Solutions to the multiple-component 1/rHubbard model

Abstract

In this work we introduce a one-dimensional multiple-component Hubbard model with 1/r hopping and on-site energy U. The wave functions, the spectrum, and the thermodynamics are studied for this model in the strong-interaction limit U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}. In this limit, the system is a special example of SU(N) Luttinger liquids, exhibiting spin-charge separation in the full Hilbert space. Speculations on the physical properties of the model at finite on-site energy are also discussed.

Gutzwiller-Jastrow wave functions for the 1/rHubbard model

D. F. Wang, Q. F. Zhong, Piers Coleman

In this work, we study the wave functions of the one-dimensional 1/r Hubbard model in the strong-interaction limit U=\ensuremath{\infty}. A set of Gutzwiller-Jastrow wave functions are shown to be eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian. The entire excitation spectrum and the thermodynamics are also studied in terms of more generalized Jastrow wave functions. For the wave functions and integrability conditions at finite on-site energy, further investigations are needed.

Phase diagram and correlation functions of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in one dimension

Johannes Voit

The extended Hubbard model in one dimension is studied for half-filled bands using a continuum theory based on the Luttinger model. Interactions going beyond the Luttinger model are treated with a renormalization group. We compute correlation functions and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. It compares favorably with earlier numerical work. Specifically, we identify additional interaction terms coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom; one of them is shown to mediate the crossover from a continuous to a first-order transition from spin- to charge-density waves at a finite value of U=2V. Our approach suggests viewing the model on this line as two weakly coupled interpenetrating systems of up-spin and down-spin electrons with strong backscattering interactions favoring charge-density waves separately in each of the subsystems. A first-order transition occurring for attractive interactions is interpreted as a characteristic instability of the Luttinger liquid towards phase separation. We finally discuss a possible equivalence to some recent studies of coupled two-dimensional XY models.

Fractional exclusion statistics and thermodynamics of the Hubbard chain in the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid regime

Carlindo Vitoriano, R. R. Montenegro-Filho, Mauricio D. Coutinho-Filho

Bethe ansatz and bosonization procedures are used to describe the thermodynamics of the strong-coupled Hubbard chain in the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid (LL) regime: $J(\ensuremath{\equiv}4{t}^{2}/U)\ensuremath{\ll}{k}_{B}T\ensuremath{\ll}{E}_{F}$, where $t$ is the hopping amplitude, $U(\ensuremath{\gg}t)$ is the repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction, and ${k}_{B}T({E}_{F}\ensuremath{\sim}t)$ is the thermal (Fermi) energy. We introduce a fractional Landau LL approach, whose $U=\ensuremath{\infty}$ fixed point is exactly mapped onto an ideal gas with two species obeying the Haldane-Wu exclusion fractional statistics. This phenomenological approach sheds light on the behavior of several thermodynamic properties in the spin-incoherent LL regime: specific heat, charge compressibility, magnetic susceptibility, and Drude weight. In fact, besides the hopping (mass) renormalization, the fractional Landau LL parameters, due to quasiparticle interaction, are determined and relationships with velocities of holons and spinons are unveiled. The specific heat thus obtained is in very good agreement with previous density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model in the spin-incoherent regime. A phase diagram is provided and two thermodynamic paths to access this regime clarifies both the numerical and analytical procedures. Further, we show that the high-$T$ limit of the fractional Landau LL entropy and chemical potential exhibit the expected results of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, under the condition $U\ensuremath{\gg}{k}_{B}T$. Lastly, finite-temperature Lanczos simulations of the single-particle distribution function confirm the characteristics of the spin-incoherent regime and the high-$T$ limit observed in previous DMRG studies.

Possible exotic phases in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Anders W. Sandvik, David K Campbell

We investigate numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, including an on-site interaction U and a nearest-neighbor interaction V. We focus on the ground state phases of the model in the $V\ensuremath{\gg}U$ region, where previous studies have suggested the possibility of dominant superconducting pairing fluctuations before the system phase separates at a critical value ${V=V}_{\mathrm{PS}}.$ Using quantum Monte Carlo methods on lattices much larger than in previous Lancz\"os diagonalization studies, we determine the boundary of phase separation, the Luttinger-liquid correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ and other correlation functions in this region. We find that phase separation occurs for V significantly smaller than previously reported. In addition, for negative U, we find that a uniform state reenters from phase separation as the electron density is increased towards half filling. For $V<{V}_{\mathrm{PS}},$ our results show that superconducting fluctuations are not dominant. The system behaves asymptotically as a Luttinger liquid with ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}<1,$ but we also find strong low-energy (but gapped) charge-density fluctuations at a momentum not expected for a standard Luttinger liquid.

Thermodynamics and spin-charge separation of one-dimensional strongly repulsive three-component fermions

Peng He, Jen Yee Lee, Xi‐Wen Guan +2 more

The low temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional strongly repulsive SU(3) fermions in the presence of a magnetic field is investigated via the Yang-Yang thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The analytical free energy and magnetic properties of the model at low temperatures in a weak magnetic field are derived via the Wiener-Hopf method. It is shown that the low energy physics can be described by spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic SU(3) Heisenberg spin chain. Beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid regime, the equation of state is given in terms of the polylog function for a weak external field. The results obtained are essential for further study of quantum criticality in strongly repulsive three-component fermions.

One-dimensional Fermi liquids

Johannes Voit

We review the progress in the theory of one-dimensional (ID) Fermi liquids which has occurred over the past decade. The usual Fermi liquid theory, based on a quasi-particle picture, breaks down in one dimension because of the Peierls divergence in the particle-hole bubble, producing anomalous dimensions of operators, and because of charge-spin separation. Both are related to the importance of scattering processes transferring finite momentum. A description of the low-energy properties of gapless 1D quantum systems can be based on the exactly solvable Luttinger model which incorporates these features, and whose correlation functions can be calculated. Special properties of the eigenvalue spectrum, parameterized by one renormalized velocity and one effective coupling constant per degree of freedom, fully describe the physics of this model. Other gapless 1D models share these properties in a low-energy subspace. The concept of a "Luttinger liquid" implies that their low-energy properties are described by an effective Luttinger model, and constitutes the universality class of these quantum systems. Once the mapping on the Luttinger model is achieved, one has an asymptotically exact solution of the 1D many-body problem. Lattice models identified as Luttinger liquids include the 1D Hubbard model off half-filling, and variants such as the t-J- or the extended Hubbard model. In addition, 1D electron-phonon systems or metals with impurities can be Luttinger liquids, as well as the edge states in the quantum Hall effect.
