Response of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states to magnetic and non-magnetic impurities

Abstract

Using exact diagonalization we examine the response of several most prominent fractional quantum Hall states to a single local impurity. The 2/3 singlet state is found to be more inert than the polarized one in spite of its smaller incompressibility gap. Based on its spin-spin correlation functions we interpret it as a liquid of electron pairs with opposite spin. A comparison of different types of impurities, non-magnetic and magnetic, is presented.

Spin in fractional quantum Hall systems

K. Výborný

A system at filling factor 2/3 could be a candidate for a quantum Hall ferromagnet at integer filling factor of composite fermions. Using exact diagonalization with electrons on a torus we study the transition from the singlet ground state to the polarized ground state at this filling and look for signatures of quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Differences between the fractional and corresponding integer systems are emphasised. Most interestingly, we find around the transition a low excited half-polarized state which might become the ground state in the thermodynamical limit. We study its structure and compare it to the singlet and polarized ground states. A new interpretation of the singlet state is suggested and comparison of the filling factors 2/3 and 2/5 is presented. Adding magnetic inhomogeneities into the system we investigate the stability of all the three involved states and the tendency to build up domains like in conventional ferromagnets.

Integral and fractional quantum Hall Ising ferromagnets

We compare quantum Hall systems at filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ to $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{2}{3}$ and $\frac{2}{5}$, corresponding to the exact filling of two lowest electron or composite fermion (CF) Landau levels. The two fractional states are examples of CF liquids with spin dynamics. There is a close analogy between the ferromagnetic (spin polarization $P=1$) and paramagnetic $(P=0)$ incompressible ground states that occur in all three systems in the limits of large and small Zeeman spin splitting. However, the excitation spectra are different. At $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$, we find spin domains at half-polarization $(P=\frac{1}{2})$, while antiferromagnetic order seems most favorable in the CF systems. The transition between $P=0$ and 1, as seen when, e.g., the magnetic field is tilted, is also studied by exact diagonalization in toroidal and spherical geometries. The essential role of an effective CF-CF interaction is discussed, and the experimentally observed incompressible half-polarized state is found in some models.

Fractionally charged impurity states of a fractional quantum Hall system

Kelly R Patton, Michael R Geller

The single-particle spectral function for an incompressible fractional quantum Hall state in the presence of a scalar short-ranged attractive impurity potential is calculated via exact diagonalization within the spherical geometry. In contrast to the noninteracting case, where only a single bound state below the lowest Landau level forms, electron–electron interactions strongly renormalize the impurity potential, effectively giving it a finite range, which can support many quasi-bound states (long-lived resonances). Averaging the spectral weights of the quasi-bound states and extrapolating to the thermodynamic limit, for filling factor ν = 1/3 we find evidence consistent with localized fractionally charged e /3 quasi-particles. For ν = 2/5, the results are slightly more ambiguous, due to finite size effects and possible bunching of Laughlin-quasi-particles.

Second generation of incompressible quantum liquids in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Arkadiusz Wójs

We study 'second generation' of fractional quantum Hall states which contain a partially filled composite fermion (CF) Landau level (LL). We explain the role of CF-CF interaction in the incompressibility of the underlying quantum electron liquid. In particular, using exact diagonalization on a Haldane sphere, we determine two- and three-body CF correlation functions for these liquids and show that the CFs form a paired state (instead of a Laughlin liquid) when filling v = 1/3 of their second LL. At v = 1/2 we show that the CFs group into even larger clusters rather than form a Moore—Read paired state. We also address the problem of spin polarization of interacting CFs and predict transition to the partially unpolarized ground state in sufficiently narrow quantum wells and/or weak magnetic fields.

SPIN STRUCTURES IN INHOMOGENEOUS FRACTIONAL QUANTUM HALL SYSTEMS

Karel Výborný, Daniela Pfannkuche

Transitions between spin polarized and spin singlet incompressible ground state of quantum Hall systems at filling factor 2/3 are studied by means of exact diagonalization with eight electrons. We observe a stable exactly half–polarized state becoming the absolute ground state around the transition point. This might be a candidate for the anomaly observed during the transition in optical experiments. The state reacts strongly to magnetic inhomogeneities but it prefers stripe–like spin structures to formation of domains.

Theory of the spin liquid state of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Vadim Kalmeyer, R. B. Laughlin

We propose that the disordered state of a two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is physically equivalent to the incompressible liquid state of the fractional quantum Hall system. The fractional quantum Hall state for bosons is shown to be an exact spin singlet and to possess a low variational energy for the near-neighbor Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice. Variational wave functions for neutral spin-1/2 excitations are constructed and shown to form an exact spin doublet. Variational energies of these states are calculated, and their spin density profiles are determined. We find that a localized spin-1/2 quaisparticle has a size comparable to a lattice bond length and an excitation energy \ensuremath{\Delta}=1.3J. The energy-momentum dispersion of quasiparticles and spin-1 collective modes, obtained variationally, supports the hypothesis that the spin liquid state has a finite energy gap. The 1/2 fractional statistics exhibited by the quasiparticle excitations is explicitly demonstrated.
