Abstract

The authors propose a fast numerical renormalization group method --- the product wave function renormalization group (PWFRG) method --- for 1D quantum lattice models and 2D classical ones. A variational wave function, which is expressed by a matrix product, is improved through a self-consistent calculation. The new method has the same fixed point as the density matrix renormalization group method.

We propose a numerical self-consistent method for 3D classical lattice models, which optimizes the variational state written as two-dimensional product of tensors. The variational partition function is calculated by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), which is a variant of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Numerical efficiency of the method is observed via its application to the 3D Ising model. Variational states represented as products of local tensols have been used widely for calculating the ground-state energy in one-dimensional (1D) quantum systems and the free energy in two-dimensional (2D) classical statistical systems. In 1941 Kramers and Wannier calculated a lower bound of the partition function of the 2D

Product Wave Function Renormalization Group: Construction from the Matrix Product Point of View

Kouji Ueda, Tomotoshi Nishino, Kouichi Okunishi +3 more

We present a construction of a matrix product state (MPS) that approximates the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of a transfer matrix T, for the purpose of rapidly performing the infinite system density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method applied to two-dimensional classical lattice models. We use the fact that the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of T can be approximated by a state vector created from the upper or lower half of a finite size cluster. Decomposition of the obtained state vector into the MPS gives a way of extending the MPS, at the system size increment process in the infinite system DMRG algorithm. As a result, we successfully give the physical interpretation of the product wave function renormalization group (PWFRG) method, and obtain its appropriate initial condition.

Two-Site Shift Product Wave Function Renormalization Group Method Applied to Quantum Systems

Hiroshi Ueda, Tomotoshi Nishino, Koichi Kusakabe

We report a way of wave function estimation for the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method applied to quantum systems, which has 2-site modulation, when the system size extension is necessary in both the finite and the infinite algorithms. The estimation is performed by renormalization group (RG) transformation applied to the ground state wave function, which is represented as the matrix product. This RG scheme is known as the product wave function renormalization group (PWFRG) method. In order to treat the 2-site modulation, the operation of the RG transformation is shifted by amount of 2 lattice sites. It turns out that this 2-site shift algorithm provides better wave function estimation in the thermodynamic limit, compared with the previously known PWFRG algorithm.

Variational matrix-product-state approach to quantum impurity models

Andreas Weichselbaum, Frank Verstraete, Ulrich Schollwöck +2 more

We present a unified framework for renormalization group methods, including Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG), and White's density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), within the language of matrix-product-states. This allows improvements over Wilson's NRG for quantum impurity models, as we illustrate for the one-channel Kondo model. Moreover, we use a variational method for evaluating Green's functions. The proposed method is more flexible in its description of spectral properties at finite frequencies, opening the way to time-dependent, out-of-equilibrium impurity problems. It also substantially improves computational efficiency for one-channel impurity problems, suggesting potentially linear scaling of complexity for $n$-channel problems.

Renormalization group method for quasi-one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians

S. Moukouri, Laurent G. Caron

A density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for highly anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) systems is presented. The method consists of applying the usual DMRG in two steps. In the first step, a pure one-dimensional calculation along the longitudinal direction is made in order to generate a low-energy Hamiltonian. In the second step, the anisotropic 2D lattice is obtained by coupling in the transverse direction the 1D Hamiltonians. The method is applied to the anisotropic quantum spin-half Heisenberg model on a square lattice.
