Exact solution of a one-dimensional fermion model with interchain tunneling

Abstract

A fermion model consisting of two chains with interchain tunneling is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe-ansatz method. The interchain tunneling leads to Cooper-pair-like bound states and a threshold energy is required to overcome the binding energy. The correlation functions manifest superconducting properties.

A new one-dimensional model of strongly correlated fermions on N sublattices with density-density interaction and pair hopping between sublattices is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe ansatz method. The density-density and pair correlation functions are calculated which manifest superconducting properties for N ⩾ 3.

A New Integrable Two-Parameter Model of Strongly Correlated Electrons in One Dimension

R. Z Bariev, A Klümper, J Zittartz

A new one-dimensional fermion model depending on two independent interaction parameters is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe-ansatz method. The Hamiltonian of the model contains the Hubbard interaction and correlated hopping as well as pair hopping terms. The density-density and pair correlations are calculated which manifest superconducting properties in certain regimes of the phase diagram.

Renormalization group approach for highly anisotropic two-dimensional fermion systems: Application to coupled Hubbard chains

S. Moukouri

I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model. As a prelude to this study, I compare the numerical results to the exact one for the tight-binding model. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}25$. I then apply the method to the interacting case. I find that for strong Hubbard interaction, the ground state is dominated by magnetic correlations. These correlations are robust even in the presence of strong frustration. Interchain pair tunneling is negligible in the singlet and triplet channels and is not enhanced by frustration. For weak Hubbard couplings, due to interchain interaction, interchain nonlocal singlet pair tunneling is enhanced and magnetic correlations are strongly reduced. This suggests a possible superconductive ground state. The pairing mechanism is reminiscent of the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism.

Cooper pairs and exclusion statistics from coupled free-fermion chains

Paul Fendley, Kareljan Schoutens

We show how to couple two free-fermion chains so that the excitations consist of Cooper pairs with zero energy, and free particles obeying (mutual) exclusion statistics. This behaviour is reminiscent of anyonic superconductivity, and of a ferromagnetic version of the Haldane–Shastry spin chain, although here the interactions are local. We solve this model using the nested Bethe ansatz, and find all the eigenstates; the Cooper pairs correspond to exact-string or '0/0' solutions of the Bethe equations. We show how the model possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra, which is a supersymmetric version of the Yangian symmetry algebra for the Haldane–Shastry model.

A one-dimensional integrable model of fermions with multi-particle hopping

R. Z. Bariev, Andreas Klümper, Andreas Schadschneider +1 more

A model with both single-particle and multi-particle hopping of electrons on a one-dimensional 'triangular' lattice is formulated and solved exactly by Bethe ansatz. On the basis of the exact calculation of the asymptotic behaviour of correlation functions we find a transition between the normal state and a state with a tendency to 'superconductivity'. The latter state is confined to small densities of electrons up to a critical density rho c .

Low-temperature properties of the Hubbard chain with an attractive interaction

Kong-Ju-Bock Lee, P. Schlottmann

The thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz equations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model with attractive on-site interaction of the electrons are solved numerically at low temperatures. At low temperatures the dominant states consist of spin-paired electrons (Cooper-pair--like) and excitations of such pairs (without breaking up the singlet bound states). A critical field (energy required to depair a Cooper pair) is obtained at T=0 (note that the superconducting ${T}_{c}$=0), which disappears for T\ensuremath{\ne}0. The specific heat is linear in temperature, and the dependence of the coefficient \ensuremath{\gamma} on band filling and magnetic field is discussed. The excitation spectrum shows some analogies with that of resonant valence bonds in two dimensions.
