Spectral properties of Luther-Emery systems

Abstract

We calculate the spectral function of the Luther-Emery model which describes one-dimensional fermions with gapless charge and gapped spin degrees of freedom. We find a true singularity with interaction dependent exponents on the gapped spin dispersion and a finite maximum depending on the magnitude of the spin gap, on a shifted charge dispersion. We apply these results to photoemission experiments on charge density wave systems and discuss the spectral properties of a one-dimensional Mott insulator.

Finite Temperature Spectral Function of Mott Insulators and Charge Density Wave States

Fabian H. L. Eßler, Alexei M. Tsvelik

We calculate the low-temperature spectral function of one-dimensional incommensurate charge density wave states and half filled Mott insulators. At T=0 there are two dispersing features associated with the spin and charge degrees of freedom, respectively. We show that already at very low temperatures (compared to the gap) one of these features gets severely damped. We comment on implications of this result for photoemission experiments.

Spectral functions for the Tomonaga-Luttinger and Luther-Emery liquids

Dror Orgad

We calculate the finite temperature single-hole spectral function and the spin dynamic structure factor of a spinful one-dimensional Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Analytical expressions are obtained for a number of special cases. We also calculate the single-hole spectral function of a spin-gapped Luther -Emery liquid and obtain exact results at the free-fermion point K s = ½ These results may be applied to the analysis of angle-resolved photoemission and neutron scattering experiments on quasi-one-dimensional materials.

One-particle spectral functions of the one-dimensional Fermionic Hubbard model with one fermion per site at zero and finite magnetic fields

J. M. P. Carmelo, Tilen Čadež, Pedro D Sacramento

Although charge-spin separation has important consequences for the properties of one-dimensional (1D) Mott-Hubbard insulators, matrix elements in some of its dynamical correlation functions involve the coupling of spin and charge degrees of freedom. The corresponding interplay of the 1D Mott-Hubbard insulator's charge and spin degrees of freedom is an issue of both fundamental and technological interest, for instance, concerning their dynamics at subpicosecond timescales. On the other hand, the up- and down-spin one-particle spectral functions are the simplest dynamical correlation functions that involve excitation of both the charge and spin degrees of freedom. They are thus suitable to extract basic useful physical information on the above interplay at finite magnetic fields. Here the line shape of such functions at and in the $(k,\ensuremath{\omega})$ plane's vicinity of their cusp singularities is studied for the Mott-Hubbard insulator described by the 1D Hubbard model with one fermion per site at zero and finite magnetic fields. At zero field, they can be accessed in terms of electrons by photoemission experiments. At finite field, such functions and corresponding interplay of correlations and magnetic-field effects refer to an involved nonperturbative many-particle problem that is poorly understood. The Mott-Hubbard gap that separates the addition and removal spectral functions is calculated for all spin densities and interaction values. The qualitative differences in the one-particle properties of the Mott-Hubbard insulator and corresponding doped insulator are also investigated. The relation of our theoretical results and predictions to both condensed-matter and ultracold spin-$1/2$ atom systems is discussed.

Critical Properties in Dynamical Charge Correlation Function for the One-Dimensional Mott Insulator

Tatsuya Fujii, Norio Kawakami

Critical properties in the dynamical charge correlation function for the one-dimensional Mott insulator are studied. By properly taking into account {\it the final-state interaction} between the charge and spin degrees of freedom, we find that the edge singularity in the charge correlation function is governed by massless spinon excitations, although it is naively expected that spinons do not directly contribute to the charge excitation over the Hubbard gap. We obtain the momentum-dependent anomalous critical exponent by applying the finite-size scaling analysis to the Bethe ansatz solution of the half-filled Hubbard model.

Spectral Functions of One-Dimensional Electron Systems with Ising-Like Spin Gap

Masaya Ishihara, Masao Ogata

The effect of a spin gap on the photoemission spectral functions is studied in the one-dimensional t - J X X Z model. We find that spinon bands show up in the spectral functions but holon bands are obscured in the spin-gap cases. The reason for this is studied using a simple interpretation of the spectral functions, which is a convolution between the spectral function of spinless fermions and a spin excitation weight Z ( Q ). The spin gap suppresses the singularity of Z ( Q ), and as a result, only the holon bands are obscured. It is also shown that the spinon peaks lie along a cosine band and extend over the region | k |> k F . Finally, the momentum-dependent critical exponents of the power-law singularity at the spinon bands are determined.
