Abstract

We propose an integrable Kondo problem in a one-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. With the open boundary condition of the wave functions at the impurity sites, the model can be exactly solved via Bethe ansatz for a set of ${J}_{L,R}$ (Kondo coupling constants) and ${V}_{L,R}$ (impurity potentials) parametrized by a single parameter $c$. The integrable value of ${J}_{L,R}$ runs from negative infinity to positive infinity, which allows us to study both the ferromagnetic Kondo problem and the antiferromagnetic Kondo problem in a strongly correlated electron system. Generally, there is a residual entropy for the ground state, which indicates a typical non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Boundary Kondo problem in the integrable t−J model

Jianhui Dai, Yupeng Wang

We study the problem of a boundary magnetic impurity coupled with the solvable $t\ensuremath{-}J$ chain. This model provides a good starting point to understand the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid as well as in a strongly correlated host. As the Kondo coupling constant ${J}_{i}$ may take arbitrary values without breaking the integrability, we can study the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo problems simultaneously. It is shown that the boundary coupling generally splits the impurity spin into two effective spins and induces the interaction-dependent residual entropy. The absence of Kondo screening in an antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling regime is found, which indicates a genuine competing effect between the Kondo coupling ${J}_{i}$ and the impurity potential ${V}_{i}.$ A local Landau-Luttinger liquid description is proposed to calculate the specific heat of the impurity.

Exactly solvable Kondo problem in the open $t-J$ chains

Jianhui Dai, Yupeng Wang

We study the problem of a boundary magnetic impurity coupled with the solvable $t-J$ chains. Our model provides a good start point to understand the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid as well as in a strongly correlated host. The Kondo coupling constant $J$ can take arbitrary values, which allows us to study the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo problems simultaneously. It is shown that both the Kondo coupling and the scalar potential effectively reconcile the spin dynamics at low temperatures. Generally, the impurity spin is split into two ghost spins via coupling effect. The residual entropy, which can be exactly derived for the present model, is strongly interaction-dependent. This hints the local spin configuration is very complicated and very different from that in the conventional Kondo problem. An unscreening phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic regime is found, which reveals the impurity potential plays an important role for the Kondo problem in a strongly correlated host. The low temperature specific heat is calculated in the framework of local Landau-Luttinger liquid theory.

BOUNDARY POTENTIAL EFFECT FOR THE KONDO PROBLEM IN A LUTTINGER LIQUID: INTEGRABLE CASE

Yupeng Wang, Duo Jin, Fu‐Cho Pu

To study the impurity potential effect to the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid, we introduce a model of ferromagnetic single-impurity Kondo problem in a multi-band one-dimensional δ-potential Fermi gas, which is exactly solvable for a special Kondo coupling constant via Bethe ansatz. It is found that the boundary potential modifies the local moment seriously due to the charge-spin coupling and the strong backward scattering off the impurity, and thus strongly affects the fixed point of the system. Generally, their is a residual entropy for the ground state which depends on the strength of the boundary potential. In addition, the tunneling effect through the impurity and the breakdown of the open boundary induced by the impurity are also discussed.

Exact Solution of a Backward Scattering Kondo Model

Yupeng Wang, Fu-ke Pu

To specify the difference between the one-dimensional Kondo problem and the three-dimensional Kondo problem, we consider a model which describes the interaction between one-dimensional free electrons and a magnetic impurity. Bethe ansatz exact results and scaling analysis show that if J F > -| J B |, the Kondo screening occurs. There is no ferromagnetic Kondo screening in such a system but the long range antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling is relevant. As soon as the Coulomb interaction is introduced, the crossovers between the scaling trajectories in the parameter region J F < -| J B | and the trajectories in other parameter regions arise and ferromagnetic Kondo screening may occur.

An Exactly Solvable Kondo Problem for Interacting One-Dimensional Fermions

Yupeng Wang, Johannes Voit

The single impurity Kondo problem in the one-dimensional $\ensuremath{\delta}$-potential Fermi gas is exactly solved for two sets of special coupling constants via Bethe ansatz. It is found that ferromagnetic Kondo screening does occur in one case which confirms the Furusaki-Nagaosa conjecture while in the other case it does not, which we explain in a simple physical picture. Exact expressions for the surface energy, the low temperature specific heat and the Pauli susceptibility induced by the impurity, and the Kondo temperature are derived.

An integrable Anderson-impurity problem embedded in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Renjie Song, Mingchen Zheng, Junpeng Cao +1 more

An exactly solvable one-dimensional Hubbard model with a single Anderson impurity embedded at the boundary is constructed in the framework of the quantum inverse scattering method. The model is solved exactly by the nested Bethe ansatz method. We identify the boundary bound states and determine the ground state phase diagram. By analyzing the impurity contributions to the magnetization density and magnetic susceptibility, we demonstrate that a local moment is formed at the impurity site and is screened by the host electrons, consistent with Kondo physics.
