Entanglement Entropy of One-dimensional Gapped Spin Chains

Abstract

We investigate the entanglement entropy (EE) of gapped S=1 and $S=1/2$ spin chains with dimerization. We find that the effective boundary degrees of freedom as edge states contribute significantly to the EE. For the $S=1/2$ dimerized Heisenberg chain, the EE of the sufficiently long chain is essentially explained by the localized $S=1/2$ effective spins on the boundaries. As for S=1, the effective spins are also $S=1/2$ causing a Kennedy triplet that yields a lower bound for the EE. In this case, the residual entanglement reduces substantially by a continuous deformation of the Heisenberg model to that of the AKLT Hamiltonian.

Entanglement in low dimensional systems

Raul A. Santos

In the ground state of gapped systems, the entanglement entropy of a subsystem A scales with the length of the boundary of A. This observation suggests that the entanglement properties of the sub- system can be described in terms of degrees of freedom living in the boundary of A. We will discuss the the connection between en- tanglement properties and effective boundary descriptions in spin systems in one and two dimensions. In one dimension we present analytic results for the spin S = 1, Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) ground state entanglement, characterized by negativity and entanglement spectrum. We also discuss a generalization of the AKLT model, based on the quantum group Uq (sl(2)) for gen- eral integer spin S. In two dimensions, we study two spin systems whose ground state can be written in terms of tensor product states of bond dimension two, the AKLT model in the hexagonal lattice and the Ising projected entangled pair state (Ising PEPS) in the square lattice. We show how the reduced density matrix of a parti- tion is associated with a thermal state of a one dimensional model along the boundary of that partition. We also present arguments supporting this correspondence for arbitrary gapped systems. Fi- nally we discuss the behavior of this boundary theory when the original two dimensional model is tuned through a quantum phase transition,126 pages

Residual entropy and spin gap in a one-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet

Matthieu Mambrini, Julien Trébosc, Frédéric Mila

We show that the low-energy sector of the $S=1/2$, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a one-dimensional lattice of coupled tetrahedra consists of ${2}^{N}$ replica of the spectrum of the dimerized Heisenberg chain, where N is the number of tetrahedra. This provides a proof of the following properties: (i) there is a residual ground-state entropy per spin equal to $(1/4)\mathrm{ln}2$; (ii) there is a singlet-triplet gap as long as the coupling between the tetrahedra is smaller than the internal one. These properties are compared to available results on the pyrochlore lattice.

Sublattice entanglement and quantum phase transitions in antiferromagnetic spin chains

Yan Chen, Paolo Zanardi A, Z D Wang +1 more

Entanglement of the ground states in the S = 1/2 XXZ chain, dimerized Heisenberg spin chain, two-leg spin ladders as well as S = 1 anisotropic Haldane chain is analysed using the entanglement entropy between a selected sublattice of spins and the rest of the system. In particular, we reveal that quantum phase transition points/boundaries may be identified based on the analysis on the local extreme of this sublattice entanglement entropy, which is illustrated to be superior over the concurrence scenario and may enable us to explore quantum phase transitions in many other systems including higher dimensional ones.

Quantum phases of dimerized and frustrated Heisenberg spin chains with s = 1/2, 1 and 3/2: an entanglement entropy and fidelity study

V. M. L. Durga Prasad Goli, Shaon Sahoo, S. Ramasesha +1 more

We study here different regions in phase diagrams of the spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-3/2 one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg systems with frustration (next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2) and dimerization (δ). In particular, we analyze the behaviors of the bipartite entanglement entropy and fidelity at the gapless to gapped phase transitions and across the lines separating different phases in the J2-δ plane. All the calculations in this work are based on numerical exact diagonalizations of finite systems.

Entanglement entropy and spectra of the one-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model

Rex Lundgren, Victor Chua, Gregory A. Fiete

We study the quantum entanglement of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the one-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model, which includes both gapless and gapped phases, using analytical techniques and exact diagonalization with up to 16 sites. We compute the entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectra using a variety of partitions or ``cuts'' of the Hilbert space, including two distinct real-space cuts and a momentum-space cut. Our results show that the Kugel-Khomski model possesses a number of new features not previously encountered in studies of the entanglement spectra. Notably, we find robust gaps in the entanglement spectra for both gapped and gapless phases with the orbital partition, and show these are not connected to each other. The counting of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues shows that the ``virtual edge'' picture, which equates the low-energy Hamiltonian of a virtual edge, here one gapless leg of a two-leg ladder, to the ``low-energy'' entanglement Hamiltonian, breaks down for this model, even though the equivalence has been shown to hold for a similar cut in a large class of closely related models. In addition, we show that a momentum space cut in the gapless phase leads to qualitative differences in the entanglement spectrum when compared with the same cut in the gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg spin chain. We emphasize the new information content in the entanglement spectra compared to the entanglement entropy, and using quantum entanglement, we present a refined phase diagram of the model. Using analytical arguments, exploiting various symmetries of the model, and applying arguments of adiabatic continuity from two exactly solvable points of the model, we are also able to prove several results regarding the structure of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues.

Exact results for the bipartite entanglement entropy of the AKLT spin-1 chain

Scott D Geraedts, Erik Schwartz Sørensen

We study the bipartite entanglement between a subsystem of size l and the rest of the system of total size L as it occurs in a spin-1 Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki (AKLT) chain subject to open boundary conditions. In this case, the ground-state manifold is four-fold degenerate and there is strong dependence on the parity of the number of spins, L . We present exact analytical results for the von Neumann entanglement entropy, as a function of both the size of the subsystem, l , and the total system size, L , for all four degenerate ground states for both odd and even L . In the large l , L limits the entanglement entropy approaches ln (2) for the S z T = ±1 while it approaches twice that value, 2ln (2), for the S z T = 0 states. In all cases, it is found that this constant is approached exponentially fast defining a length scale ξ = 1/ln (3) equal to the known bulk correlation length.
