Abstract

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we calculate the energy of a domain wall in the 2D $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model as a function of the linear hole density ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$, as well as the interaction energy between walls, for $J/t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.35$. Based on these results, we conclude that the ground state always has domain walls for dopings $0<x\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.3$. For $x\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.125$, the system has (1, 0) domain walls with ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.5$, while for $0.125\ensuremath{\lesssim}x\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$ the system has a possibly phase-separated mixture of walls with ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.5$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$. For $x\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.17$, there are only walls with ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Striped Phase in the 2D t − J Model

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the 2D $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model at a hole doping of $x\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\frac{1}{8}$ on clusters as large as $19\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8$. We find a striped phase consistent with recent neutron scattering experiments. We find that bond-centered and site-centered stripes have nearly the same energy, suggesting that in the absence of pinning effects the domain walls can fluctuate.

Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we study the 2D t-J model at a hole doping of x=1/8 on clusters as large as 19x8. We find a striped phase which is consistent with recent neutron scattering experiments. We find that bond-centered and site-centered stripes have nearly the same energy, suggesting that in the absence of pinning effects the domain walls can fluctuate.

Charged domain walls in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

J. Yang, W. P. Su

In this paper we numerically study the single-band Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice using a mean-field iteration approach. We calculate the energies and configurations of finite-size systems for various doping densities up to 20%. The results show that there exists an attractive interaction among the holes, which forces the holes to form domain walls. The most stable configuration of domain-wall structure is determined, and its stability against transverse spin fluctuations is studied. When the nearest-neighbor repulsion V is considered, the system becomes richer in phases. The binding energy is reduced and vanishes completely at ${\mathit{V}}_{\mathit{c}}$=0.17t (for U/t=5, with t and U being the hopping integral and the on-site Hubbard repulsion, respectively). For small value (but larger than ${\mathit{V}}_{\mathit{c}}$) of V, we find that the holes form well-defined spin bags, which are separated from each other for a very small doping density. For a doping density larger than a critical value, they form domain walls. The physical implications of these results and their relation to experiment are discussed.

d_{x^2-y^2} Pair Domain Walls

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we study domain wall structures in the t-J model at a hole doping of x=1/8. We find that the domain walls are composed of d_{x^2-y^2} pairs and that the regions between the domain walls have antiferromagnetic correlations that are pi phase shifted across a domain wall. At x=1/8, the hole filling corresponds to one hole per two domain wall unit cells. When the pairs in a domain wall are pinned by an external field, the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing response is suppressed, but when the pinning is weakened, d_{x^2-y^2} pair-field correlations can develop.

Phase separation and stripe formation in the two-dimensional t−J model: A comparison of numerical results

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino

We make a critical analysis of numerical results for and against phase separation and stripe formation in the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. We argue that the frustrated phase separation mechanism for stripe formation requires phase separation at too high a doping for it to be consistent with existing numerical studies of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. We compare variational energies for various methods, and conclude that the most accurate calculations for large systems appear to be from the density-matrix renormalization group. These calculations imply that the ground state of the doped $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model is striped, not phase separated.

Dynamical domain walls and spin-Peierls order in doped antiferromagnets: Evidence from exact diagonalization of small clusters

R. Eder, Y. Ohta

The hole-doped two-dimensional(2D) $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model is studied by exact diagonalization on a $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ cluster which, unlike the standard tilted-square clusters, can in principle accomodate an antiphase domain wall. For hole concentration $10%$ and $J/t>~0.5$ the ground-state energy/site is lower than the conventional tilted-square $\sqrt{20}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{20}$ cluster. In the ground state two holes form a loosely bound pair pinned to an antiphase domain wall. The dynamical density correlation function shows sharp quasiparticlelike peaks, reminiscent of the ``holons'' in 1D chains, which suggest the existence of solitonlike propagating domain walls. The dynamical correlation function of the bond-singlet operator has a low-energy peak structure characteristic of columnar spin-Peierls order, the dynamical spin-correlation function shows an intense and isolated ``resonance peak'' near $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}).$
