Abstract

The spin gap of a one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model is numerically calculated with the density-matrix renormalization group, with a special emphasis on the effect of a next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${(t}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ and the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange $(J)$ interaction. At half filling, a significant spin gap opens if $|{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}|\ensuremath{\simeq}|t|$ and $J=0$, in agreement with the weak-coupling theory, while the gap is strongly suppressed by the introduction of $J$. On the other hand, the quarter-filled system has very small spin gaps regardless of the values of ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and $J$. Implications for the ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ chain in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{14}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{24}{\mathrm{O}}_{41}$ and related materials are discussed.

Charge Gap of the Quasi-One-Dimensional Organic Conductors: A Density-Matrix Renormalization-Group Study

Satoshi Nishimoto, Masahiro O. Takahashi, Y. Ohta

The Density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) technique is used to study the one-dimensional (1D) dimerized Hubbard model at quarter filling. We carry out a precise calculation of the charge gap as a function of the interaction and dimerization strengths and evaluate the interaction strength of the effective 1D Hubbard model at half filling. We also examine the effect of nearest-neighbor repulsion on the charge gap, whereby we evaluate the realistic repulsive strengths for quasi-1D organic compounds.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

Satoshi Nishimoto, Kazuhiro Sano, Y. Ohta

We study the one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping integrals by using the density-matrix renormalization group method and Hartree-Fock approximation. Based on the calculated results for the spin gap, total-spin quantum number, and Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter, we determine the ground-state phase diagram of the model in the entire filling and wide parameter region. We show that, in contrast to the weak-coupling regime where a spin-gapped liquid phase is predicted in the region with four Fermi points, the spin gap vanishes in a substantial region in the strong-coupling regime. It is remarkable that a large variety of phases, such as the paramagnetic metallic phase, spin-gapped liquid phase, singlet and triplet superconducting phases, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phase, appear in such a simple model in the strong-coupling regime.

Metallic Ferromagnetism in a One-Dimensional Hubbard Model; Study Using the Density-Matrix Renormalization-Group Method

Harumi Sakamoto, Kenn Kubo

We examined a one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping with up to 32 sites by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The model has two energy bands and includes the flat-band model studied by Tasaki as a special case. The model with finite band dispersion is found to show metallic (saturated) ferromagnetism for a sufficiently strong interaction. No partially polarized ground state is found. The interaction necessary to realize a ferromagnetic ground state becomes weak when the electron density is decreased from the quarter-filling.

Application of the density matrix renormalization group in momentum space

Satoshi Nishimoto, Eric Jeckelmann, Florian Gebhard +1 more

We investigate the application of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to the Hubbard model in momentum space. We treat the one-dimensional models with dispersion relations corresponding to nearest-neighbor hopping and $1/r$ hopping and the two-dimensional model with isotropic nearest-neighbor hopping. By comparing with the exact solutions for both one-dimensional models and with exact diagonalization in two dimensions, we first investigate the convergence of the ground-state energy. We find variational convergence of the energy with the number of states kept for all models and parameter sets. In contrast to the real-space algorithm, the accuracy becomes rapidly worse with increasing interaction and is not significantly better at half filling. We compare the results for different dispersion relations at fixed interaction strength over bandwidth and find that extending the range of the hopping in one dimension has little effect, but that changing the dimensionality from one to two leads to lower accuracy at weak-to-moderate interaction strength. In the one-dimensional models at half filling, we also investigate the behavior of the single-particle gap, the dispersion of spinon excitations, and the momentum distribution function. For the single-particle gap, we find that proper extrapolation in the number of states kept is important. For the spinon dispersion, we find that good agreement with the exact forms can be achieved at weak coupling if the large momentum-dependent finite-size effects are taken into account for nearest-neighbor hopping. For the momentum distribution, we compare with various weak-coupling and strong-coupling approximations and discuss the importance of finite-size effects as well as the accuracy of the DMRG.

Phase diagram of the half-filled Hubbard chain with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

S. Daul, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping using the density-matrix renormalization-group technique as well as an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. We find commensurate and incommensurate disordered magnetic insulating phases and a spin-gapped metallic phase in addition to the one-dimensional Heisenberg phase. At large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, we make contact with the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg chain, which has spin-gapped phases for sufficiently large frustration. For weak U, sufficiently large next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}_{2}$ leads to a band structure with four Fermi points rather than two, producing a spin-gapped metallic phase. As U is increased in this regime, the system undergoes a Mott-Hubbard transition to a frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator.

Charge and spin excitation spectra in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

Satoshi Nishimoto, Tomonori Shirakawa, Y. Ohta

We calculate spin and charge excitation spectra of the one-dimensional (1D) quarter-filled Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor $t$ and next-nearest-neighbor ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ hopping integrals using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group technique. We consider a case where $t$ $(>0)$ is much smaller than ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ $(>0)$. First, we examine the accuracy of our method based on comparison between our result and exact noninteracting spectrum. Next, we investigate the spectra with the on-site Coulomb interaction. We find that the spin and charge excitation spectra are essentially the same as those of the 1D quarter-filled Hubbard (and $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$) model for the two 1D chains along the hopping integral ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. However, the hopping integral $t$ $(<{t}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ plays a crucial role in the short-range correlations and low-energy excitaions; ferromagnetic correlation between electrons on neighboring sites is enhanced and pairing correlation between the electrons is induced. Consequently, a spin-triplet superconducting state may be derived.
