Spin-Peierls ground states and frustration in a multiband Peierls-Hubbard model

Abstract

We discuss the consequences of including both electron-phonon and electron-electron couplings in multiband models, focusing on numerical studies of a one-dimensional two-band model in the intermediate regime for both coupling strengths. Spin-Peierls as well as long-period, frustrated ground states are identified, reminiscent of those found in axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising models. We speculate on experimentally observable signatures of this rich phase diagram.

Phase diagram of one-dimensional electron-phonon systems. II. The molecular-crystal model

J. E. Hirsch, Eduardo Fradkin

We study the nature of the ground state of a one-dimensional electron-phonon model for molecular crystals: The phonons are assumed dispersionless and couple to the local electronic density. We consider the half-filled-band sector and discuss the stability of the Peierls-dimerized ground state as a function of the phonon frequency ($\ensuremath{\omega}$), electron-phonon coupling constant ($\ensuremath{\lambda}$), and number of components of the electron spin ($n$). First, we discuss the properties of the model in the limiting cases of zero frequency and infinite frequency. We then perform a strong coupling expansion which maps the system onto a spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor repulsion for both spinless and spin-\textonehalf{} electrons, but with different parameters in both cases. Finally, we perform a numerical study of the system using a Monte Carlo technique. We study the behavior of the order parameter and of correlation functions for various points in parameter space. We also perform a finite-size---scaling analysis of the numerical data. The conclusions of our study are the following: For the case of spinless electrons, there exists always a disordered phase for small coupling constant, and the system undergoes an infinite-order transition to a Peierls-dimerized state as the coupling constant increases beyond a critical value. The phase diagram is divided between a disordered and an ordered region by a line that connects the points ($\ensuremath{\omega}=0$, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=0$) and ($\ensuremath{\omega}=\ensuremath{\infty}$, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=\ensuremath{\infty}$). For the case of spin-\textonehalf{} electrons, the system is dimerized for arbitrary $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and $\ensuremath{\omega}$ except in the limit $\ensuremath{\omega}=\ensuremath{\infty}$.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half and quarter filling

Rahul P. Hardikar, Rudolf Torsten Clay

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling, the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes on-site pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge-density wave, while the Hubbard on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) as the electron-phonon coupling is increased, first a spin gap opens, followed by the Peierls transition. Between these two transitions, the metallic intermediate phase has a spin gap, no charge gap, and properties similar to the negative-$U$ Hubbard model. (ii) The transitions between Mott/intermediate and intermediate/Peierls states are of the Kosterlitz-Thouless form. (iii) For larger $U$, the two transitions merge at a tricritical point into a single first-order Mott/Peierls transition. In addition, we show that an intermediate phase also occurs in the quarter-filled model.

Frustrated spin-Peierls chains

Jun Zang, A. R. Bishop, D. Schmeltzer

We study the phase diagram, ground-state properties, and excitation gaps of a frustrated spin-Peierls chain, i.e., a spin-Peierls chain with both nearest-neighbor exchange ${\mathit{J}}_{1}$ and next-nearest-neighbor exchange ${\mathit{J}}_{2}$. The phase diagram is calculated using a bosonization renormalization-group method. We propose a bond-operator mean-field approximation to calculate the ground-state properties and excitation gaps.

Intermediate Phase of the One Dimensional Half-Filled Hubbard-Holstein Model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Rahul P. Hardikar

We present a numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard on-site interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or Mott phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic phase exists between the Peierls and Mott phases. We confirm the intermediate phase, and show that the Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K(rho) >1 in this region, indicating dominant superconducting pair correlations. We explore the full phase diagram as a function of Hubbard U, phonon coupling constant, and phonon frequency.

Weak-coupling phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with correlated-hopping interaction

G. I. Japaridze, A. P. Kampf

A one-dimensional model of interacting electrons with on-site U, nearest-neighbor V, and correlated-hopping interaction ${T}^{*}$ is studied at half filling using the continuum-limit field theory approach. The ground-state phase diagram is obtained for a wide range of coupling constants. In addition to the insulating spin- and charge-density wave phases for large U and V, respectively, we identify bond-located ordered phases corresponding to an enhanced Peierls instability in the system for ${T}^{*}>0, |U\ensuremath{-}2V|<{8T}^{*}/\ensuremath{\pi}$ and to a staggered magnetization located on bonds between sites for ${T}^{*}<0, |U\ensuremath{-}2V|<8|{T}^{*}|/\ensuremath{\pi}.$ The general ground-state phase diagram including insulating, metallic, and superconducting phases is discussed.

Exploring the magnetic phases in the one-band Hubbard model: Impact of long-range hopping

Sudip Mandal, Sandip Halder, Kalpataru Pradhan

Correlated electron systems with competing interactions provide a valuable platform for examining exotic magnetic phases. Theoretical models often focus on nearest-neighbor interactions, although long-range interactions can have a considerable impact on the behavior of the system, creating distinct and complicated magnetic phases. We investigate the consequences of competing interactions in a half-filled one-band Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice, incorporating hopping processes up to third-nearest-neighbors, to explore the underlying magnetotransport properties. Our magnetic phase diagrams at low temperatures, obtained using semiclassical Monte Carlo analysis, reveal that the long-range interactions can disrupt one form of magnetic phase while creating a new type of magnetic order. For the nonperturbative regime (on-site Hubbard repulsive strength $U\ensuremath{\sim}$ bandwidth), the C-type antiferromagnetic ground state is preferred over the G-type antiferromagnetic phase when the interaction between second-nearest-neighbor sites becomes significant relative to the nearest-neighbor interactions. However, interactions beyond the second-nearest-neighbors are required to stabilize the A-type antiferromagnetic ground state. Remarkably, at low temperatures, a highly correlated paramagnetic insulating phase develops at the intersection between the antiferromagnetic phases, which might promote a three-dimensional spin-liquid state.
