Twisted boundary conditions of quantum spin chains near the Gaussian fixed points

Abstract

We consider the Gaussian transition of one-dimensional quantum spin systems. Although the Gaussian transition is the second-order phase transition, the usual finite-size scaling technique does not work well in some cases. Using the conformal field theory, we present a new method which overcomes this difficulty.

2002 Spectrum of a duality–twisted Ising quantum chain

Uwe Grimm

Abstract. The Ising quantum chain with a peculiar twisted boundary condition is considered. This boundary condition, first introduced in the framework of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg quantum chain, is related to the duality transformation, which becomes a symmetry of the model at the critical point. Thus, at the critical point, the Ising quantum chain with the duality-twisted boundary is translationally invariant, similar as in the case of the usual periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete energy spectrum of the Ising quantum chain is calculated analytically for finite systems, and the conformal properties of the scaling limit are investigated. This provides an explicit example of a conformal twisted boundary condition and a corresponding generalised twisted partition function. Finite-size scaling at quantum transitions

Massimo Campostrini B, Andrea Pelissetto C, Ettore Vicari

We develop the finite-size scaling (FSS) theory at quantum transitions. We consider various boundary conditions, such as open and periodic boundary conditions, and characterize the corrections to the leading FSS behavior. Using renormalization-group (RG) theory, we generalize the classical scaling ansatz to describe FSS in the quantum case, classifying the different sources of scaling corrections. We identify nonanalytic corrections due to irrelevant (bulk and boundary) RG perturbations and analytic contributions due to regular backgrounds and analytic expansions of the nonlinear scaling fields. To check the general predictions, we consider the quantum $XY$ chain in a transverse field. For this model exact or numerically accurate results can be obtained by exploiting its fermionic quadratic representation. We study the FSS of several observables, such as the free energy, the energy differences between low-energy levels, correlation functions of the order parameter, etc., confirming the general predictions in all cases. Moreover, we consider bipartite entanglement entropies, which are characterized by the presence of additional scaling corrections, as predicted by conformal field theory.

Toroidal boundary conditions in n-state quantum chains

P. Chaselon

The author considers one-dimensional n-state quantum chains having as symmetry an Abelian group A of order n (generalised Ising chain). These Hamiltonians depend on 2(n-1) coupling constants. For special values of the coupling constants the symmetry of the quantum chains is larger than A corresponding to a (in general non-Abelian) group G with m elements (m)n). For each element of G he finds explicitly a boundary condition which leaves the Hamiltonian translationally invariant. This problem is relevant in finite-size scaling studies at the critical point of a second-order phase transition.

Quantum Superspin Systems from Conformal Field Theory

Jochen Christian Peschutter

Phase transitions of second order play an important role in solid state physics. It is in their nature that they occur only in systems that are composed from an infinite number of components since, only that way, the necessary conditions for this (for example, scale invariance) are granted. Such a system at a second order phase transition is called critical. The infinite number of particles poses a particular challenge, even for the description of classical systems. Quantum mechanical systems, however, are distinctly more difficult to treat in this context, since the dimension of their state space grows exponentially with the number of their particles, not to mention the fact that only a few – and usually only one-dimensional – quantum systems are exactly solvable. One of these exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum systems is the SU(N) Haldane-Shastry spin chain that may be regarded as the archetype of long-range spin chains. Moreover, it is critical in the continuum limit and its effective low-energy theory is the so-called SU(N)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model. It is a quantum field theory which is not only conformally invariant, so, in particular, scale invariant, but, furthermore, exhibits additional symmetry in the shape of an infinite extension of the Lie algebra su(N) associated with SU(N). Recent studies show that, from these very structures of the SU(N)_1 WZW model, one can, in turn, derive spin systems, whose arrangement is not necessarily the one of a spin chain, but even two-dimensional distributions of the spins in the plane are possible. These systems are again characterized by long-range interactions, comparable to those of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain, which is also obtained as a result of an appropriate choice of parameters. \n \nIn this thesis, we extend the construction already known for the SU(N) case to the supersymmetric case GL(m|n). Here, we construct explicitly both, a special quantum state as well as a Hamiltonian that projects this quantum state to zero. We also discuss the Hamiltonian in the special case of the GL(1|1) spin chain and compare it to the respective GL(1|1) Haldane-Shastry spin chain on a bipartite state space. Both are critical and we identify the corresponding conformal field theories. Subsequently, we describe a generalization of this system in terms of two parameters and explain how its spectrum was found. It is then analyzed and its continuum limit is determined. In doing so, it shows that the system displays criticality only for generic values of one of the two parameters.

Entanglement Spectrum, Critical Exponents, and Order Parameters in Quantum Spin Chains

Gabriele De Chiara, Luca Lepori, Maciej Lewenstein +1 more

We investigate the entanglement spectrum near criticality in finite quantum spin chains. Using finite size scaling we show that when approaching a quantum phase transition, the Schmidt gap, i.e., the difference between the two largest eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix λ(1), λ(2), signals the critical point and scales with universal critical exponents related to the relevant operators of the corresponding perturbed conformal field theory describing the critical point. Such scaling behavior allows us to identify explicitly the Schmidt gap as a local order parameter.
