Abstract

We show that the effective action of the quantum spherical spin glass is invariant under a generalized form of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin(BRST) supersymmetry. The Ward identities associated to this invariance indicate that the spin glass order parameter must vanish, and as a result the annealed average is exact in this model. We present new results for for the free energy, entropy and specific heat. Due to quantum effects the entropy remains finite and the specific het vanishes at zero temperature. results for the phase diagram coincide with those obtained by different formalisms. At zero temperature we derive the scaling behaviour with frequency of the dynamical susceptibility.

Classical and quantum spherical models of spin-glasses: A complete treatment of statistics and dynamics

Prabodh Shukla, Surjit Singh

A generalization of the usual spherical model of spin-glasses is introduced, and its static and dynamic behavior is fully studied. The generalized model is given the name quantum spherical model to contrast it with the usual model which we call the classical spherical model. The results of the quantum model reduce to those of the classical model in appropriate limits. However, the quantum model shows some new and interesting features. The equilibrium entropy of spin-glasses which is negative at sufficiently low temperatures in the classical model is found positive in the quantum version, and it vanishes at zero temperature. The dynamic properties of quantum and classical spherical models are similar except in the infinite time limit when different equilibrium behavior is obtained as expected. The magnetization, order-parameter, and on-site correlations are found to decay exponentially above the transition temperature, and algebraically at and below it in the long-time limit. A closed-form expression for the dynamic susceptibility valid at all temperatures is also obtained. The algebraic decay predicted by our model may serve as a model form of behavior in the interpretation of experimental relaxation data on spin-glasses.

Supersymmetric quantum spherical spins

Abstract In this work we investigate properties of a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical model from an off-shell formulation directly in the superspace. This is convenient to safely handle the constraint structure of the model in a way compatible with supersymmetry. The model is parametrized by an interaction energy, , which governs the interactions between the superfields of different sites. We briefly discuss some consequences when corresponds to the case of first-neighbor interactions. After computing the partition function via saddle point method for a generic interaction, , we focus in the mean-field version, which reveals an interesting critical behavior. In fact, the mean-field supersymmetric model exhibits a quantum phase transition without breaking supersymmetry at zero temperature, as well as a phase transition at finite temperature with broken supersymmetry. We compute critical exponents of the usual magnetization and susceptibility in both cases of zero and finite temperature. Concerning the susceptibility, there are two regimes in the case of finite temperature characterized by distinct critical exponents. The entropy is well behaved at low temperature, vanishing as .

The short-range-interaction -random-bond spherical quantum spin glass on the Bethe lattice: dynamic correlations and thermodynamic functions

T. K. Kopeć, Klaus D. Usadel

We consider the short-range-interaction disordered quantum spherical model with a symmetrical binary -bond distribution on the Bethe lattice (with coordination number z ). The system exhibits a quantum phase transition separating the spin-glass and disordered phases, where the quantum effects are regulated by a parameter describing the kinetic energy. The model admits, in the spherical limit, an exact solution both in the spin-glass phase and in the disordered phase. The quantum dynamics is examined via various correlation functions on the infinite tree, which are evaluated in closed form. A closed-form solution for the averaged free energy has been obtained, and various thermodynamic functions are explicitly derived in the form of low-temperature expansions.

Search of the ground state(s) of spin glasses and quantum annealing

Sudip Mukherjee

We review our earlier studies on the order parameter distribution of the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. Through Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the behavior of the order parameter distribution at finite temperatures. The zero temperature study of the spin glass order parameter distribution is made by the exact diagonalization method. We find in low-temperature (high-transverse-field) spin glass region, the tail (extended up to zero value of order parameter) and width of the order parameter distribution become zero in thermodynamic limit. Such observations clearly suggest the existence of a low-temperature (high-transverse-field) ergodic region. We also find in high-temperature (low-transverse-field) spin glass phase the order parameter distribution has nonzero value for all values of the order parameter even in infinite system size limit, which essentially indicates the nonergodic behavior of the system. We study the annealing dynamics by the paths which pass through both ergodic and nonergodic spin glass regions. We find the average annealing time becomes system size independent for the paths which pass through the quantum-fluctuation-dominated ergodic spin glass region. In contrast to that, the annealing time becomes strongly system size dependent for annealing down through the classical-fluctuation-dominated nonergodic spin glass region. We investigate the behavior of the spin autocorrelation in the spin glass phase. We observe that the decay rate of autocorrelation towards its equilibrium value is much faster in the ergodic region with respect to the nonergodic region of the spin glass phase.

Finite-size scaling and bulk critical behavior of a quantum spherical model with a long-range interaction: entropy, internal energy and specific heat

N P Nedev, Ekaterina S. Pisanova

Abstract The entropy, the internal energy and the specific heat of a d-dimensional quantum spherical model with a long-range interaction, the decreasing of which is controlled by a parameter σ (0 < σ ≤ 2), are studied close to its quantum critical point in the context of the finite-size scaling (FSS) theory for d = σ. The obtained specific heat critical exponent σ does not depend on σ and satisfies the quantum hyperscaling relation. Based on the derived FSS forms and asymptotes of the universal scaling functions of the considered quantities, the leading temperature dependencies of the entropy, the internal energy and the specific heat are obtained in both the renormalized classical and the quantum disordered regions of the phase diagram. It has been shown that when the temperature T → +0, the entropy and the specific heat in the renormalized classical region tend to zero as powers of T, while in the quantum disordered region they tend to zero exponentially.
