Abstract

We calculate the exact dynamical magnetic structure factor S(Q,E) in the ground state of a one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet with gapless free S=1/2 spinon excitations, the Haldane-Shastry model with inverse-square exchange, which is in the same low-energy universality class as Bethe's nearest-neighbor exchange model. Only two-spinon excited states contribute, and S(Q,E) is found to be a very simple integral over these states.

DynamicalT=0 correlations of theS=1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with 1/ r2 exchange in a magnetic field

J. C. Talstra, F. D. M. Haldane

We present a selection rule for matrix elements of local spin operators in the S=1/2 Haldane-Shastry model. Based on this rule we extend a recent exact calculation by Haldane and Zirnbauer of the ground-state dynamical spin correlation function ${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$(n,t)=〈0\ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{a}}$(n,t)${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{b}}$(0,0)\ensuremath{\Vert}0〉 and its Fourier transform ${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$(Q,E) of this model to a finite magnetic field. In zero field, only two-spinon excitations contribute to the spec tral function; in the (positively) partially spin-polarized case, there are two types of elementary excitations: spinons (\ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{z}}$=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1/2) and magnons (\ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{z}}$=-1). The magnons are divided into left- or right-moving branches. The only classes of excited states contributing to the spectral functions are (I) two spinons, (II) two spinons+one magnon, (IIIa) two spinons+two magnons (moving in opposite directions), and (IIIb) one magnon. The contributions to the various correlations are ${\mathit{S}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}+}$: (I); ${\mathit{S}}^{\mathit{z}\mathit{z}}$: (I)+(II); ${\mathit{S}}^{+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$: (I)+(II)+(III). In the zero-field limit there are no magnons, while in the fully polarized case, there are no spinons. We discuss the relation of the spectral functions to correlations of the Calogero-Sutherland model at coupling \ensuremath{\lambda}=2.

Two-spinon dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional s= Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller, A. Hamid Bougourzi +2 more

The exact expression derived by Bougourzi, Couture, and Kacir for the two-spinon contribution to the dynamic spin structure factor S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) of the one-dimensional s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at T=0 is evaluated for direct comparison with finite-chain transition rates (N\ensuremath{\leqslant}28) and an approximate analytical result previously inferred from finite-N data, sum rules, and Bethe ansatz calculations. The two-spinon excitations account for 72.89% of the total intensity in S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}). The singularity structure of the exact result is determined analytically and its spectral-weight distribution evaluated numerically over the entire range of the two-spinon continuum. The leading singularities of the frequency-dependent spin autocorrelation function, static spin structure factor, and q dependent susceptibility are determined via sum rules. The impact of the non-two-spinon excitations on the integrated intensity, the susceptibility, the frequency moments, and the Euclidian time representation of S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) is studied on the basis of finite-size data.

Spin excitation spectra of two dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with checkerboard structures.

Yining Xu, Zijian Xiong, Han-Qing Wu +1 more

We study the excitation spectra of two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with checkerboard structures using stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function obtained from quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The checkerboard models have two different antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, and the tuning parameter $g$ is defined as $J_{2}/J_{1}$. The dynamic structure factors are systematically calculated in all phases of the models as well as at the critical points. To give a full understanding of the dynamic spectra, wave theory is employed to explain some features of numerical results, especially for the low-energy part. When $g$ is close to $1$, the features of the excitation spectra of each checkerboard model are roughly the same as those of the original square lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, and the high-energy continuum among them are discussed. In contrast to the other checkerboard structures investigated in this paper, the $3\times 3$ checkerboard model has distinctive excitation features, like a gap between a low-energy gapless branch and a gapped high-energy part exists when $g$ is small. The gapless branch in this case can be regarded as wave in N$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$el order formed by block spin in each $3\times 3$ plaquette with effective exchange interaction originated from renormalization. One finding is that the continuum also appears in this low-energy branch, which may originated from nearly deconfined process in block spin.

Spin excitation spectra of the two-dimensional S=12 Heisenberg model with a checkerboard structure

Dynamical correlation functions of the S=12 nearest-neighbor and Haldane-Shastry Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains in zero and applied fields

Kim Lefmann, Christian Rischel

We present a numerical diagonalization study of two one-dimensional $S=\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains, having nearest-neighbor and Haldane-Shastry ($\frac{1}{{r}^{2}}$) interactions, respectively. We have obtained the $T=0$ dynamical correlation function, ${S}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\alpha}}(q, \ensuremath{\omega})$, for chains of length $N=8\ensuremath{-}28$. We have studied ${S}^{\mathrm{zz}}(q, \ensuremath{\omega})$ for the Heisenberg chain in zero field, and from finite-size scaling we have obtained a limiting behavior that for large $\ensuremath{\omega}$ deviates from the conjecture proposed earlier by M\"uller et al. For both chains we describe the behavior of ${S}^{\mathrm{zz}}(q, \ensuremath{\omega})$ and ${S}^{\mathrm{xx}}(q, \ensuremath{\omega})$ for selected values of the applied field, and compare with previous work by M\"uller et al. and Talstra and Haldane. Suggestions for future finite-field neutron scattering experiments are made.

Phase Diagram and Excitation Spectrum of S = 1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

H.-J. Mikeska

We investigate ground-state and low-lying excited states of the S = 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with exchange anisotropy, single-ion anisotropy and biquadratic exchange and with free boundary conditions. We present an approximate mapping of the S = 1 model to an effective S = 1/2 chain in an external magnetic field, which can be solved exactly in several limiting cases. We obtain results for the phase diagram, correlation functions and the excitation spectrum. The transition to the Haldane phase is related to the condensation of the lowest soliton modes and the hidden order parameter of the Haldane phase is identified as transverse long-range order in the effective S = 1/2 chain.
