A detailed and comprehensive study of the one-impurity multichannel Kondo model is presented. In the limit of a large number of conduction electron channels k>>1, the low-energy fixed point is accessible to a renormalization group improved perturbative expansion in 1/k. This straightforward approach enables us to examine the scaling, thermodynamics and dynamical response functions in great detail and make clear the following features: (i) the criticality of the fixed point, (ii) the universal non-integer degeneracy, and (iii) that the compensating spin cloud has a spatial extent of the order of one lattice spacing.
In this work we consider several exactly solvable models of magnetic impurities in critical quantum antiferromagnetic spin chains and multichannel Kondo impurities. Their ground-state properties are studied, and the finite set of nonlinear integral equations which exactly describe the thermodynamics of the models is constructed. We obtain several analytical low-energy expressions for the temperature, magnetic field, and frequency dependences of important characteristics of exactly solvable disordered quantum spin models and disordered multichannel Kondo impurities with essential many-body interactions. We show that the only low-energy parameter that gets renormalized is the velocity of the low-lying excitations (or the effective crossover scale connected with each impurity); the others appear to be universal. In our study several kinds of strong disorder important for experiments were used. Some of them produce low divergences in certain characteristics of our strongly disordered critical systems (compared with finite values for the homogeneous case or a single impurity). For weak disorder, or for narrow distributions of the local Kondo temperatures, our exact results reveal the presence of Kondo screening of disordered ensembles of magnetic impurities by low-lying excitations of the host. We point out that our results qualitatively coincide with the data of experiments on real disordered quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic systems and with the similar behavior of some heavy metallic alloys.
We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-
S magnetic impurity coupled to
m> 2 degenerate bands of interacting electrons in one dimension. By exploiting boundary-conformal-field-theory techniques, we derive exact results for the possible impurity thermal and magnetic response. The leading behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility is shown to be insensitive to the electron-electron interaction. In contrast, there are two types of scaling behavior of the impurity specific heat consistent with the symmetries of the problem: Either it remains the same as for the ordinary multichannel Kondo problem for noninteracting electrons or it acquires a new leading term governed by a critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{m}{=(g}_{m}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{-}1)/m,$ where
gm< 1 is a generalized (
m channel) Luttinger-liquid charge parameter measuring the strength of the repulsive electron-electron interaction. We conjecture that the latter behavior is indeed realized when the impurity is exactly screened
(m=2S).We construct an exactly solvable quantum impurity model which consists of spin-1/2 conduction fermions and a spin-1/2 magnetic moment. The ground state is a Gutzwiller projected Fermi sea with nonorthonormal modes and its wave function in the site-occupation basis is a Jastrow-type homogeneous polynomial. The parent Hamiltonian has all-to-all inverse-square hopping terms between the conduction fermions and inverse-square spin-exchange terms between the conduction fermions and the magnetic moment. The low-lying energy levels, spin-spin correlation function, and von Neumann entanglement entropy of our model demonstrate that it exhibits the essential aspects of spin-1/2 Kondo physics. The machinery developed in this work can generate many other exactly solvable quantum impurity models.
The two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect with its exotic ground state properties has remained difficult to realize in physical systems. At low energies, a quantum impurity with orbital degree of freedom, like a proton bound in an interstitial lattice space, comprises a 3-level system with a unique ground state and (at least) doubly degenerate rotational excitations with excitation energy
Delta0. When immersed in a metal, electronic angular momentum scattering induces transitions between any two of these levels (couplings
J), while the electron spin is conserved. We show by extensive numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations that without fine-tuning of parameters this system exhibits a 2CK fixed point, due to Kondo correlations in the excited-state doublet whose degeneracy is stabilized by the host lattice parity, while the channel symmetry (electron spin) is guaranteed by time reversal symmetry. We find a pronounced plateau in the entropy at
S(TK<T<Delta0)=kBln2 between the high-
T value,
S(TggDelta0)=kBln3, and the 2CK ground state value,
S(0)=kBlnsqrt2. This indicates a downward renormalization of the doublet below the non-interacting ground state, thus realizing the 2CK fixed point, in agreement with earlier conjectures. We mapped out the phase diagram of the model in the
J−Delta0 plane. The Kondo temperature
TK shows non-monotonic
J-dependence, characteristic for 2CK systems.newline indent Beside the two-channel Kondo effect of the model, we also study the single-channel version, which is realized by applying a strong magnetic field to the conduction band electrons so that their degeneracy is lifted and consequently having only one kind of electrons scattering off the impurity. This single-channel case is easier to analyze since the Hilbert space is not as large as that of the 2CK. We equally find a downward renormalization of the excited state energy by the Kondo correlations in the SU(2) doublet. In a wide range of parameter values this stabilizes the single-channel Kondo fixed point and a phase diagram is also mapped out for the model. In the single-channel version a plateau is found in the entropy at
S(TK<T<Delta0)=kBln2 between high-
T value,
S(TggDelta0)=kBln3, and the single-channel Kondo ground state value,
S(0)=kBln1.
