S}_{T}=0,2).$ The dimer and trimer spectra at $q=\ensuremath{\pi}$ are found to consist of single modes with $N$-independent excitation energies ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{D}/|{e}_{0}|=5$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{T}/|{e}_{0}|=6,$ where ${e}_{0}{=E}_{0}/N$ is the ground-state energy per site. The basic structure of the dynamically relevant excitation spectrum remains the same over a substantial parameter range within the Haldane phase. At the transition to the dimerized phase $(\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}/4),$ the two-magnon excitations turn into two-spinon excitations.

Low-energy physics of isotropic spin-1 chains in the critical and Haldane phases

Moritz Binder, Thomas Barthel

Using a matrix product state algorithm with infinite boundary conditions, we compute high-resolution dynamic spin and quadrupolar structure factors in the thermodynamic limit to explore the low-energy excitations of isotropic bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chains. Haldane mapped the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a continuum field theory, the nonlinear sigma model ($\mathrm{NL}\ensuremath{\sigma}\mathrm{M}$). We find that the $\mathrm{NL}\ensuremath{\sigma}\mathrm{M}$ fails to capture the influence of the biquadratic term and provides only an unsatisfactory description of the Haldane phase physics. But several features in the Haldane phase can be explained by noninteracting multimagnon states. The physics at the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland point is characterized by multisoliton continua. Moving into the extended critical phase, we find that these excitation continua contract, which we explain using a field-theoretic description. New excitations emerge at higher energies and, in the vicinity of the purely biquadratic point, they show simple cosine dispersions. Using block fidelities, we identify them as elementary one-particle excitations and relate them to the integrable Temperley-Lieb chain.

Dynamics of quantum spin systems in dimer and valence-bond-solid ground states stabilized by competing interactions

Yongmin Yu, Gerhard H. Muller

For special coupling ratios, the one-dimensional (1D) s=1/2 Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions has a pure dimer ground state, and the 1D s=1 Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic bilinear and biquadratic interactions has an exact valence-bond-solid ground state. The recursion method is used to calculate the T=0 spin dynamic structure factor for both models and, for the s=1/2 model, also the dimer dynamic structure factor. New results for line shapes and dynamically relevant dispersions are obtained.

Bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 model in the Haldane and dimerized phases

Mykhailo V. Rakov, Michael Weyrauch

We study the low-lying spectrum of the bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the dimerized and Haldane phases using a tensor renormalization method. At the critical point $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}/4$, the finite-size spectrum predicted by the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model can only partly be confirmed. We find a singlet-singlet gap which does not fit into the WZW systematics. The results obtained are compared to Bethe ansatz, exact diagonalization, and density-matrix renormalization group calculations for specific parameters.

Dimer and trimer fluctuations in the s=12 transverse XX chain

Oleg Derzhko, Taras Krokhmalskii, Joachim Stolze +1 more

Exact results for the dynamic dimer and trimer structure factors of the one-dimensional $s=\frac{1}{2}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}XX$ model in a transverse magnetic field $(\ensuremath{\Vert}z)$ are presented and discussed in relation to known exact results for the dynamic spin structure factors. In the framework of the Jordan-Wigner representation, the accessible spectrum of the dimer fluctuation operator is limited to two-fermion excitations, whereas that of the trimer fluctuation operator involves two- and four-fermion excitations. The spectral boundaries, soft modes, and singularity structure of the four-fermion excitation continuum as probed by the dynamic trimer structure factor are examined and compared to corresponding properties of the two-fermion excitation continuum, as probed by the dynamic dimer and transverse spin structure factors.

The S = 1 quantum spin chain: some exact and numerical results

D Paczek, John B. Parkinson

Abstract There has been great interest recently in quantum spin chains with S = 1. Much of this work was stimulated by Haldane’s (1983a, b) discussion of the isotropic Heisenberg model for which he predicted the existence of a disordered ground state (i.e. one in which the correlations decay exponentially) and a gap to the first excited state at k = n. We consider a system with isotropic Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange, and a magnetic field, described by the Hamiltonian.
