MONTE CARLO STUDIES OF ISING SPIN GLASSES AND RANDOM FIELD SYSTEMS

Abstract

We review recent numerical progress in the study of finite dimensional strongly disordered magnetic systems like spin glasses and random field systems. In particular we report in some details results for the critical properties and the non-equilibrium dynamics of Ising spin glasses. Furthermore we present an overview over recent investigations on the random field Ising model and finally of quantum spin glasses.

PHASE TRANSITIONS IN SPIN GLASSES

A. P. Young

Some recent progress in Monte Carlo simulations of spin glasses will be presented. The problem of slow dynamics at low temperatures is partially alleviated by use of the parallel tempering (replica exchange) method. A useful technique to check for equilibration (applicable only for a Gaussian distribution) will be discussed. It will be argued that a finite size scaling analysis of the scaled correlation length of the system is a good approach with which to investigate phase transitions in spin glasses. This method will be used to study two questions: (i) whether there is a phase transition in zero field in the Heisenberg spin glass in three dimensions, and (ii) whether there is phase transition in a magnetic field in an Ising spin glass, also in three dimensions.

THEORY OF THE RANDOM FIELD ISING MODEL

Thomas Nattermann

A review is given on some recent developments in the theory of the Ising model in a random field. This model is a good representation of a large number of impure materials. After a short repetition of earlier arguments, which prove the absence of ferromagnetic order in $d\le 2$ space dimensions for uncorrelated random fields, we consider different random field correlations and in particular the generation of uncorrelated from anti-correlated random fields by thermal fluctuations. In discussing the phase transition, we consider the transition to be characterized by a divergent correlation length and compare the critical exponents obtained from various methods (real space RNG, Monte Carlo calculations, weighted mean field theory etc.). The ferromagnetic transition is believed to be preceded by a spin glass transition which manifests itself by replica symmetry breaking. In the discussion of dynamical properties, we concentrate mainly on the zero temperature depinning transition of a domain wall, which represents a critical point far from equilibrium with new scaling relations and critical exponents.

The four dimensional Ising spin glass: A Monte Carlo study (invited)

R. N. Bhatt, Joseph D. Reger, A. P. Young

We describe results of Monte Carlo simulation studies on the Ising spin glass in four dimensions on a hypercubic lattice with nearest neighbor bonds. Studies of the equilibrium static properties show that the system undergoes a genuine phase transition to an ordered spin glass phase. Critical dynamical behavior is analyzed to obtain the dynamic exponent. Finally, we describe results on the spin glass phase, in particular the finite size scaling of the order parameter distribution function, and compare it with existing models of the spin glass phase, namely the droplet model and the Parisi solution for the low temperature phase of the infinite range spin glass.

HIGH SPEED ALGORITHMS AND SIMULATIONS OF THE CRITICAL DYNAMICS OF THE ISING MODEL

Hans-Otto Heuer

We review the development of Monte Carlo algorithms for the simulation of the Ising model with local dynamics. The multi lattice coding algorithm for the pure and for the site-disordered Ising model is described in detail. Application of these algorithms on fast vector computers have led to new progress concerning the critical dynamics of the pure Ising model leading to the critical exponent z = 2:05. The importance of disorder for the critical dynamics of the Ising model has been investigated recently. We review the numerical results and compare with theoretical predictions. A crossover scenario is found as for the static behavior with an effective dynamical exponent z = 1:75 fl. 1 Introduction The Ising model is a standard model in statistical physics for the description of a ferromagnet in an extremely simplified manner. It is assumed that quantum spin operators may be replaced by classical spins S i = \\Sigma 1 which are oriented parallel or antiparallel to a magnetic filed H: H...

Nature of the Spin Glass Phase in Finite Dimensional (Ising) Spin Glasses

Juan Jesus Ruiz-Lorenzo

Spin glasses are the paradigm of complex systems. These materials present really slow dynamics. However, the nature of the spin glass phase in finite dimensional systems is still controversial. Different theories describing the low temperature phase have been proposed: droplet, replica symmetry breaking and chaotic pairs. We present analytical studies of critical properties of spin glasses, in particular, critical exponents at and below the phase transition, existence of a phase transition in a magnetic field, computation of the lower critical dimension (in presence/absence of a magnetic field). We also introduce some rigorous results based on the concept of metastate. Finally, we report some numerical results regarding the construction of the Aizenman-Wehr metastate, scaling of the correlation functions in the spin glass phase and existence of a phase transition in a field, confronting these results with the predictions of different theories.

RECENT EXPERIMENTS ON MEMORY AND NON-EQUILIBRIUM ASPECTS IN SPIN GLASSES : AN OVERVIEW

L. Lundgren

Recent experiments on the non-equilibrium dynamics of spin glasses are reviewed. The experiments are discussed within a physical picture based on recent domain pictures of the spin glass phase introduced by Fisher and Huse, and by Koper and Hilhorst.
