Hubbard model with smooth boundary conditions

Abstract

We apply recently developed smooth boundary conditions to the quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. At half-filling, where there is no sign problem, we show that the thermodynamic limit is reached more rapidly with smooth rather than with periodic or open boundary conditions. Away from half-filling, where ordinarily the simulation cannot be carried out at low temperatures due to the existence of the sign problem, we show that smooth boundary conditions allow us to reach significantly lower temperatures. We examine pairing correlation functions away from half-filling in order to determine the possible existence of a superconducting state. On a 10\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}10 lattice for $U=4$, at a filling of $〈n〉=0.87$ and an inverse temperature of $\ensuremath{\beta}=10$, we find enhancement of the $d$-wave correlations with respect to the noninteracting case, a possible sign of $d$-wave superconductivity.

Enhanced pair correlation functions in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Takashi Yanagisawa

In this study we have computed the pair correlation functions in the two-dimensional Hubbard model using a quantum Monte Carlo method. We employ a new diagonalization algorithm in the quantum Monte Carlo method which is free from the negative sign problem. We show that the d-wave pairing correlation function is indeed enhanced slightly for the positive on-site Coulomb interaction U when doping away from the half-filling. When the system size becomes large, the pair correlation function P d increases for U > 0 compared to the non-interacting case, while P d is suppressed for U > 0 when the system size is small. The enhancement ratio P d [ U ]/ P d [ U = 0] will give a criterion on the existence of superconductivity. The ratio P d [ U ]/ P d [ U = 0] increases almost linearly ∝ L when the system size L × L is increased. This increase is a good indication of the existence of a superconducting phase in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. There is, however, no enhancement of pair correlation functions in the half-filled case, which indicates the absence of superconductivity without hole doping.

Superconducting Correlationof Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model near Half-Filling

Masatoshi Imada

Superconducting correlation of the Hubbard model on a square lattice is reinvestigated by quantum Monte Carlo method. Results from more than one order of magnitude larger Monte Carlo steps than before are presented to discuss the convergence of the data to the ground state. By examining the dependence on the choice of initial trial states as well as on the Trotter number in detail, the superconducting correlation in the ground state is reliably obtained up to 12×12 lattice away from the half-filling and up to 16×16 lattice at the half-filling, which substantially improve former results near the half-filling. Various channels of pairing in the ground state show no system size dependence and remain quite short ranged at any filling including the region close to the half-filling. Numerical data show further evidence that neither extended s - nor d -wave superconducting state is possible in the two-dimensional Hubbard model.

Half-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice: Phase boundaries from determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations

Sebastião dos Anjos Sousa-Júnior, Natanael C. Costa, Raimundo R. dos Santos

The extended Hubbard model describes fermions on a lattice coupled through on-site, $U$, and first-neighbor, $V$, interactions. In the context of high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates, antiferromagnetic fluctuations may lead to an attractive channel, hence to superconductivity. Despite interest in the two-dimensional version of the model, the current knowledge about the phase diagram is still far from complete. Here, we report on the results of extensive determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations for this model at half filling, in which we have used the average sign of the product of fermionic determinants as an additional observable to locate critical points. We arrive at a ground state phase diagram in the $U\text{\ensuremath{-}}V$ plane in which the boundaries involving antiferromagnetic, charge-ordered, $s$- and $d$-wave superconductivity, and phase-separated phases are quantitatively set with good accuracy. We have also proposed a partial phase diagram, ${T}_{c}(U,V)$, featuring critical temperatures for the charge-density wave and $s$-wave superconducting phases.

Benchmark study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method

Mingpu Qin, Hao Shi, Shiwei Zhang

Ground-state properties of the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice are studied by the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method. Accurate results for energy, double occupancy, effective hopping, magnetization, and momentum distribution are calculated for interaction strengths of $U/t$ from 2 to 8, for a range of densities including half-filling and $n=0.3,0.5,0.6,\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0.75$, and $0.875$. At half-filling, the results are numerically exact. Away from half-filling, the constrained path Monte Carlo method is employed to control the sign problem. Our results are obtained with several advances in the computational algorithm, which are described in detail. We discuss the advantages of generalized Hartree-Fock trial wave functions and its connection to pairing wave functions, as well as the interplay with different forms of Hubbard-Stratonovich decompositions. We study the use of different twist angle sets when applying the twist averaged boundary conditions. We propose the use of quasirandom sequences, which improves the convergence to the thermodynamic limit over pseudorandom and other sequences. With it and a careful finite size scaling analysis, we are able to obtain accurate values of ground-state properties in the thermodynamic limit. Detailed results for finite-sized systems up to $16\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}16$ are also provided for benchmark purposes.

Numerical study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino, Robert L. Sugar +3 more

We report on a numerical study of the two-dimensional Hubbard model and describe two new algorithms for the simulation of many-electron systems. These algorithms allow one to carry out simulations within the grand canonical ensemble at significantly lower temperatures than had previously been obtained and to calculate ground-state properties with fixed numbers of electrons. We present results for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with half- and quarter-filled bands. Our results support the existence of long-range antiferromagnetic order in the ground state at half-filling and its absence at quarter-filling. Results for the magnetic susceptibility and the momentum occupation along with an upper bound to the spin-wave spectrum are given. We find evidence for an attractive effective d-wave pairing interaction near half-filling but have not found evidence for a phase transition to a superconducting state.

Numerical simulations: some results for the 2- and 3-D Hubbard models and a 2-D electron phonon model

Douglas J. Scalapino, Robert L. Sugar, Steven R. White +2 more

Numerical simulations on the half-filled 3-D Hubbard model clearly show the onset of Néel order. Simulations of the 2-D electron-phonon Holstein model show the competition between the formation of a Peierls-CDW state and a superconducting state. However, the behavior of the partly filled 2-D Hubbard model is more difficult to determine. At half-filling, the anti-ferromagnetic correlations grow as T is reduced. Doping away from half-filling supresses these correlations, and we find that there is a weak attractive pairing interaction in the d -wave channel. However, the strength of the pair field susceptibility is weak at the temperatures and lattice sizes we have simulated, and the nature of the low-temperature state of the nearly half-filled Hubbard model remains open.
