Exciting, cooling, and vortex trapping in a Bose-condensed gas

A straightforward numerical technique, based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is used to generate a self-consistent description of thermally excited states of a dilute boson gas. The process of evaporative cooling is then modeled by following the time evolution of the system using the same equation. It is shown that the subsequent rethermalization of the thermally excited state produces a cooler coherent condensate. Other results presented show that trapping vortex states with the ground state may be possible in a two-dimensional experimental environment.

Phenomenological damping in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Seok Jin Choi, S. A. Morgan, Keith R. Burnett

The method of phenomenological damping developed by Pitaevskii (Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 35, 408 (1958) [Sov. Phys. JETP 35, 282 (1959)]) for superfluidity near the $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ point is simulated numerically for the case of a dilute, alkali, inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gas near absolute zero. We study several features of this method in describing the damping of excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In addition, we show that the method may be employed to obtain numerically accurate ground states for a variety of trap potentials.
