Dynamical instabilities in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Abstract

In this paper we carry out a stability analysis of the Bloch states of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined to a one-dimensional optical lattice. We consider two concrete systems: a mixture of two hyperfine states of rubidium-87 and a mixture of sodium-23 and rubidium-87. The former is seen to exhibit similar phenomena to a single component condensate while the latter also suffers an instability to phase separation at small Bloch wave vectors. It is shown that sufficiently deep optical lattices can remove this latter instability, potentially allowing immiscible cold atoms species to be held in intimate contact and transported within an experimental system.

Dynamical and energetic instabilities in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Janne Ruostekoski, Zachary Dutton

We study dynamical and energetic instabilities in the transport properties of Bloch waves for atomic multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices in the tight-binding limit. We obtain stability criteria analytically, as a function of superfluid velocities and interaction parameters, in several cases, for two-component and spinor condensates. In the two-species case we find that the presence of the other condensate component can stabilize the superfluid flow of an otherwise unstable condensate and that the free space dynamical miscibility condition of the two species can be reversed by tuning the superfluid flow velocities. In spin-1 condensates, we find the steady-state Bloch wave solutions and characterize their stability criteria. We find that generally more regions of dynamical instability arise for the polar than for the ferromagnetic solutions. In the presence of magnetic Zeeman shifts, we find a richer variety of condensate solutions and find that the linear Zeeman shift can stabilize the superfluid flow in several cases of interest.

Bloch Oscillations of Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

Huai-Qiang Gu, Wang Zhi-cheng, Kang Jin +1 more

We study the Bloch oscillations of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in spin-dependent optical lattices. The influence of the intercomponent atom interaction on the system is discussed in detail. Accelerated breakdown of the Bloch oscillations and revival phenomena are found respectively for the repulsive and attractive case. For both the cases, the system will finally be set in a quantum self-trapping state due to dynamical instability.

Unstable regimes for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

L. De Sarlo, L. Fallani, Jessica Lye +4 more

We report on the experimental characterization of energetic and dynamical instability, two mechanisms responsible for the breakdown of Bloch waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. A clear separation of these two regimes is obtained by performing measurements at different temperatures of the atomic sample. The time scales of the two processes have been determined by measuring the losses induced in the condensate. A simple phenomenological model is introduced for energetic instability while a full comparison is made between the experiment and the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii theory that accounts for dynamical instability.

DYNAMICS OF BEC MIXTURES LOADED INTO THE OPTICAL LATTICE IN THE PRESENCE OF LINEAR INTER-COMPONENT COUPLING

We consider dynamics of a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate, where the components correspond to different hyperfine states of the same sort of atoms. External microwave radiation leads to resonant transitions between the states. The condensate is loaded into the optical lattice. We invoke the tight-binding approximation and examine the interplay of spatial and internal dynamics of the mixture. We show that internal dynamics qualitatively depends on the intra-component interaction strength and the phase configuration of the initial state. We focus attention on two intriguing phenomena occurring at certain values of the parameters. The first phenomenon is the spontaneous synchronization of Rabi oscillations running inside neighboring lattice sites. The other one is demixing of the condensate with formation of immiscible solitons at sufficiently strong nonlinearity. Demixing is preceded by the transient regime with highly irregular behavior of the mixture.

Quasi-2D Bose-Fermi mixtures in an optical lattice

Francesca Ferlaino, Estefania de Mirandés, R. Heidemann +3 more

We give an overview on our current experiments with Bose-Fermi degenerate mixtures in a one dimensional (ID) optical lattice. Our system consists of a Fermi gas of 40 K atoms and a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87 Rb. The two species are simultaneously trapped in a combined magnetic and optical lattice potential. We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of the mixture in a tight lattice and observed a change in the density of states. This is a signature of a quasi two dimensional confinement of the atoms in the lattice sites. We also discuss the mechanical stability of the mixture in presence of the 1D lattice.

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Quantum counterpart of dynamical instability

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Hans Jürgen Korsch, Eva-Maria Graefe

We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation can exhibit dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown that these phenomena are related to Bogoliubov's depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.
