Thermodynamic Properties of 1d Heisenberg Model. Magnetic Moment of Spinon

Abstract

The one dimensional spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is considered using a simple quasiparticle picture - an interacting Fermi gas of kinks. Using this picture the low temperature heat capacity, and the magnetic susceptibility with logarithmic field and temperature corrections are derived. The results obtained are in agreement with previous computations and conformal field theory calculations. It is hypothesised that the magnetic moment of the kink $g_{kink}=\sqrt{2}g_{electron}$.

Magnetic moment of a spinon and thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model

Wayne M. McRae, Oleg P. Sushkov

The one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet is considered using a simple quasiparticle picture: a weakly interacting Fermi gas of kinks. Using this picture, the low-temperature heat capacity, and the magnetic susceptibility with logarithmic field and temperature corrections are derived. The results obtained are in agreement with previous Bethe ansatz and conformal field-theory calculations. We demonstrate from comparison with previous calculations that the magnetic moment of the kink ${g}_{\mathrm{kink}}=\sqrt{2}{g}_{\mathrm{electron}}.$

Finite-temperature order-disorder phase transition in a frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet in strong magnetic fields

Johannes Richter, Oleg Derzhko, Taras Krokhmalskii

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures in the vicinity of the saturation magnetic field. The low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin model are mapped onto a hard-square gas on a square lattice. We use exact diagonalization data for finite spin systems to check the validity of such a description. Using a classical Monte Carlo method we give a quantitative description of the thermodynamics of the spin model at low temperatures around the saturation field. The main peculiarity of the considered two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet is related to a phase transition of the hard-square model on the square lattice, which belongs to the two-dimensional Ising model universality class. It manifests itself in a logarithmic (low-) temperature singularity of the specific heat of the spin system observed for magnetic fields just below the saturation field.

Thermodynamics of the frustrated one-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg ferromagnet in a magnetic field

M. Härtel, Johannes Richter, Dieter Ihle

We calculate the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities (magnetization, correlation functions, transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths, spin susceptibility, and specific heat) of the frustrated one-dimensional spin-half ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$ Heisenberg ferromagnet, i.e., for ${J}_{2}<0.25|{J}_{1}|$, in an external magnetic field using a second-order Green-function formalism and full diagonalization of finite systems. We determine power-law relations for the field dependence of the position and the height of the maximum of the uniform susceptibility. Considering the specific heat at low magnetic fields, two maxima in its temperature dependence are found.

σ-model study of Haldane-gap antiferromagnets

Th. Jolicœur, O. Golinelli

We use a quantum O(N) nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma} model to describe one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets with integer spin S. A large-N analytical treatment of this effective theory leads to definite predictions for thermodynamic quantities in the low-temperature regime. We obtain the Haldane gap as a function of the temperature and note a trend similar to that found in the compound NENP. The specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are also obtained and comparison with exact numerical results for the S=1 spin chain allows us to determine the domain of validity of our approximation. By a calculation at subleading 1/N order we compute the quasiparticle lifetime. Results are given on-shell, for the width observed at the quasiparticle pole as seen in neutron-scattering experiments, and also off-shell, for the NMR relaxation rate ${\mathit{T}}_{1}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$. The phenomenological interacting boson model is compared with our approach. We discuss the effects of anisotropy and compare our results with present experiments on NENP.

Green’s function study of one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnets

W. J. Zhang, J. L. Shen, Jian Xu +1 more

The one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnets are studied by the Green's function method at finite temperatures. The Green's function is decoupled in terms of the correlation functions of 〈${\mathit{S}}_{0}^{\mathit{z}}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{n}}^{\mathit{z}}$〉 and 〈${\mathit{S}}_{0}^{+}$${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{n}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$〉 under the constraint of 〈${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{z}}$〉=0, from which a set of self-consistent equations are derived and solved numerically. The thermodynamic properties such as internal energy, specific heat, and zero-field parallel susceptibility are calculated. Our results predict the correct behavior for the correlation functions and thermodynamic quantities in the entire temperature region, in agreement both with the exact numerical results on the finite chain and the experimental data.

Thermodynamic properties of the Haldane spin chain: a statistical model for the elementary excitations

L. P. Régnault, Igor A. Zaliznyak, S. V. Meshkov

The low-temperature behaviour of the thermodynamic quantities in the one-dimensional 1D antiferromagnet with a Haldane ground state was analysed using a concept of non-interacting quasiparticles as a starting point. The proposed description appeared to be in good agreement with the results of the Monte Carlo study of a 128-site spin chain and experimental data obtained in NENP (Ni(C 2 H 8 N 2 ) 2 NO 2 ClO 4 ) provided that the elementary excitations constituting the Haldane triplet obey Fermi statistics.
