Anomalous Fluctuations of the Condensate in Interacting Bose Gases

Abstract

We find that the fluctuations of the condensate in a weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box of volume $V$ follow the law $〈\ensuremath{\delta}{N}_{0}^{2}〉\ensuremath{\sim}{V}^{4/3}$. This anomalous behavior arises from the occurrence of infrared divergencies due to phonon excitations and holds also for strongly correlated Bose superfluids. The analysis is extended to an interacting Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap where the fluctuations are found to exhibit a similar anomaly.

Fluctuations of the condensate in ideal and interacting Bose gases

We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within a canonical ensemble. A canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behaviour of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behaviour for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.

Anomalous condensate fluctuations in strongly interacting superfluids

F. Meier, W. Zwerger

We show that the condensate occupation of a superfluid Bose liquid quite generally exhibits anomalously large fluctuations at finite temperatures $T\ensuremath{\ne}0.$ In three dimensions, the variance $〈\ensuremath{\delta}{N}_{0}^{2}〉$ of the number ${N}_{0}$ of particles in the condensate scales nonlinearly with volume V like ${T}^{2}{V}^{4/3}$ at low T, generalizing the result obtained by Giorgini, Pitaevskii, and Stringari for a weakly interacting Bose gas. In two dimensions there is only a quasicondensate whose fluctuations are of the same order as the mean value.

Anomalous particle-number fluctuations in a three-dimensional interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

Shujuan Liu, Hongwei Xiong, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

The particle-number fluctuations originated from collective excitations are investigated for a three-dimensional, repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a harmonic trap. The contribution due to the quantum depletion of the condensate is calculated and the explicit expression of the coefficient in the formulas denoting the particle-number fluctuations is given. The results show that the particle-number fluctuations of the condensate follow the law $〈\ensuremath{\delta}{N}_{0}^{2}〉\ensuremath{\sim}{N}^{22/15}$ and the fluctuations vanish when temperature approaches the BEC critical temperature.

Thermodynamic identities and particle number fluctuations in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

Fabrizio Illuminati, Patrick Navez, Martin Wilkens

We derive exact thermodynamic identities relating the average number of condensed atoms and the root-mean-square fluctuations determined in different statistical ensembles for the weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box. This is achieved by introducing the concept of auxiliary partition functions for model Hamiltonians that do conserve the total number of particles. Exploiting such thermodynamic identities, we provide the first, completely analytical prediction of the microcanonical particle number fluctuations in the weakly interacting Bose gas. Such fluctuations, as a function of the volume V of the box are found to behave normally, in contrast with the anomalous scaling behaviour V 4/3 of the fluctuations in the ideal Bose gas.

Microcanonical fluctuations of the condensate in weakly interacting Bose gases

Zbigniew Idziaszek

We study fluctuations of the number of Bose condensed atoms in a weakly interacting homogeneous and trapped gases. For a homogeneous system we apply the particle-number-conserving formulation of the Bogoliubov theory and calculate the condensate fluctuations within the canonical and the microcanonical ensembles. We demonstrate that, at least in the low-temperature regime, predictions of the particle-number-conserving and traditional, nonconserving theory are identical, and lead to the anomalous scaling of fluctuations. Furthermore, the microcanonical fluctuations differ from the canonical ones by a quantity which scales normally in the number of particles, thus predictions of both ensembles are equivalent in the thermodynamic limit. We observe a similar behavior for a weakly interacting gas in a harmonic trap. This is in contrast to the trapped, ideal gas, where microcanonical and canonical fluctuations are different in the thermodynamic limit.

Roles of Collective Excitations in the Anomalous Fluctuations of One-Dimensional Interacting Bose-Condensed Gases

刘淑娟, xiong wei, 徐志君 +1 more

The particle-number fluctuations due to collective excitations are calculated for a one-dimensional interacting Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic potential. By using the Thomas-Fermi approximation, the behaviour of the anomalous fluctuations is found to be (δ^2N0)~ N^10/3/ (ln N)^2 with N being the total number of particles.

We find that the fluctuations of the condensate in a weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box of volume VVV follow the law 〈\ensuremathδN02〉\ensuremath∼V4/3〈\ensuremath{\delta}{N}_{0}^{2}〉\ensuremath{\sim}{V}^{4/3}〈\ensuremathδN02〉\ensuremath∼V4/3.
