Spatial structure of spin polarons in the t−J model

Abstract

The deformation of the quantum N\'eel state induced by a spin polaron is analyzed in a slave fermion approach. Our method is based on the self-consistent Born approximation for the Green's function and wave function for the quasiparticle. The results of various spin-correlation functions relative to the position of the moving hole are discussed and shown to agree with those available from small cluster calculations. Antiferromagnetic correlations in the direct neighborhood of the hole are reduced, but they remain antiferromagnetic even for $J$ as small as $0.1t$. These correlation functions exhibit dipolar distortions in the spin structure, which sensitively depend on the momentum of the quasiparticle. Their asymptotic decay with the distance from the hole is governed by power laws, yet the spectral weight of the quasiparticles does not vanish.

Spin polarons in thet-Jmodel: Shape and backflow

A. Ramšak, Peter Horsch

The self-consistent Born approximation for the self-energy and the wave function of a single hole moving in a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet is used to calculate various spin-correlation functions that characterize the perturbation induced by the hole. The results for these correlation functions agree with the available small-cluster calculations. The hole-spin correlation functions decay asymptotically with the distance from the hole as a power law and exhibit a dipolar distortion of the antiferromagnet. The quasiparticle spectral weight remains finite.

Spin polarons in the t - J model

Gerardo Martı́nez, Peter Horsch

The motion of a single hole in a two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet (hAF) is studied in a representation where holes are described as spinless fermions (holons) and spins as normal bosons. Assuming long-range AF order the spin dynamics is treated in linear spin-wave theory. The formulation highlights the close relation with the conventional polaron problem. The holon Green's function is calculated self-consistently within the Born approximation using finite-cluster geometries for the numerical solution. As a remarkable result we find close agreement with the spectral function A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}) of a hole calculated by exact diagonalization methods. A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}) is characterized by a narrow quasiparticle (QP) peak at the low-energy side of the spectrum, which is well separated from the incoherent part for large enough J values. A complete characterization of our solution is given, including the spectral weight, the dispersion relation, and effective masses of the QP state. A finite-size-scaling study gives a nonvanishing spectral weight of the QP in the thermodynamic limit for values J/t typical for copper oxide superconductors. Our calculations indicate that the self-consistent Born approximation is a valuable scheme for characterizing the dynamics of a hole in the t-J model, even in the strong-coupling regime.

Spatial structure of magnetic polarons in strongly interacting antiferromagnets

K. Knakkergaard Nielsen, M. A. Bastarrachea-Magnani, Thomas Pohl +1 more

The properties of mobile impurities in quantum magnets are fundamental for our understanding of strongly correlated materials and may play a key role in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity. Hereby, the motion of hole-like defects through an antiferromagnet has been of particular importance. It creates magnetic frustrations that lead to the formation of a quasiparticle, whose complex structure continues to pose substantial challenges to theory and numerical simulations. In this article, we develop a nonperturbative theoretical approach to describe the microscopic properties of such magnetic polarons. Based on the self-consistent Born approximation, which is provenly accurate in the strong-coupling regime, we obtain a complete description of the polaron wave function by solving a set of Dyson-like equations that permit to compute relevant spin-hole correlation functions. We apply this new method to analyze the spatial structure of magnetic polarons in the strongly interacting regime and find qualitative differences from predictions of previously applied truncation schemes. Our calculations reveal a remarkably high spatial symmetry of the polaronic magnetization cloud and a surprising misalignment between its orientation and the polaron crystal momentum. The developed framework opens up an approach to the microscopic properties of doped quantum magnets and will enable detailed analyses of ongoing experiments based on cold-atom quantum simulations of the Fermi-Hubbard model.

Hole motion in an arbitrary spin background: Beyond the minimal spin-polaron approximation

Matthias Vojta C, K. W. Becker

The motion of a single hole in an arbitrary magnetic background is investigated for the two-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. The wave function of the hole is described within a generalized string picture which leads to a modified concept of spin polarons. We calculate the one-hole spectral function using a large-string basis for the limits of a N\'eel ordered and a completely disordered background. In addition we use a simple approximation to interpolate between these cases. For the antiferromagnetic background we reproduce the well-known quasiparticle band. In the disordered case the shape of the spectral function is found to be strongly momentum dependent, the quasiparticle weight vanishes for all hole momenta. Finally, we discuss the relevance of results for the lowest energy eigenvalue and its dispersion obtained from calculations using a polaron of minimal size as found in the literature.

Spin polarons in the t-J model in an unconstrained representation

A. V. Dotsenko

The report discusses the slave-fermion representations of the t-J model and describes another representation, in which fermions and bosons are completely commuting and in which the properties of fermions are directly related to the properties of physical holes. For a study of the system in the new representation at half-filling, interaction of fermions with two magnons is treated in mean-field theory. The obtained effective model, in comparison to that of the usual slave-fermion representation, has an additional bare hole dispersion due to the hole moving by using quantum spin fluctuations present in the undoped antiferromagnetic ground state. The single-hole Green's function at half-filling is then found numerically using the self-consistent Born approximation. For all studied quantities good or excellent agreement with numerical data is observed in the entire parameter range, noticeably better than in the studies with the slave-fermion representation. Using the same effective model, the two-hole problem is also studied by solving numerically the Bethe-Salpeter equation with noncrossing diagrams.
