Coherent spectral weights of Gutzwiller-projected superconductors

Abstract

We analyze the electronic Green’s functions in the superconducting ground state of the t‐J model using Gutzwiller‐projected wave functions, and compare them to the conventional BCS form. Some of the properties of the BCS state are preserved by the projection: the total spectral weight is continuous around the quasiparticle node and approximately constant along the Fermi surface. On the other hand, the overall spectral weight is reduced by the projection with a momentum‐dependent renormalization, and the projection produces electron‐hole asymmetry in renormalization of the electron and hole spectral weights. The latter asymmetry leads to the bending of the effective Fermi surface which we define as the locus of equal electron and hole spectral weight.

Strong correlation effects on thed-wave superconductor- spectral weight analysis by variational wave functions

Chung-Pin Chou, Ting-Kuo Lee, Chang-Ming Ho

We examine the strong correlation effects of the d-wave superconducting state by including the Gutzwiller projection for no electron double occupancy at each lattice site. The spectral weights (SW's) for adding and removing an electon on the projected superconducting state, the ground state of the 2-dimensional t-t'-t-J model with moderate doped holes describing the high Tc cuprates, are studied numerically on finite lattices and compared with the observation made by low-temperature tunneling (particle asymmetry of tunneling conductance) and angle-resolved photoemission (SW transfer from the projected Fermi liquid tate) spectoscopies. The contast with the dwave case without projection is alo presented.

Spectral weights, d -wave pairing amplitudes, and particle-hole tunneling asymmetry of a strongly correlated superconductor

Chung-Pin Chou, T. K. Lee, Chang-Ming Ho

The spectral weights (SW's) for adding and removing an electron of the Gutzwiller projected $d$-wave superconducting (SC) state of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$-type models are studied numerically on finite lattices. We restrict the study to the uniform system but exactly treat the strong correlation between electrons, we show that the product of weights is equal to the pairing amplitude squared, the same as in the weakly coupled case. In addition, we derive a rigorous relation of SW with doping in the electron doped system and obtain particle-hole asymmetry of the conductance-proportional quantity within the SC gap energy and, also, the anticorrelation between gap sizes and peak heights observed in tunneling spectroscopy on high ${T}_{c}$ cuprates.

Variational Monte Carlo study of the current carried by a quasiparticle

Cody P. Nave, Dmitri A. Ivanov, Patrick A. Lee

With the use of Gutzwiller-projected variational states, we study the renormalization of the current carried by the quasiparticles in high-temperature superconductors and of the quasiparticle spectral weight. The renormalization coefficients are computed by the variational Monte Carlo technique, under the assumption that quasiparticle excitations may be described by Gutzwiller-projected BCS quasiparticles. We find that the current renormalization coefficient decreases with decreasing doping and tends to zero at zero doping. The quasiparticle spectral weight ${Z}_{+}$ for adding an electron shows an interesting structure in $\mathbf{k}$ space, which corresponds to a depression of the occupation number ${n}_{\mathbf{k}}$ just outside the Fermi surface. The perturbative corrections to those quantities in the Hubbard model are also discussed.

Spectral functions, Fermi surface, and pseudogap in the t−J model

Peter Prelovšek, A. Ramšak

Spectral functions within the generalized $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model as relevant to cuprates are analyzed using the method of equations of motion for projected fermion operators. In the evaluation of the self-energy a decoupling of spin and single-particle fluctuations is performed. It is shown that in an undoped antiferromagnet the method reproduces the self-consistent Born approximation. For finite doping with short-range antiferromagnetic order the approximation evolves into a paramagnon contribution which retains a large incoherent contribution in the hole part of the spectral function as well as the hole-pocket-like Fermi surface at low doping. On the other hand, the contribution of longer-range spin fluctuations, with the coupling mostly determined predominantly by J and next-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}},$ is essential for the emergence of the pseudogap. The latter shows, at low doping in the effective truncation of the large Fermi surface, a reduced electron density of states and at the same time a quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi level.

Electronic Structure of Strongly Correlated d -Wave Superconductors

Bernhard Edegger, V. N. Muthukumar, Claudius Gros +1 more

We study the electronic structure of a strongly correlated d-wave superconducting state. Combining a renormalized mean field theory with direct calculation of matrix elements, we obtain explicit analytical results for the nodal Fermi velocity upsilon(F), the Fermi wave vector k(F), and the momentum distribution n(k) as a function of hole doping in a Gutzwiller projected d-wave superconductor. We calculate the energy dispersion E(k) and spectral weight of the Gutzwiller-Bogoliubov quasiparticles and find that the spectral weight associated with the quasiparticle excitation at the antinodal point shows a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of doping. Results are compared to angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the high-temperature superconductors.
