Binding of Holons and Spinons in the One-Dimensional Anisotropic t−J Model

Abstract

We study the binding of a holon and a spinon in the one-dimensional anisotropic t-J model using a Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, exact diagonalization, and density matrix renormalization group methods on chains of up to 128 sites. We find that holon-spinon binding changes dramatically as a function of anisotropy parameter alpha=J( perpendicular)/J(z): it evolves from an exactly deducible impuritylike result in the Ising limit to an exponentially shallow bound state near the isotropic case. A remarkable agreement between the theory and numerical results suggests that such a change is controlled by the corresponding evolution of the spinon energy spectrum.

Spinon-holon interactions in an anisotropic t−J chain: A comprehensive study

Jurij Šmakov, A. L. Chernyshev, Steven R. White

We consider a generalization of the one-dimensional $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model with anisotropic spin-spin interactions. We show that the anisotropy leads to an effective attractive interaction between the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in a localized bound state. Detailed quantitative analytic predictions for the dependence of the binding energy on the anisotropy are presented and are verified by precise numerical simulations. The binding energy is found to interpolate smoothly between a finite value in the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{z}$ limit and zero in the isotropic limit, going to zero exponentially in the vicinity of the latter. We identify changes in spinon dispersion as the primary factor for this nontrivial behavior.

Bound states of spinons in spatially anisotropic frustrated XXZ models in the Ising limit

Masanori Kohno

Dynamical properties of frustrated XXZ models in the Ising limit on spatially anisotropic two-dimensional lattices are investigated by a weak-coupling approach from the one-dimensional limit. Restricting the Hilbert space to that spanned by exact eigenstates of XXZ chains in the Ising limit, we calculate dynamical structure factor 5 -+ (k,ω) in spatially anisotropic two-dimensional systems. As in the case of frustrated Heisenberg models [M.Kohno, et al. , Nat. Phys. 3, 790 (2007)], spinons form bound states through hopping process between chains. We calculate the density-density correlation function of spinons in the Ising limit, and show that spinons in the bound state hop together as a pair, although those in a continuous spectrum behave almost independently. We discuss possible implications of the present results on fractionalization of bosonic and fermionic particles in spatially anisotropic frustrated systems with strong repulsion.

Anderson-like impurity in the one-dimensional t - J model: Formation of local states and magnetic behavior

Holger Frahm, Guillaume Palacios

We consider an integrable model describing an Anderson-like impurity coupled to an open $t$-$J$ chain. Both the hybridization (i.e., its coupling to bulk chain) and the local spectrum can be controlled without breaking the integrability of the model. As the hybridization is varied, holon and spinon bound states appear in the many body ground state. Based on the exact solution we study the state of the impurity and its contribution to thermodynamic quantities as a function of an applied magnetic field. Kondo behavior in the magnetic response of the impurity can be observed provided that its parameters have been adjusted properly to the energy scales of the holon and spinon excitations of the one-dimensional bulk.

Quasiparticle collapsing in an anisotropic t−J ladder

Zheng Zhu, Zheng-Yu Weng

Quasiparticle collapsing is a central issue in the study of strongly correlated electron systems. In the one-dimensional case, the quasiparticle collapsing in a form of spin-charge separation has been well established, but the problem remains elusive in dimensions higher than one. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, we show that in an anisotropic two-leg $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladder, an injected single hole behaves like a well-defined quasiparticle in the strong rung limit but undergoes a ``phase transition'' with the effective mass diverging at a quantum critical point (QCP) towards the isotropic limit. After the transition, the quasiparticle collapses into a loosely bound object of a charge (holon) and a spin-1/2 (spinon) accompanied by an unscreened phase string as well as a substantially enhanced binding energy between two doped holes. A phase diagram of multileg ladders is further obtained, which extrapolates the QCP towards the two-dimensional limit. The underlying mechanism generic for any dimensions is also discussed.

Spinon-Holon Attraction in the Supersymmetric t−J Model with 1/r2 Interaction

Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Domenico Giuliano, R. B. Laughlin

We derive the coordinate representation of the one-spinon one-holon wave function for the supersymmetric t-J model with 1/r(2) interaction. This result allows us to show that a spinon and a holon attract each other at short distance. The attraction gets stronger as the size of the system is increased and, in the thermodynamic limit, it is responsible for the square-root singularity in the hole spectral function [Y. Kato, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5402 (1998)].

Charge dynamics in half-filled Hubbard chains with finite on-site interaction

Rodrigo G. Pereira, Karlo Penc, Steven R. White +2 more

We study the charge dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with finite on-site repulsion $U$ at half-filling. Numerical results from the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group are analyzed by comparison with the exact spectrum of the model. The evolution of the line shape as a function of $U$ is explained in terms of a relative transfer of spectral weight between the two-holon continuum that dominates in the limit $U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ and a subset of the two-holon-two-spinon continuum that reconstructs the electron-hole continuum in the limit $U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. Power-law singularities along boundary lines of the spectrum are described by effective impurity models that are explicitly invariant under spin and $\ensuremath{\eta}$-spin $\text{SU}(2)$ rotations. The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is reflected in a discontinuous change of the exponents of edge singularities at $U=0$. The sharp feature observed in the spectrum for momenta near the zone boundary is attributed to a van Hove singularity that persists as a consequence of integrability.
