Abstract

We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional U-V model at quarter filling in the most general case where the on-site and first-neighbor interactions U and V can be both attractive and repulsive. The results have been obtained using exact diagonalization of small clusters and variational techniques, as well as exact results in various limits. We have analyzed four properties of the ground state: (i) whether it is insulating or metallic; (ii) whether it is homogeneous or phase separated; (iii) whether it has a spin gap; (iv) whether it has dominant superconducting fluctuations. With eight phases, the resulting phase diagram is unexpectedly rich. The four phases not found in the weak coupling limit are: (i) an insulating phase when U and V are large enough; (ii) a region of phase separation when V is attractive; (iii) another region of phase separation when V is large enough and U small; (iv) a region with dominant superconducting fluctuations when V is intermediate and U small. The actual nature of this last plase, which has pairs but no spin gap, is not fully clear yet.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model at Quarter-Filling

Frédéric Mila, X. Zotos

We used exact diagonalization of small clusters and exact results in various limits to determine the phase diagram and the critical exponents of the one-dimensional (1D) U-V model at quarter-filling. We found an instability of the Luttinger liquid to a charge density wave (CDW) insulator across a boundary going from ( U, V ) = (+ ∞ , 2 t ) to (4 t , + ∞ ). In the metallic phase, the dominant fluctuations are superconducting if V is large enough and spin density wave (SDW) otherwise. In the latter case, the critical exponent α of the momentum distribution does not exceed 9/16. The relevance of these results to 1D organic conductors is discussed.

Phase diagram of the extended attractive Hubbard model in one dimension

Kazuhiko Kuroki, Koichi Kusakabe, Hideo Aoki

Phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with on-site repulsion and nearest-neighbor attraction is obtained for various band fillings, covering the strong-correlation regime, in one dimension by mapping the system to the Tomonaga-Luttinger model with use of exact diagonalization of finite systems. We find that the strong electron correlation makes the superconducting region, which is sandwiched between spin-density wave and phase-separation regions, significantly wider than expected from the weak-coupling g-ology.

Possible exotic phases in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Anders W. Sandvik, David K Campbell

We investigate numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, including an on-site interaction U and a nearest-neighbor interaction V. We focus on the ground state phases of the model in the $V\ensuremath{\gg}U$ region, where previous studies have suggested the possibility of dominant superconducting pairing fluctuations before the system phase separates at a critical value ${V=V}_{\mathrm{PS}}.$ Using quantum Monte Carlo methods on lattices much larger than in previous Lancz\"os diagonalization studies, we determine the boundary of phase separation, the Luttinger-liquid correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ and other correlation functions in this region. We find that phase separation occurs for V significantly smaller than previously reported. In addition, for negative U, we find that a uniform state reenters from phase separation as the electron density is increased towards half filling. For $V<{V}_{\mathrm{PS}},$ our results show that superconducting fluctuations are not dominant. The system behaves asymptotically as a Luttinger liquid with ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}<1,$ but we also find strong low-energy (but gapped) charge-density fluctuations at a momentum not expected for a standard Luttinger liquid.

Superconducting ground state in a model with bond-charge interaction

Marco Airoldi, Alberto Parola

An electronic Hubbard-type model with bond-charge interaction and on-site repulsion U is studied in one and two dimensions. Evidence is provided in favor of superconductivity, without phase separation, for U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n), although no explicit attraction between particles is present in the Hamiltonian. The presence of a bound state for two particles in vacuum in D=1 and 2 (but not for D=3) suggests that, at low density and low dimensionality, superconductivity is due to condensation of preexistent pairs (dimers). The one-dimensional (1D) phase diagram is studied analytically as well as numerically and shows a transiiton between a Luttinger liquid and a strong-coupling phase with diverging superconducting susceptibility. Estimates of critical exponents are given at low density and at quarter filling for several values of the parameters. The 2D model at quarter filling is analyzed by Lanczos diagonalization on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 cluster. The numerical results are consistent with the phase diagram obtained by BCS mean-field theory and is qualitatively similar to the 1D case: a ground state with spin gap and off-diagonal long-range order at U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n); and a Fermi liquid above ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ with no sign of phase separation.

Local spin clustering and phase separation in the Hubbard model

Antonis N. Andriotis, Eleftherios N. Economou, C. M. Soukoulis

The authors use an unrestricted self-consistent mean-field approach to the one-dimensional periodic Hubbard model to study its ground-state phase diagram. Their approach allows one to incorporate spin and electron correlations as well as spin and charge fluctuations. The authors find that a homogeneous antiferromagnetic state exists only at half-filling, where the state is also insulating. Off half-filling, it was found that the ground state of the Hubbard model consists of clusters with different magnetic and charge properties. For certain values of the parameters of the system the cluster formation develops to a full phase separation. The effects of the intersite repulsive or attractive interaction on the ground-state properties were also examined. Implications of the authors results for the existence of a superconducting ground state as well as comparison with other studies will be briefly discussed.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional t - J model

Alexander Moreno, Alejandro Muramatsu, Salvatore R. Manmana

We examine the ground-state phase diagram of the $t$-$J$ model in one dimension by means of the density matrix renormalization group. This model is characterized by a rich phase diagram as a function of the exchange interaction $J$ and the density $n$, displaying Luttinger-liquid (LL) behavior both of repulsive and attractive (i.e., superconducting) natures, a spin-gap phase, and phase separation. The phase boundaries separating the repulsive from the attractive LL phase as $J$ is increased, and also the boundaries of the spin-gap region at low densities, and phase separation at even larger $J$, are determined on the basis of correlation functions and energy gaps. In particular, we shed light on a contradiction between variational and renormalization-group (RG) results about the extent of the spin-gap phase, which results larger than the variational but smaller than the RG one. Furthermore, we show that the spin gap can reach a sizable value ($~0.1t$) at low enough filling, such that preformed pairs should be observable at temperatures below these energy scales. No evidence for a phase with clustering of more than two particles is found on approaching phase separation.
