Comment on “Nonzero Fermi Level Density of States for a Disordered d -Wave Superconductor in Two Dimensions”

Abstract

In their paper Ziegler et al. claim that the model of 2D Dirac fermions in a random gauge potential has a finite density of states at zero energy. We point out that the approach used in this paper fails to reproduce the perturbation theory results for this problem.

K. Ziegler, Matthias H. Hettler, P. J. Hirschfeld

In a recent Comment (cond-mat/9701197) on our Letter (PRL 77, 3013 (1996), cond-mat/9604176) Nersesyan and Tsvelik questioned the relevance of our exact calculation of the density of states (DOS) of a 2D d-wave superconductor using a Lorentzian disorder distribution, claiming ``that models with Lorentzian and Gaussian disorder belong to different universality classes'', on grounds of a comparison with a straightforward perturbation expansion in the disorder potential. We showed in a very recent paper (cond-mat/9703047) that a rigorous nonzero lower bound for DOS can be established without relying on the tails of the disorder distribution, i.e. both the Gaussian and Lorentzian distributions belong to a large class of distributions which give a nonzero lower bound for the DOS. This proves that the result of our Letter is generic.

Lower bound for the Fermi-level density of states of a disordered d -wave superconductor in two dimensions

K. Ziegler, Matthias H. Hettler, P. J. Hirschfeld

We consider a disordered $d$-wave superconductor in two dimensions. Recently, we have shown in an exact calculation that for a lattice model with a Lorentzian distributed random chemical potential the quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi level is nonzero. As the exact result holds only for the special choice of the Lorentzian, we employ different methods to show that for a large class of distributions, including the Gaussian distribution, one can establish a nonzero lower bound for the Fermi-level density of states. The fact that the tails of the distributions are unimportant in deriving the lower bound shows that the exact result obtained before is generic.

On the low-energy density of states in disordered d-wave superconductor

Guo-Zhu Liu

We study the low-energy density of states of Dirac fermions in disordered d-wave superconductor. At zero energy, a finite density of states is obtained via the mechanism of dynamical mass generation in an effective (1+1)-dimensional relativistic field theory.

Exact Density of States in a System of Disordered Two Dimensional Dirac Fermions in the Unitarity Limit: The d-wave Superconductor

C. Pépin, Patrick A. Lee

In this paper we present a method to compute the exact density of states induced by $N$ non magnetic impurities in a system of two dimensional Dirac fermions in the unitarity limit. We review the case of the $π$-flux phase of the Heisenberg model and also treat the disordered d-wave superconductor. In both case we find additional states in the gap with $δρ(ω) \simeq n_i/ |ω(\ln^2 |ω/Δ_0| + (π/2)^2)|$.

Interaction effects on two-dimensional fermions with random hopping

Matthew S. Foster, Andreas W. W. Ludwig

We study the effects of generic short-ranged interactions on a system of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions subject to a special kind of static disorder, often referred to as ``chiral.'' The noninteracting system is a member of the disorder class $BD\mathrm{I}$ [M. R. Zirnbauer, J. Math. Phys. 37, 4986 (1996)]. It emerges, for example, as a low-energy description of a time-reversal invariant tight-binding model of spinless fermions on a honeycomb lattice, subject to random hopping, and possessing particle-hole symmetry. It is known that, in the absence of interactions, this disordered system is special in that it does not localize in 2D, but possesses extended states and a finite conductivity at zero energy, as well as a strongly divergent low-energy density of states. In the context of the hopping model, the short-range interactions that we consider are particle-hole symmetric density-density interactions. Using a perturbative one-loop renormalization group analysis, we show that the same mechanism responsible for the divergence of the density of states in the noninteracting system leads to an instability, in which the interactions are driven strongly relevant by the disorder. This result should be contrasted with the limit of clean Dirac fermions in 2D, which is stable against the inclusion of weak short-ranged interactions. Our work suggests a mechanism wherein a clean system, initially insensitive to interaction effects, can be made unstable to interactions upon the inclusion of weak static disorder. We dub this mechanism a ``disorder-driven Mott transition.'' Our result for 2D fermions also contrasts sharply with known results in one dimension, where a similar delocalized phase has been shown to be robust against the inclusion of weak interaction effects.

Disorder effects in two-dimensionald-wave superconductors

A. A. Nersesyan, Alexei M. Tsvelik, F. Wenger

We show that weak nonmagnetic impurities in a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor introduce a nontrivial exponent in the energy dependence of the single-particle density of states: \ensuremath{\rho}(\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\omega}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$. The exponent \ensuremath{\alpha}>0 is exactly calculated for two types of disorder. We argue that the appearance of a finite \ensuremath{\rho}(0) would be equivalent to breaking of a continuous symmetry, prohibited in two dimensions. The method we use is based on the Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization of the effective model of 1D interacting fermions.
