A model of strongly correlated electrons with condensed resonating-valence-bond ground states

Akinori Tanaka

We propose a new exactly solvable model of strongly correlated electrons. The model is based on a d – p model of the CuO 2 plane with infinitely large repulsive interactions on Cu-sites, and it contains additional correlated-hopping, pair-hopping and charge–charge interactions of electrons. For even numbers of electrons less than or equal to 2/3-filling, we construct the exact ground states of the model, all of which have the same energy and each of which is the unique ground state for a fixed electron number. It is shown that these ground states are the resonating-valence-bond states which are also regarded as condensed states in which all electrons are in a single two-electron state. We also show that the ground states exhibit off-diagonal long-range order.

Quantum Phases in a Doped Mott Insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

Jun Liu, Nandini Trivedi, Yongbin Lee +2 more

We propose the projected BCS wave function as the ground state for the doped Mott insulator SrCu2(BO3)2 on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. At half filling this wave function yields the exact ground state. Adding mobile charge carriers, we find a strong asymmetry between electron and hole doping. Upon electron doping an unusual metal with strong valence bond correlations forms. Hole doped systems are d-wave resonating valence bond superconductors in which superconductivity is strongly enhanced by the emergence of spatially varying plaquette bond order.

Resonating Valence Bond Wave Functions for Strongly Frustrated Spin Systems

Luca Capriotti, Federico Becca, Alberto Parola +1 more

The resonating-valence-bond (RVB) theory for two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets is shown to be the correct paradigm for large enough "quantum frustration." This scenario, proposed a long time ago but never confirmed by microscopic calculations, is strongly supported by a new type of variational wave function, which is extremely close to the exact ground state of the J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg model for 0.4 less than approximately J(2)/J(1) less than approximately 0.5. This wave function is proposed to represent the generic spin-half RVB ground state in spin liquids.
