Abstract

We use a Chern Simons Landau-Ginzburg (CSLG) framework related to hierarchies of composite bosons to describe 2D harmonically trapped fast rotating Bose gases in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) states. The predicted values for $ν$ (ratio of particle to vortex numbers) are $ν$$=$${{p}\over{q}}$ ($p$, $q$ are any integers) with even product $pq$, including numerically favored values previously found and predicting a richer set of values. We show that those values can be understood from a bosonic analog of the law of the corresponding states relevant to the electronic FQHE. A tentative global phase diagram for the bosonic system for $ν$$

Fractional quantum Hall effect in ultracold rapidly rotating atomic gases

Nicolas Regnault

Ultracold atomic gases in rapidly rotating traps display a wealth of interesting physics. One of the most striking achievements in this field is the observation of th e Abrikosov lattice of vortices. When the rotation frequency is equal to the harmonic trap frequency, the atomic gases is similar to charged particles in a magnetic f ield. It has been predicted that for weak interactions and strong confinement along the rotation axis, this system will exhibit quantum phases equivalent to the one o f the fractional quantum Hall effect. The talk will be focused on bosonic atoms with only one hyperfine species (i.e spinless bosons). We will give numerical evidences of the fractional quantum Hall states in these systems. We will describe how they can be understood using the Laughlin wave function and the Jain's composite fermion theory. We will also discuss about more exotic quantum phases that have also been predicted in such regime. These quantum phases are described by the Read-Rezayi wave functions whose one of the most remarkable properties is that their excitations obey non-abelian statistics.

Composite fermionization of bosons in rapidly rotating atomic traps

Nicolas Regnault

The system of neutral bosons in rapidly rotating atomic trap is equivalent to charged bosons coupled to a magnetic field, which has opened up the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) for bosons interacting with a short range interaction. We present numerical evidences for incompressible liquids at filling fractions ν = 1/2, 2/3, 3/4. Motivated by the composite fermion (CF) theory of the FQHE for electrons, we show how interacting bosons can be mapped into non-interacting spinless fermions carrying one vortex each. This provides an elegant explanation of the fractional quantum Hall states in this system. We use overlap calculations to test how the CF model fits with exact numerical results. At ν = 1, the fermionization appears to overcompensate for the repulsive interaction between bosons producing an attractive interaction between fermions, as evidence by a pairing of fermions. In that case, the Pfaffian state is a good candidate to describe the ground state of such system.

Quantum Hall fractions for spinless bosons

Nicolas Regnault, Th. Jolicœur

We study the quantum Hall phases that appear in the fast-rotation limit for Bose-Einstein condensates of spinless bosonic atoms. We use exact diagonalization in a spherical geometry to obtain low-lying states of a small number of bosons as a function of the angular momentum. This allows us to understand or guess the physics at a given filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}$, the ratio of the number of bosons to the number of vortices. This is also the filling factor of the lowest Landau level. In addition to the well-known Bose-Laughlin state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕2$, we give evidence for the Jain principal sequence of incompressible states at $\ensuremath{\nu}=p∕(p\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)$ for a few values of $p$. There is a collective mode in these states whose phenomenology is in agreement with standard arguments coming, e.g., from the composite-fermion picture. At filling factor 1, the potential Fermi sea of composite fermions is replaced by a paired state, the Moore-Read state. This is most clearly seen from the half-flux nature of elementary excitations. We find that the hierarchy picture does not extend up to the point of transition towards a vortex lattice. While we cannot come to any definite conclusions, we investigate the clustered Read-Rezayi states and show evidence for incompressible states at the expected ratio of flux versus number of Bose particles.

Anyonic excitations in fast rotating Bose gases

A. Lakhoua, Monique Lassaut, Thierry Masson +1 more

The role of anyonic excitations in fast rotating harmonically trapped Bose gases in a fractional quantum Hall state is examined. Standard Chern-Simons anyons as well as ``nonstandard'' anyons obtained from a statistical interaction having Maxwell-Chern-Simons dynamics and suitable nonminimal coupling to matter are considered. Their respective ability to stabilize attractive Bose gases under fast rotation in the thermodynamical limit is studied. Stability can be obtained for standard anyons while for nonstandard anyons, stability requires that the range of the corresponding statistical interaction does not exceed the typical wavelength of the atoms.

Quantum Hall phases and plasma analogy in rotating trapped Bose gases

Nicolas Rougerie, Sylvia Serfaty, Jakob Yngvason

Dedicated to Herbert Spohn on the occasion of his retirement from the TU München A bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect occurs in rapidly rotating trapped Bose gases: There is a transition from uncorrelated Hartree states to strongly correlated states such as the Laughlin wave function. This physics may be described by effective Hamiltonians with delta interactions acting on a bosonic N-body Bargmann space of analytic functions. In a previous paper [RSY] we studied the case of a quadratic plus quartic trapping potential and derived conditions on the parameters of the model for its ground state to be asymptotically strongly correlated. This relied essentially on energy upper bounds using quantum Hall trial states, incorporating the correlations of the Bose-Laughlin state in addition to a multiply quantized vortex pinned at the origin. In this paper we investigate in more details the density of these trial states, thereby substantiating further the physical picture described in [RSY], improvingourenergyestimates andallowing toconsider moregeneral trappingpotentials. Our analysis is based on the interpretation of the densities of quantum Hall trial states as Gibbs measures of classical 2D Coulomb gases (plasma analogy). New estimates on the mean-field

Fractional quantum Hall effect of a rapidly rotating gas of ultracold bosonic atoms

Mohammed Ahmed Ammar, S. Boucherf

The long-term goal of our study is to perform a simulation on a rapidly rotating gas of ultracold bosonic atoms. When the rotation frequency is close to the harmonic trap frequency, the trapping force is compensated by the centrifugal force and only the Coriolis force remains, analogous to the Lorentz force. The quantum Hall effect regime is reached when the number of vortices is larger than the number of atoms. In this work, we demonstrate a variety of excitations of the fractional quantum Hall states of composite fermions and ultracold two-dimensional rapidly rotating bosonic atoms. Second, we can also check directly whether there is a relationship between these two phenomena by calculating the energy of N = 8 bosons in the ground state of the harmonic oscillator and a few-boson elementary excitations for the Bose–Laughlin state at the half filling factor.
