Abstract

We introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a threefold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation $\overline{\mathbf{3}}$ of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under representation 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin representations 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement, and a Haldane gap in the excitation spectrum.

Valence bond solids for SU ( n ) spin chains: Exact models, spinon confinement, and the Haldane gap

Martin Greiter, Stephan Rachel

To begin with, we introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: First is a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a threefold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation $\overline{\mathbf{3}}$ of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under representation 3. Second is a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin representations 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and, hence, a Haldane gap in the excitation spectrum. We generalize some of our models to $\mathrm{SU}(n)$. Finally, we use the emerging rules for the construction of valence bond solid states to argue that models of antiferromagnetic chains of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ spins, in general, possess a Haldane gap if the spins transform under a representation corresponding to a Young tableau consisting of a number of boxes $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ which is divisible by $n$. If $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and $n$ have no common divisor, the spin chain will support deconfined spinons and not exhibit a Haldane gap. If $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and $n$ have a common divisor different from $n$, it will depend on the specifics of the model including the range of the interaction.

Spinon confinement and the Haldane gap in SU ( n ) spin chains

Stephan Rachel, Ronny Thomale, M. Führinger +2 more

We use extensive density-matrix renormalization-group calculations to show that a classification of $\text{SU}(n)$ spin chains with regard to the existence of spinon confinement and hence a Haldane gap obtained previously for valence bond solid models applies to $\text{SU}(n)$ Heisenberg chains as well. In particular, we observe spinon confinement due to a next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the SU(4) representation 10 chain.

Quantum trimer models and topological SU(3) spin liquids on the kagome lattice

Sven Jandura, Mohsin Iqbal, Norbert Schuch

We construct and study quantum trimer models and resonating SU(3)-singlet models on the kagome lattice, which generalize quantum dimer models and the resonating valence bond wave functions to a trimer and SU(3) setting. We demonstrate that these models carry a Z 3 symmetry which originates in the structure of trimers and the SU(3) representation theory, and which becomes the only symmetry under renormalization.Based on this, we construct simple and exact parent Hamiltonians for the model which exhibit a topological ninefold degenerate ground space.A combination of analytical reasoning and numerical analysis reveals that the quantum order ultimately displayed by the model depends on the relative weight assigned to different types of trimers-it can display either Z 3 topological order or form a symmetry-broken trimer crystal, and in addition possesses a point with an enhanced U(1) symmetry and critical behavior. Our results accordingly hold for the SU(3) model, where the two natural choices for trimer weights give rise to either a topological spin liquid or a system with symmetry-broken order, respectively. Our work thus demonstrates the suitability of resonating trimer and SU(3)-singlet ansatzes to model SU(3) topological spin liquids on the kagome lattice.

Topologically distinct classes of valence-bond solid states with their parent Hamiltonians

Hong-Hao Tu, Guang-Ming Zhang, Tao Xiang +2 more

We present a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally invariant valence-bond solid states with a built-in Lie group $G$ and derive their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence-bond solid states are their unique ground states. For quantum integer-spin-$S$ chains, we discuss two topologically distinct classes of valence-bond solid states: one consists of two virtual $SU(2)$ spin-$J$ variables in each site and another is formed by using two $SO(2S+1)$ spinors. Among them, a spin-1 fermionic valence-bond solid state, its parent Hamiltonian, and its properties are discussed in detail. Moreover, two types of valence-bond solid states with $SO(5)$ symmetries are further generalized and their respective properties are analyzed as well.

Family of spin- S chain representations of SU(2) k Wess-Zumino-Witten models

Ronny Thomale, Stephan Rachel, Peter Schmitteckert +1 more

We investigate a family of spin-$S$ chain Hamiltonians recently introduced by one of us [Greiter, Mapping of Parent Hamiltonians, Springer Tracts in Modern Physics, Vol. 244 (Springer, Berlin, 2011)]. For $S=1/2$, it corresponds to the Haldane-Shastry model. For general spin $S$, we find indication that the low-energy theory of these spin chains is described by the SU(2)${}_{k}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model with coupling $k=2S$. In particular, we investigate the $S=1$ model whose ground state is given by a Pfaffian for even number of sites $N$. We reconcile aspects of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian for arbitrary $N$ with trial states obtained by Schwinger projection of two Haldane-Shastry chains.
