Observation of Faraday Waves in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract

Faraday waves in a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate are created. It is shown that periodically modulating the transverse confinement, and thus the nonlinear interactions in the BEC, excites small amplitude longitudinal oscillations through a parametric resonance. It is also demonstrated that even without the presence of a continuous drive, an initial transverse breathing mode excitation of the condensate leads to spontaneous pattern formation in the longitudinal direction. Finally, the effects of strongly driving the transverse breathing mode with large amplitude are investigated. In this case, impact-oscillator behavior and intriguing nonlinear dynamics, including the gradual emergence of multiple longitudinal modes, are observed.

Faraday waves in Bose-Einstein condensates

Alexandru I. Nicolin, R. Carretero-González, P. G. Kevrekidis

Motivated by recent experiments on Faraday waves in Bose-Einstein condensates we investigate both analytically and numerically the dynamics of cigar-shaped Bose-condensed gases subject to periodic modulation of the strength of the transverse confinement. We offer a fully analytical explanation of the observed parametric resonance, based on a Mathieu-type analysis of the non-polynomial Schr\"odinger equation. The theoretical prediction for the pattern periodicity versus the driving frequency is directly compared to the experimental data, yielding good qualitative and quantitative agreement between the two. These results are corroborated by direct numerical simulations of both the one-dimensional non-polynomial Schr\"odinger equation and of the fully three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Formation of Faraday patterns in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

Jasper Smits

The radial trap frequency of an elongated harmonic trap containing a Bose-Einstein condensate is modulated. The free evolution of the condensate fraction is studied using phase-contrast imaging, revealing the dynamics of a single sample over a period of time. Multiple measurement series are combined to study the long-term behavior of samples created under similar experimental conditions. A high-order axial mode, the Faraday pattern, is observed. A simple parametric oscillator model is presented to describe the formation of this axial mode. This model suggests the radial quadrupole mode couples into the high-order axial mode through a parametric resonance. Also, the Faraday pattern is used to determine the speed of sound in the condensate as a function of density. The determined speed of sound deviates up to 20% from the Bogoliubov speed of sound for found densities.

Suppression of Faraday waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an optical lattice

P. Capuzzi, M. Gattobigio, Patrizia Vignolo

We study the formation of Faraday waves in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The waves are parametrically excited by modulating the radial confinement of the condensate close to a transverse breathing mode of the system. For very shallow optical lattices, phonons with a well-defined wave vector propagate along the condensate, as in the absence of the lattice, and we observe the formation of a Faraday pattern. We find that by increasing the potential depth the local sound velocity decreases, and when it equals the condensate local phase velocity, the condensate develops an incoherent superposition of several modes and the parametric excitation of Faraday waves is suppressed.

Faraday patterns in low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Kęstutis Staliūnas, Stefano Longhi, Germán J. de Valcárcel

Excitation of Faraday patterns in the weak confinement space of low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) by a periodic modulation of the trap frequency, ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{\text{tight}}$, in the tight confinement space is shown. For slow modulation the low-dimensional dynamics of the BEC in the weak confinement space is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time modulated nonlinearity coefficient. For increasing modulation frequencies a noticeable reduction of the pattern formation threshold is observed near $2{\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{\text{tight}}$, which is related to the parametric excitation of the internal breathing mode in the tight confinement space. These predictions could be relevant for the experimental excitation of Faraday patterns in BEC.
