Statistics transmutations to superfermions in fractional quantum Hall effect systems are considered in the Hartree-Fock approximation and in the RPA. The Hartree-Fock ground state energy shows that the transmutations are not energetically preferable. Within the RPA it is found that the system exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect.
The formalism introduced in a previous paper is used for discussing the Coulomb interaction of many electrons moving in two space-dimensions in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The matrix element of the Coulomb interaction is evaluated in the new basis, whose states are invariant under discrete translations (up to a gauge transformation). This paper is devoted to the case of low filling factor, thus we limit ourselves to the lowest Landau level and to spins all oriented along the magnetic field. For the case of filling factor νf = 1/u we give an Ansatz on the state of many electrons which provides a good approximated solution of the Hartree–Fock equation. For general filling factor νf = u′/u a trial state is given which converges very rapidly to a solution of the self-consistent equation. We generalize the Hartree–Fock equation by considering some correlation: all quantum states are allowed for the u′ electrons with the same translation quantum numbers. Numerical results are given for the mean energy and the energy bands, for some values of the filling factor (νf = 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 1/4, 3/4, 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5). Our results agree numerically with the Charge Density Wave approach. The boundary conditions are shown to be very important: only large systems (degeneracy of Landau level over 200) are not affected by the boundaries. Therefore results obtained on small scale systems are somewhat unreliable. The relevance of the results for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect is briefly discussed.
The interaction energy of the two-dimensional electron system in the region of fractional quantum Hall effect is considered within the Chern–Simons composite fermion approach. In the limit when Coulomb interaction is very small comparing to the cyclotron energy the RPA results are obtained for the fillings ν=1/3, 1/5, 2/3, 2/5, 3/7 and compared with the exact diagonalization results for small systems (extrapolated for infinite systems). They show very poor agreement suggesting the need for looking for alternative approaches.
We present an exact scheme of bosonization for anyons (including fermions) in the two-dimensional manifold of the quantum Hall fluid. This gives every fractional quantum Hall phase of the electrons one or more dual bosonic descriptions. For interacting electrons, the statistical transmutation from anyons to bosons allows us to explicitly derive the microscopic statistical interaction between the anyons, in the form of the effective two-body and few-body interactions. This also leads to a number of unexpected topological phases of the single component bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect that may be experimentally accessible. Numerical analysis of the energy spectrum and ground state entanglement properties are carried out for simple examples.
We have studied the ground-state (GS) properties of fractional-statistics particles (anyons) by exact numerical solution for small systems. We have seen in our results (depending on the choice of parameters for the Hamiltonian) the fractional-statistics analogs of a number of well-known ground states for conventional particles, including particularly the quantum Hall state (which we relate to the observed ‘hierarchy’ states), and a superconducting GS, the latter being formed (for half-statistics particles or semions) by pairing. We suggest possible experimental signatures for distinguishing semion from fermion superconductors. We also directly test the ‘mean-field theory’ of statistics against our exact results, and find it to treat GS properties well.
We calculate the ground state energies and wavefunctions for small systems of fermions on a lattice using singly and doubly periodic boundary conditions. We find minima in the ground state energy when the magnetic flux per plaquette corresponds to filling fractions with odd denominators. We interpret these minima in terms of fractional quantum Hall states. The pair correlation function at nearest and next-nearest neighbours is calculated as a function of the repulsive interaction strength between particles.
A topological argument similar to that of Leinaas and Myrheim implies that a non-trivial statistical phase factor can also arise from exchanging twice a pair of distinguishable particles in two dimensions. Some general properties of this phase factor are deduced. Wilczek's model for anyons and the Laughlin theory for the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall ground states are examined in light of these properties, and the former is generalized for systems containing many species of anyons. The statistical properties of holons and spinons relative to each other are briefly discussed as an example.
