Abstract

With simple, exact arguments we show that the surface magnetization ${m}_{1}$ at the extraordinary and normal transitions and the surface energy density ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{1}$ at the ordinary, extraordinary, and normal transitions of semi-infinite $d$-dimensional Ising systems have leading thermal singularities $B\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{|t|}^{2\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, with the same critical exponent and amplitude ratio as the bulk free energy ${f}_{b}(t,0)$. The derivation is carried out in three steps: (i) By tracing out the surface spins, the semi-infinite Ising model with supercritical surface enhancement $g$ and vanishing surface magnetic field ${h}_{1}$ is mapped exactly onto a semi-infinite Ising model with subcritical surface enhancement, a nonzero surface field, and irrelevant additional surface interactions. This establishes the equivalence of the extraordinary (${h}_{1}=0, g>0$) and normal (${h}_{1}\ensuremath{\ne}0, g<0$) transitions. (ii) The magnetization ${m}_{1}$ at the interface of an infinite system with uniform temperature $t$ and a nonzero magnetic field $h$ in the half-space $z>0$ only is shown to be proportional to ${f}_{b}(t,0)\ensuremath{-}{f}_{b}(t,h)$. (iii) The energy density ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{1}$ at the interface of an infinite system with temperatures ${t}_{+}$ and $t$ in the half-spaces $z>0$ and $z<0$ and no magnetic field is shown to be proportional to ${f}_{b}(t,0)\ensuremath{-}{f}_{b}({t}_{+},0)$.

Surface critical behaviour and local operators with boundary-induced critical profiles

Theodore W. Burkhardt, John Cardy

The authors present a simple argument showing that the surface energy density of a semi-infinite d-dimensional spin system has, in general, a leading thermal singularity of the same form, mod T-T c mod 2- alpha , as the bulk free energy. At bulk criticality energy-energy correlations decay as r -2d parallel to the surface. These results hold for both free and fixed boundary spins, i.e. the 'ordinary' and 'extraordinary' transitions. The extraordinary critical behaviour of the magnetisation is the same as that of the energy density. They also confirm and generalise these results in two dimensions with an independent approach based on conformal invariance.

Duality of ordinary and extraordinary surface critical behaviour in the two-dimensional Potts model

Theodore W. Burkhardt

The dual relationship between semi-infinite two-dimensional q-state Potts models with free and fixed spin boundary conditions is used to study the surface critical behaviour at the bulk critical temperature with fixed boundary spins, i.e. the extraordinary transition. Both the magnetisation and energy densities have singularities of the same form mod T-T c mod 2- alpha as the bulk free energy. At T=T c both the spin-spin and energy-energy correlations decay as r -4 parallel to the surface.

Surface critical behavior in Ising magnets: Exact results

Douglas B. Abraham, Anna Maciołek

An exact derivation of the surface magnetizations of the two phases m(1)I and m(1)II coexisting below the bulk critical temperature for the semi-infinite two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet subject to a surface field is given. The surface critical behavior of the difference m(1)I - m(1)II is that of the ordinary transition only in a limit of a weak surface field below the wetting temperature.

Critical behavior at supercritical surface enhancement: Temperature singularity of surface magnetization and order-parameter profile to one-loop order

Hans Werner Diehl, Martin Smock

The surface critical behavior of semi-infinite systems belonging to the Ising universality class with short-range interactions is investigated for supercritical surface enhancement -c>0 and vanishing surface field ${\mathit{h}}_{1}$. Renormalization-group improved perturbation theory is applied to the standard semi-infinite scalar ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\varphi}}}^{4}$ model in d=4-\ensuremath{\epsilon} dimensions to compute the order-parameter profile to one-loop order both for temperatures T with \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\equiv}(T-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{b}}$)/${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{b}}$\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0 and \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0. The associated scaling functions are found to cross smoothly over from their short-distance behavior for distances z\ensuremath{\ll}${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{b}}$ (=bulk correlation length) to their long-distance behavior for z\ensuremath{\gg}${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{b}}$ without showing the peculiar nonmonotonic behavior asserted by Peliti and Leibler [J. Phys. C 16, 2635 (1983)]. Furthermore, the short-distance behavior of the profiles is shown to be fully consistent with a \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\tau}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}^{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$ singularity of the surface magnetization ${\mathit{m}}_{1}$ plus a regular background term; that is, in contrast to results published recently by other authors, the amplitudes ${\mathit{A}}_{+}$ and ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ of the contributions ${\mathit{A}}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\tau} to ${\mathit{m}}_{1}$ linear in \ensuremath{\tau}>0 or \ensuremath{\tau}0 agree to one-loop order. Finally, we confirm that the universal profiles for the critical adsorption of fluids (governed by the critical-adsorption fixed point at c=+\ensuremath{\infty} and ${\mathit{h}}_{1}$=\ensuremath{\infty}) agree with the previous ones pertaining to the negative-c-transition fixed point at c=-\ensuremath{\infty} and ${\mathit{h}}_{1}$=0.

Magnetization Profile in the d = 2 Semi-Infinite Ising Model and Crossover between Ordinary and Normal Transition

Peter Czerner, Uwe Ritschel, Typeset Using Revtex

We theoretically investigate the spatial dependence of the order parameter of the two-dimensional semi-infinite Ising model with a free surface at or above the bulk critical temperature. Special attention is paid to the influence of a surface magnetic field h1 and the crossover between the fixed points at h1 = 0 and h1 = ∞. The sharp increase of the magnetization m(z) close to the boundary generated by a small h1, which was found by the present authors in the three-dimensional model, is also seen in two dimensions. There, however, the universal short-distance power law is modified by a logarithm, m(z) ∼ z κ ln z, where κ, the difference between the scaling dimensions of h1 and the bulk magnetization, has the exact value 3/8. By means of a phenomenological scaling analysis, the short-distance behavior can be related to the logarithmic dependence of the surface magnetization m1 on h1. Our results, which are corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations, provide a deeper understanding of the existing exact results concerning the local magnetization and relate the short-distance phenomena in two dimensions to those in higher dimensionality.

Magnetization Profile in the D= 2 Semi-Infinite Ising Model and Crossover Between Ordinary and Normal Transition

Peter Czerner, Uwe Ritschel

We study the two-dimensional semi-infinite Ising model with a free surface at or near bulk criticality. Special attention is paid to the influence of a boundary magnetic field h1 on the surface-near regime and the crossover between the fixed points at h1=0 and h1=∞. Near the surface, a smallh1 causes a steeply increasing magnetization m(z)~z3/8 log z as the distance z increases away from the surface. By means of a phenomenological scaling analysis, this phenomenon can be related to the well-known logarithmic dependence of the surface magnetization m1 on h1. Our analysis provides a deeper understanding of the existing exact results on m(z) and relates the short-distance phenomena in d=2 to those in higher dimensions. Both the results of the scaling analysis and the exact analytic profiles are corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations.
