On Spin 1/2 Excitations and Quantum Criticality in Two Dimensional O(3) Antiferromagnets

We show that despite the absence of a Hopf term and zero Berry phase terms, the N`eel ordered phase of 2+1 D quantum antiferromagnets have spin 1/2 excitations, i.e. spinons. The spinons are skyrmion excitations of a topological nature. Since skyrmion gap is proportional to the spin stiffness, quantum criticality corresponds to skyrmion gap collapse. We speculate that skyrmions are relevant at criticality and are, perhaps, related to recent suggestions of critical fractionalization.

Topology-driven deconfined quantum criticality in magnetic bilayers

Sondre Duna Lundemo, Flavio S. Nogueira, Asle Sudbø

Two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets are believed to host phases of matter whose excitations are more fundamental than those of the ordered phases. When combining two such spin systems in a bilayer, strong interaction between the emergent excitations can produce phases not realized in either of its subsystems. We show that the critical fluctuations of a two-dimensional spin-liquid state can induce a deconfined quantum critical point in a proximate antiferromagnet. The most relevant coupling between the associated effective field theories is given by a mixed Chern-Simons term of the emergent gauge fields in each layer. This describes a topological current-current interaction. In contrast to the local spin-spin interaction, it strongly modifies the renormalization group flow of the theory describing the N\'eel--valence-bond-solid transition of the antiferromagnet. In particular, the protected coupling constant associated with it implies nontrivial quantum critical scaling characterized by a nonuniversal power-law divergence of the correlation length in the critical domain and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless divergence approaching it.

Deconfined Criticality and Bosonization Duality in Easy-Plane Chern-Simons Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Vira Shyta, Jeroen van den Brink, Flavio S. Nogueira

Two-dimensional quantum systems with competing orders can feature a deconfined quantum critical point, yielding a continuous phase transition that is incompatible with the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson scenario, predicting instead a first-order phase transition. This is caused by the LGW order parameter breaking up into new elementary excitations at the critical point. Canonical candidates for deconfined quantum criticality are quantum antiferromagnets with competing magnetic orders, captured by the easy-plane CP^{1} model. A delicate issue however is that numerics indicates the easy-plane CP^{1} antiferromagnet to exhibit a first-order transition. Here we show that an additional topological Chern-Simons term in the action changes this picture completely in several ways. We find that the topological easy-plane antiferromagnet undergoes a second-order transition with quantized critical exponents. Further, a particle-vortex duality naturally maps the partition function of the Chern-Simons easy-plane antiferromagnet into one of massless Dirac fermions.
