Abstract

One of the most debated issues related to high-$T_c$ superconductivity is the symmetry of the Cooper pair or the gap function. In this report, we present numerical results regarding the gap function in strongly correlated electron systems using $t-J$ and Hubbard models in one and two dimensions. To this end, we use exact diagonalization to study the ground states of 8- and 16-site clusters consisting of single or coupled layers. We calculate a reduced two-particle density matrix in momentum space which is a measure of the gap function. We then analyze the eigenvectors of this density matrix, which display the possible Cooper pair symmetries. The eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue indicates a vanishing gap on the Fermi surface (which is in favour of odd-gap pairing) although $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry is seen to be a very close contestant in many of the cases.

Correlation Induced Vanishing of the Gap Function on the Fermi Surface in High $T_c$ Superconductors

We present physical arguments as well as numerical evidence to show that the Cooper pair (gap) function vanishes on the Fermi surface in strongly correlated electron systems such as \tJ and \lU Hubbard models in one and two dimensions. Using exact diagonalization, we study a correlation function which is a measure of the gap function even in a finite system, and present numerical results for this correlation function on small clusters of 8 (Hubbard) and 16 ($t-J$) sites.

Superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model based on the exact pair potential

André LeClair

We analyze solutions to a superconducting gap equation based on the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor hopping. The Cooper pair potential can be calculated exactly and expressed in terms of elliptic functions. The Fermi surfaces at finite temperature and chemical potential are calculated based on the exact two-body S-matrix of the Hubbard model using the formalism we recently developed, which allows variation of hole doping. The resulting solutions to the gap equation are strongly anisotropic, namely largest in the anti-nodal direction, and zero in the nodal directions of the Brillouin zone. For U/t = 13 and t' /t =-0.3, appropriate to BSCO, and a physically natural choice for the cut-off, our self-contained analytic calculations yield the gap in the anti-nodal direction Delta/t = 0.06 and a maximum Tc/t = 0.04 at hole doping h=0.15. For phenomenological fits to the Fermi surfaces for cuprates, we obtain the comparable value Tc/t = 0.03 at optimal doping, both in good agreement with experiments. The superconducting gap is non-zero for all hole-doping h < 0.35, and increases all the way down to zero doping, suggesting that it evolves into the pseudogap.

Fidelity study of the superconducting phase diagram in the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model

Chunjing Jia, Brian Moritz, Cheng-Chien Chen +2 more

Extensive numerical studies have demonstrated that the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model contains much of the key physics in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, there is no definitive proof that the Hubbard model truly possesses a superconducting ground state or, if it does, of how it depends on model parameters. To answer these longstanding questions, we study an extension of the Hubbard model including an infinite-range $d$-wave pair field term, which precipitates a superconducting state in the $d$-wave channel. Using exact diagonalization on 16-site square clusters, we study the evolution of the ground state as a function of the strength of the pairing term. This is achieved by monitoring the fidelity metric of the ground state, as well as determining the ratio between the two largest eigenvalues of the $d$-wave pair/spin/charge-density matrices. The calculations show a $d$-wave superconducting ground state in doped clusters bracketed by a strong antiferromagnetic state at half filling controlled by the Coulomb repulsion $U$ and a weak short-range checkerboard charge ordered state at larger hole doping controlled by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. We also demonstrate that negative ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ plays an important role in facilitating $d$-wave superconductivity.

Calculation of Δ(k,ω) for a two-dimensional t−J cluster

Didier Poilblanc, Douglas J. Scalapino

Using numerical techniques, the diagonal and off-diagonal superconducting one-electron Green's functions are calculated for a two-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model on a periodic 32-site cluster at low doping. From these Green's functions, the momentum and frequency dependence of both the real and the imaginary parts of the pairing gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}(\mathbf{k},\ensuremath{\omega})$ are extracted. It has ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ symmetry and exhibits $\ensuremath{\omega}$-dependent structure over a scale of several J. The pairing gap at the gap edge $\ensuremath{\Delta}(\mathbf{k},\ensuremath{\omega}={\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\mathbf{k}})$ at the antinode persists down to small $J/t$ values. The frequency- and momentum-dependent renormalized energy and renormalization factor are also calculated.

Superconductivity of the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model with a SmallU

Jun Kondo

Superconductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with t ′ =0 has been examined in the small U limit, where the matrix element of pair scattering is expressed as V k k ′ = U + U 2 χ( k + k ′ ). The susceptibility χ( k ) of the unperturbed band has been evaluated accurately and the gap equation, which reduces to a seqular equation, has been solved precisely. The gap is found to be of the form ∝exp (-2 t 2 / x U 2 ), where x is the eigenvalue of the seqular equation. We have found the largest eigenvalue x is always positive (superconductive). The symmetry of the gap function is b 1g for the electron density n e >0.6 and b 2g for n e <0.6, depending on the peak position of χ( k ). It is roughly (π, π) for the former case and (π, 0) for the latter. The superconductivity seems to prevail even for n e →0. These results can be explained with a simple criterion.

Calculation of Delta (k,omega) for a 2D t-J cluster

Didier Poilblanc, Douglas J. Scalapino

Using numerical techniques, the diagonal and off-diagonal superconducting one-electron Green's functions are calculated for a two-dimensional (2D) t-J model on a periodic 32-site cluster at low doping. From these Green's functions, the momentum and frequency dependence of the pairing gap $\Delta ({\bf k}, \omega)$ are extracted. It has $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry and exhibits $\omega$-dependent structure which depend upon J/t. We find that the pairing gap persists down to small J/t values. The frequency- and momentum-dependent renormalized energy and renormalization factor are also calculated.
