Superconductivity in the two‐dimensional Hubbard model?

Abstract

Abstract A refined variational wave function for the two‐dimensional repulsive Hubbard model is studied numerically, with the aim of approaching the difficult crossover regime of intermediate values of U. The issue of a superconducting ground state with d‐wave symmetry is investigated for an average electron density n ≈ 0.8 and for U = 8t. Due to finite‐size effects a clear‐cut answer to this fundamental question has not yet been reached. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

On the BCS‐to‐Bose crossover in 2D anisotropic superconductors

B. Tobijaszewska, R. Micnas

Abstract We analyze the competing pairings and crossover from BCS to local pair (LP) superconductivity for the d ‐wave pairing symmetry in the ground state. The phase diagrams for the extended Hubbard model with intersite electron pairing and hard‐core repulsion (U = ∞) are obtained for the 2D square lattice. The influence of the nnn hopping (t 2) on the crossover is discussed. For appropriate values of the parameters (nnn repulsion) and |t 2/t | < 0.5 the crossover is simultaneous with the vanishing of nodal points in the quasiparticle energy. The vanishing of nodal points is clearly reflected in the evolution of the presented superconducting characteristics. Results for d pairing are compared with those for the crossover in the s*‐wave channel and the role of chiral px + i py states is also discussed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Magnetic and superconducting correlations in the two‐dimensional Hubbard model

W. Metzner, J. Reiss, D. Rohe

Abstract The interplay and competition of magnetic and superconducting correlations in the weakly interacting two‐dimensional Hubbard Model is investigated by means of the functional renormalization group. At zero temperature the flow of interactions in one‐loop approximation evolves into a strong coupling regime at low energy scales, signalling the possible onset of spontaneous symmetry breaking. This is further analyzed by a mean‐field treatment of the strong renormalized interactions which takes into account magnetic and superconducting order simultaneously. The effect of strong correlations on single‐particle properties in the normal phase is studied by calculating the flow of the self‐energy. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Superconductivity in the repulsive Hubbard model

D. Baeriswyl

The two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model has been investigated by a variety of methods, from small to large U. Superconductivity with d-wave symmetry is consistently found close to half filling. After a brief review of the various methods a variational many-electron state is discussed in more detail. This trial state is a natural extension of the Gutzwiller ansatz and provides a substantial improvement thereof.

Bound states in the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model

M. Bąk

Abstract The paper shows how the known, exact results for the two electron bound states can modify the ground state phase diagram of extended Hubbard model (EHM) for on‐site attraction, intersite repulsion and arbitrary electron density. The main result is suppression of the superconducting state in favor of normal phase for small charge densities. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: A variational study

David Eichenberger, D. Baeriswyl

A variational ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice is investigated numerically for an intermediate coupling strength $(U=8t)$ and for moderate sizes (from $6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6$ to $10\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}10$). Our ansatz is superior to other widely used variational wave functions. The results for order parameters and correlation functions provide insight into the antiferromagnetic state at half-filling as well as strong evidence for a superconducting phase away from half-filling.
