Incomplete pure dephasing of N -qubit entangled W states

Abstract

We consider qubits in a linear arrangement coupled to a bosonic field which acts as a quantum heat bath and causes decoherence. By taking the spatial separation of the qubits explicitly into account, the reduced qubit dynamics acquires an additional non-Markovian element. We investigate the exact time evolution of an entangled many-qubit W state, which for vanishing qubit separation remains robust under pure dephasing. For finite separation, by contrast, the dynamics is no longer decoherence-free. On the other hand, spatial noise correlations may prevent complete dephasing. While a standard Bloch-Redfield master equation fails to describe this behavior even qualitatively, we propose instead a widely applicable causal master equation. Here we employ it to identify and characterize decoherence-poor subspaces. Consequences for quantum error correction are discussed.

Limitation of entanglement due to spatial qubit separation

We consider spatially separated qubits coupled to a thermal bosonic field that causes pure dephasing. Our focus is on the entanglement of two Bell states which for vanishing separation are known as robust and fragile entangled states. The reduced two-qubit dynamics is solved exactly and explicitly. Our results allow us to gain information about the robustness of two-qubit decoherence-free subspaces with respect to physical parameters such as temperature, qubit-bath coupling strength and spatial separation of the qubits. Moreover, we clarify the relation between single-qubit coherence and two-qubit entanglement and identify parameter regimes in which the terms robust and fragile are no longer appropriate.

Dynamics of quantum resources under noisy spatial deformation of identical particles

A. Ferrara, Farzam Nosrati, Andrea Smirne +2 more

We present a microscopic derivation of a master equation for two bosonic qubits tunneling between spatially separated modes under local dephasing, described by a Lorentzian spectrum. The resulting time-local equation reveals intrinsic non-Markovian features. When the bath central frequency is resonant with the tunneling amplitude, dephasing can drive the system toward a correlated steady state that sustains coherence and entanglement, as opposed to complete decoherence predicted by white noise models. These results provide a rigorous foundation for pure dephasing in bosonic tunneling systems and demonstrate how structured noise can actively generate steady-state quantum correlations.

Tunneling of bosonic qubits under local dephasing through a microscopic approach

Alberto Ferrara, Farzam Nosrati, Andrea Smirne +2 more

We present a microscopic derivation of a master equation for two-component bosons (bosonic qubits) which tunnel between spatially separated modes under local dephasing noise. Starting from the full system-bath Hamiltonian with Lorentzian coupling distributions, we analytically obtain a time-local master equation whose structure reveals intrinsic non-Markovian features and recovers the standard phenomenological dephasing model in the short-time limit. Comparison with exact pseudomode simulations confirms its validity beyond weak-coupling and Markovian regimes. We identify a resonance condition between tunneling and bath frequencies for which dephasing drives the system toward correlated steady states, stabilizing coherence and entanglement instead of suppressing them. These results establish a rigorous microscopic foundation for dephasing models in bosonic tunneling systems and reveal a noise-induced mechanism for steady-state entanglement.

Qubit-environment entanglement in pure dephasing dynamics for mixed initial states

Małgorzata Strzałka, Nico Peters, Laura Ares +2 more

Decoherence of qubits is one main limitation in quantum information processing, where the qubits themselves can be mixed because of decoherence and additional decoherence may generated through interactions with a bath. Here, we present a complete study of qubit-environment entanglement in the case of interactions that lead to pure dephasing of the qubit by allowing the initial state of the qubit to be mixed, exceeding previous restrictions. We find that the criteria for separability that hold for pure initial states of the qubit are reduced to witness status. Yet, the evolution of the witnesses reflects the array of features that entanglement can exhibit in the mixed case but are forbidden in the pure-qubit case. Most notably, this includes sudden birth of entanglement as the initial phase of the evolution is typically separable. Moreover, there is a stark numerical advantage to the study of entanglement for large environments when using the witness rather than the traditional measures available. We include the study of entanglement generated between a spin qubit and a sparse spin environment to illustrate the peculiarities of the evolution of entanglement in this case, as well as to emphasize the level of reliability of the entanglement witness.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Qubit Systems: Quantum-State Diffusion Equations Versus Master Equations

Yusui Chen, Ting Yu

In this review we discuss recent progress in the theory of open quantum systems based on non-MarkovianNon-Markovian quantum state diffusionQuantum state diffusion equation and master equationsMaster equation. In particular, we show that an exact master equation for an open quantum system consisting of a few qubits can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation. The exact master equation arises naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit systems collectively interacting with a colored noise. We illustrate our general theoretical formalism by the explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This exact qubit master equation accurately characterizes the time evolution of the qubit system in various parameter domains, and paves the way for investigation of the memory effect of an open quantum system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.
