Scaling and criticality of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid

Abstract

A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong electron-electron interactions, ${g}_{c}<\frac{1}{2}$, and anomalous power laws for $\frac{1}{2}<{g}_{c}<1$, where ${g}_{c}$ is the correlation parameter of the Luttinger liquid. These findings resolve a recent controversy. If elastic potential scattering is present, we find a logarithmically divergent impurity susceptibility at ${g}_{c}<\frac{1}{2}$ that can be rationalized in terms of the two-channel Kondo model.

Kondo Effect in a Luttinger Liquid: Exact Results from Conformal Field Theory

Per Fröjdh, Henrik Johannesson

We report on exact results for the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional interacting electron system. By using boundary conformal field theory, we show that there are only two types of critical behaviors consistent with the symmetries of the problem: either a local Fermi liquid or a theory with an anomalous response identical to that recently proposed by Furusaki and Nagaosa. Suppression of backscattering off the impurity leads to the same critical properties as for the two-channel Kondo effect.

Low Temperature Behavior of the Kondo Effect in Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid

Yu-Liang Liu

Using the bosonization method, we study the low temperature behavior of the Kondo effect in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and clearly show that the power law temperature dependence of the impurity susceptibility is completely determined by the repulsive electron-electron interaction existing in the total spin channel and is independent of the electron-electron interaction existing in the charge channels.

Magnetic impurity in a Luttinger liquid: A conformal field theory approach

Per Fröjdh, Henrik Johannesson

We study the low-temperature properties of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional interacting electron system. Using a formalism by Affleck and Ludwig, with a scale invariant boundary condition replacing the impurity, we exploit boundary conformal field theory to deduce the impurity thermal and magnetic response. In the case of only forward electron scattering off the impurity, we predict the same critical scaling as for the two-channel Kondo effect for noninteracting electrons, but with a different Wilson ratio. Backward electron scattering off the impurity destabilizes this behavior and drives the system to a new fixed point. In the case of equal amplitudes for forward and backward scattering (Kondo interaction), we show that there are only two types of scaling behaviors consistent with the symmetries of the problem: either a local Fermi liquid or a critical theory with an anomalous specific heat. The latter case agrees with a recent poor-man's scaling result proposed by Furusaki and Nagaosa. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Underscreened Kondo impurities in a Luttinger liquid

P. Durganandini, Pascal Simon

We study the problem of underscreened Kondo physics in an interacting electronic system modeled by a Luttiger liquid (LL). We find that the leading temperature dependence of thermodynamical quantities such as the specific heat, spin susceptibility are Fermi liquidlike in nature. However, anomalous power law exponents are seen in the subleading terms. We also discuss possible realizations through single and double quantum dot configurations coupled to LL leads and its consequences for electronic transport. The leading low temperature transport behavior is seen to exhibit in general, non-Fermi liquid LL behavior unlike the thermodynamical quantities.

Multichannel Kondo effect in an interacting electron system: Exact results for the low-temperature thermodynamics

Mats Granath, Henrik Johannesson

We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-$S$ magnetic impurity coupled to $m>~2$ degenerate bands of interacting electrons in one dimension. By exploiting boundary-conformal-field-theory techniques, we derive exact results for the possible impurity thermal and magnetic response. The leading behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility is shown to be insensitive to the electron-electron interaction. In contrast, there are two types of scaling behavior of the impurity specific heat consistent with the symmetries of the problem: Either it remains the same as for the ordinary multichannel Kondo problem for noninteracting electrons or it acquires a new leading term governed by a critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{m}{=(g}_{m}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{-}1)/m,$ where ${g}_{m}<~1$ is a generalized ($m$ channel) Luttinger-liquid charge parameter measuring the strength of the repulsive electron-electron interaction. We conjecture that the latter behavior is indeed realized when the impurity is exactly screened $(m=2S).$

Charge Kondo circuit as a detector for electron-electron interactions in a Luttinger liquid

T. K. T. Nguyen, Anton V. Parafilo, H. Q. Nguyen +1 more

We investigate the effects of the electron-electron interactions on the quantum transport through a charge Kondo circuit. The setup consists of a quantum dot sandwiched between two leads by two nearly transparent single mode quantum point contacts. The size of the interacting area $L$ in the Luttinger liquid formed in the vicinities of the narrow constrictions is assumed to be much smaller compared to the size of the quantum dot $a$. We predict that the interplay between the electron-electron interactions in the Luttinger liquid and the fingerprints of the non-Fermi liquid behavior in the vicinity of the two channel Kondo intermediate coupling fixed point allows one to determine the interaction strength through the power-law temperature scaling of the electric conductance.
