Abstract

We study by exact diagonalization the two-dimensional t-J-Holstein model near quarter filling by retaining only a few phonon modes in momentum space. This truncation allows us to incorporate the full dynamics of the retained phonon modes. The behavior of the kinetic energy, the charge structure factor, and other physical quantities show the presence of a transition from a delocalized phase to a localized phase at a finite value of the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling. We have also given some indications that the e-ph coupling leads in general to a suppression of the pairing susceptibility at quarter filling.

Exact diagonalization study of the two-dimensionalt-Jmodel with adiabatic Holstein phonons: Single-hole case

Heinrich Röder, Holger Fehske, H. Büttner

We present exact results for the ground-state properties of the two-dimensional single-hole Peierls t-J model on finite square lattices, up to 18 effective sites in size. Using a Lanczos technique for unrestricted energy minimization with respect to local lattice distortions, we study the competition between intrasite electron-phonon and intersite antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling on the hole state over a wide range of interaction strengths. The structure of the doping state is examined by calculating local expectation values of spin and electron densities as well as magnetic and charge correlation functions. As the local electron-phonon interaction increases, we find a self-trapping transition from a delocalized hole (polaronlike) state to a mainly localized hole state. Despite a weak lattice distortion the delocalized case has similar properties to the ground state of the pure t-J model, whereas the localized hole state exhibits strong local lattice distortion and a quenched magnetic moment coupled ferromagnetically to an otherwise unperturbed AFM background. Aspects of the phase diagram are discussed.

The phase diagram of the 2D Holstein-t-J model near half filling

Holger Fehske, Heinrich Röder, Antonis D Mistriotis +1 more

The authors have used an exact diagonalization technique to explore the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Holstein-t-J model near half filling. The nature of the ground state is analysed, calculating self consistently the local lattice distortions, on-site spin and charge densities, as well as the magnetic structure form factor. They demonstrate that doped holes tend to form hole-polaron or bipolaron states. Compared to that in the uncorrelated model (spinless fermions), the critical electron-phonon coupling strength for the self-trapping transition of the doped charge carriers is considerably reduced by the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. The relevance to the cuprate superconductors is discussed.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at quarter filling

Sahinur Reja, Sudhakar Yarlagadda, P. B. Littlewood

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model, valid in a regime of both strong electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions and in the nonadiabatic limit ($t/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}\ensuremath{\le}1$), by using a nonperturbative approach. We obtain the phase diagram at quarter filling by employing a modified Lanczos method and studying various density-density correlations. The spin-spin AF (antiferromagnetic) interactions and nearest-neighbor repulsion, resulting from the e-e and the e-ph interactions, respectively, are the dominant terms (compared to hopping) and compete to determine the various correlated phases. As e-e interaction $(U/t)$ is increased, the system transits from an AF cluster to a correlated singlet phase through a discontinuous transition at all strong e-ph couplings $2\ensuremath{\le}g\ensuremath{\le}3$ considered. At higher values of $U/t$ and moderately strong e-ph interactions ($2\ensuremath{\le}g\ensuremath{\le}2.6$), the singlets break up to form an AF order and then to a paramagnetic order all in a single sublattice; whereas at larger values of $g$ ($>$$2.6$), the system jumps directly to the spin disordered charge-density-wave (CDW) phase.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half and quarter filling

Rahul P. Hardikar, Rudolf Torsten Clay

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling, the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes on-site pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge-density wave, while the Hubbard on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) as the electron-phonon coupling is increased, first a spin gap opens, followed by the Peierls transition. Between these two transitions, the metallic intermediate phase has a spin gap, no charge gap, and properties similar to the negative-$U$ Hubbard model. (ii) The transitions between Mott/intermediate and intermediate/Peierls states are of the Kosterlitz-Thouless form. (iii) For larger $U$, the two transitions merge at a tricritical point into a single first-order Mott/Peierls transition. In addition, we show that an intermediate phase also occurs in the quarter-filled model.

Intermediate Phase of the One Dimensional Half-Filled Hubbard-Holstein Model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Rahul P. Hardikar

We present a numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard on-site interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or Mott phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic phase exists between the Peierls and Mott phases. We confirm the intermediate phase, and show that the Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K(rho) >1 in this region, indicating dominant superconducting pair correlations. We explore the full phase diagram as a function of Hubbard U, phonon coupling constant, and phonon frequency.

On The Stability Of Polaronic Superlattices In Strongly Coupled Electron-Phonon Systems

Gerhard Wellein, Holger Fehske, H. Büttner +1 more

We investigate the interplay of electron–phonon (EP) coupling and strong electronic correlations in the frame of the two–dimensional (2D) Holstein t–J model (HtJM), focusing on polaronic ordering phenomena for the quarter–filled band case. The use of direct Lanczos diagonalization on finite lattices allows us to include the effects of quantum phonon fluctuations in the calculation of spin/charge structure factors and hole–phonon correlation functions. In the adiabatic strong coupling regime we found evidence for “self-localization ” of polaronic carriers in a (π, π) charge-modulated structure, a type of superlattice solidification reminiscent of those observed in the nickel perovskites La2−xSrxNiO4+y. Electron diffraction measurements on the nickel oxide analogue of the layered high–Tc 214 copper oxide compound, La2−xNixCuO4, reveal a (π, π)–superstructure spot at quarter filling, i.e. for x = 0.5, which has been interpreted as sign of a truly 2D polaron ordered phase [1]. To study charge – and spin–ordering phenomena in such systems, exhibiting besides a substantial EP interaction strong Coulomb correlations, let us consider the planar t-J model with an additional on-site Holstein hole-phonon coupling:
