Entanglement entropy in collective models

Abstract

We discuss the behaviour of the entanglement entropy of the ground state in various collective systems. Results for general quadratic two-mode boson models are given, yielding the relation between quantum phase transitions of the system (signalled by a divergence of the entanglement entropy) and the excitation energies. Such systems naturally arise when expanding collective spin Hamiltonians at leading order via the Holstein–Primakoff mapping. In a second step, we analyse several such models (the Dicke model, the two-level Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer model, the Lieb–Mattis model and the Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick model) and investigate the properties of the entanglement entropy over the whole parameter range. We show that when the system contains gapless excitations the entanglement entropy of the ground state diverges with increasing system size. We derive and classify the scaling behaviours that can be met.

Many-particle entanglement in the gaped antiferromagnetic Lipkin model

Razmik G. Unanyan, C. Ionescu, Michael Fleischhauer

Bipartite and global entanglement are analyzed for the ground state of a system of $N$ spin-$1∕2$ particles interacting via a collective spin-spin coupling described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. Under certain conditions, which include the special case of supersymmetry, the ground state can be constructed analytically. In the case of antiferromagnetic coupling and for an even number of particles, the system has a finite energy gap and the ground state undergoes a smooth transition, as a function of the continuous anisotropy parameter $\ensuremath{\gamma}$, from a separable $(\ensuremath{\gamma}=\ensuremath{\infty})$ to a maximally entangled state $(\ensuremath{\gamma}=0)$. From the analytic expression for the ground state, the bipartite entanglement between two subsets of spins as well as the global entanglement are calculated. Despite the absence of a quantum phase transition a discontinuous change of the scaling of the bipartite entanglement with the number of spins in the subsystem is found at the isotropy point $\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$: While at $\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$ the entanglement grows logarithmically with the system size with no upper bound, it saturates for $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\ne}0$ at a level only depending on $\ensuremath{\gamma}$.

Entanglement and quantum phase diagrams of symmetric multi-qubit systems

Manuel Calixto, Octavio Castaños, E. Romera

Abstract For general symmetric multi-qubit systems, the behavior of one- and two-qubit entanglement for Dicke, spin coherent and parity-adapted (even and odd) spin coherent states is determined. These quantum correlations are quantified by linear and von Neumann entropies of the corresponding one- and two-qubit reduced density matrices of the multi-qubit system. These states play a fundamental role in the study of Hamiltonian systems written in terms of collective generators of the angular momentum algebra like, for example, the Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick (LMG) model. Here we shall use these entanglement measures as a signature to characterize the different quantum phases that appear in these models.

Entanglement entropy in quasi-symmetric multi-qubit states

Zhihua Li, An Min Wang

We generalize the symmetric multi-qubit states to their q-analogs, whose basis vectors are identified with the q-Dicke states. We study the entanglement entropy in these states and find that entanglement is extruded towards certain regions of the system due to the inhomogeneity aroused by q-deformation. We also calculate entanglement entropy in ground states of a related q-deformed Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick (LMG) model and show that the singularities of entanglement can correctly signify the quantum phase transition points for different strengths of q-deformation.

Eigenstate entanglement in integrable collective spin models

Meenu Kumari, Alvaro Martin Alhambra

The average entanglement entropy (EE) of the energy eigenstates in non-vanishing partitions has been recently proposed as a diagnostic of integrability in quantum many-body systems. For it to be a faithful characterization of quantum integrability, it should distinguish quantum systems with a well-defined classical limit in the same way as the unequivocal classical integrability criteria. We examine the proposed diagnostic in the class of collective spin models characterized by permutation symmetry in the spins. The well-known Lipkin-Meshov-Glick (LMG) model is a paradigmatic integrable system in this class with a well-defined classical limit. Thus, this model is an excellent testbed for examining quantum integrability diagnostics. First, we calculate analytically the average EE of the Dicke basis {|j,m⟩}m=−jj in any non-vanishing bipartition, and show that in the thermodynamic limit, it converges to 1/2 of the maximal EE in the corresponding bipartition. Using finite-size scaling, we numerically demonstrate that the aforementioned average EE in the thermodynamic limit is universal for all parameter values of the LMG model. Our analysis illustrates how a value of the average EE far away from the maximal in the thermodynamic limit could be a signature of integrability.

Finite-Size Scaling Exponents of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model

Sébastien Dusuel, Julien Vidal

We study the ground state properties of the critical Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Using the Holstein-Primakoff boson representation, and the continuous unitary transformation technique, we compute explicitly the finite-size scaling exponents for the energy gap, the ground state energy, the magnetization, and the spin-spin correlation functions. Finally, we discuss the behavior of the two-spin entanglement in the vicinity of the phase transition.

Entanglement entropy, decoherence, and quantum phase transitions of a dissipative two-level system

Karyn Le Hur

The concept of entanglement entropy appears in multiple contexts, from black hole physics to quantum information theory, where it measures the entanglement of quantum states. We investigate the entanglement entropy in a simple model, the spin-boson model, which describes a qubit (two-level system) interacting with a collection of harmonic oscillators that models the environment responsible for decoherence and dissipation. The entanglement entropy allows to make a precise unification between entanglement of the spin with its environment, decoherence, and quantum phase transitions. We derive exact analytical results which are confirmed by Numerical Renormalization Group arguments both for an ohmic and a subohmic bosonic bath. Those demonstrate that the entanglement entropy obeys universal scalings. We make comparisons with entanglement properties in the quantum Ising model and in the Dicke model. We also emphasize the possibility of measuring this entanglement entropy using charge qubits subject to electromagnetic noise; such measurements would provide an empirical proof of the existence of entanglement entropy.
