Ground and Excited States of Spinor Fermi Gases in Tight Waveguides and the Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg Model

Abstract

The ground and excited states of a one-dimensional (1D) spin-1/2 Fermi gas (SFG) with both attractive zero-range odd-wave interactions and repulsive zero-range even-wave interactions are mapped exactly to a 1D Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg (LLH) model with delta-function repulsions depending on isotropic Heisenberg spin-spin interactions, such that the complete SFG and LLH energy spectra are identical. The ground state in the ferromagnetic phase is given exactly by the Lieb-Liniger (LL) Bethe ansatz, and that in the antiferromagnetic phase by a variational method combining Bethe ansatz solutions of the LL and 1D Heisenberg models. There are excitation branches corresponding to LL type I and II phonons and spin waves, the latter behaving quadratically for small wave numbers in the ferromagnetic phase and linearly in the antiferromagnetic phase.

Stability of spinor Fermi gases in tight waveguides

Adolfo del Campo, Juan Gonzalo Muga, Marvin D. Girardeau

The two- and three-body correlation functions of the ground state of an optically trapped ultracold spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Fermi gas (SFG) in a tight waveguide [one-dimensional (1D) regime] are calculated in the plane of even- and odd-wave coupling constants, assuming a 1D attractive zero-range odd-wave interaction induced by a 3D $p$-wave Feshbach resonance, as well as the usual repulsive zero-range even-wave interaction stemming from 3D $s$-wave scattering. The calculations are based on the exact mapping from the SFG to a ``Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg'' model with delta-function repulsions depending on isotropic Heisenberg spin-spin interactions, and indicate that the SFG should be stable against three-body recombination in a large region of the coupling constant plane encompassing parts of both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. However, the limiting case of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas, a spin-aligned 1D Fermi gas with infinitely attractive $p$-wave interactions, is unstable in this sense. Effects due to the dipolar interaction and a Zeeman term due to a resonance-generating magnetic field do not lead to shrinkage of the region of stability of the SFG.

Theory of spinor Fermi and Bose gases in tight atom waveguides

Marvin D. Girardeau, Maxim Olshanii

Divergence-free pseudo-potentials for spatially even- and odd-wave interactions in spinor Fermi gases in tight atom waveguides are derived. The Fermi-Bose mapping method is used to relate the effectively one-dimensional fermionic many-body problem to that of a spinor Bose gas. Depending on the relative magnitudes of the even- and odd-wave interactions, the $N$-atom ground state may have total spin $S=0$, $S=N∕2$, and possibly also intermediate values, the case $S=N∕2$ applying near a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance, where the $N$-fermion ground state is space-antisymmetric and spin-symmetric. In this case the fermionic ground state maps to the spinless bosonic Lieb-Liniger gas. An external magnetic field with a longitudinal gradient causes a Stern-Gerlach spatial separation of the corresponding trapped Fermi gas with respect to various values of ${S}_{z}$.

Ground-state and elemental excitations of the one-dimensional multicomponent Fermi gas with delta -function interaction

P. Schlottmann

We consider a gas of fermions with parabolic dispersion and N spin components (or spin S, N=2S+1) with SU(N) symmetry in one dimension interacting via a delta -function potential. The model is integrable and its solution has been obtained by Sutherland in terms of N nested Bethe ansatze. The ground-state Bethe ansatz integral equations are solved numerically for both repulsive and attractive interactions to obtain the energy, the chemical potential, and the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the band filling and the interaction strength. For the repulsive interaction the Fermi gas has the properties of a Luttinger liquid. In the attractive case, on the other hand, the fermions in the ground-state form bound states of up to N fermions of different spin components. The spectrum of elemental charge and spin excitations is derived for the repulsive and attractive situations. The spectrum is discussed in the limits of vanishing interaction strength and very strong coupling. For the repulsive interaction the low-lying charge excitations can be characterized by the Fermi momentum and the Fermi velocity. The range of the spin-wave excitations is correlated with the Fermi momentum of the charges. The spin wave velocity is inversely proportional to the magnetic susceptibility. The spin-wave excitations become soft in the infinite-repulsive-coupling limit. In the attractive case in zero field all excitation branches except that of bound states of N fermions have an energy gap. It requires a finite energy to break these bound states and hence there is no response to a field smaller than a critical field. The low-T specific heat is proportional to the temperature.

Ground State Energy of Dilute Fermi Gases in 1D

Johannes Agerskov, Robin Reuvers, Jan Philip Solovej

We study the one-dimensional spin-$J$ Fermi gas, interacting through a general repulsive 2-body potential, and prove asymptotics of the ground state energy in the dilute limit. The asymptotic behaviour is given in terms of the ground state energy of a spin chain, which is the Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the case of spin-1/2 fermions. We determine similar asymptotics for the Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg model, showing that a product trial state used by Girardeau is not optimal.

Anyon-Fermion Mapping and Applications to Ultracold Gases in Tight Waveguides

Marvin D. Girardeau

The Fermi-Bose mapping method for one-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with zero-range interactions is generalized to an anyon-fermion mapping and applied to exact solution of several models of ultracold gases with anyonic exchange symmetry in tight waveguides: anyonic Calogero-Sutherland model, anyons with point hard-core interaction (anyonic Tonks-Girardeau gas), and spin-aligned anyon gas with infinite zero-range odd-wave attractions (attractive anyonic Tonks-Girardeau, or AATG, gas). It is proved that for even N>or=4 there are states of the AATG gas on a ring, with anyonic phase slips which are odd integral multiples of pi/(N-1), of energy lower than that of the corresponding fermionic ground state. A generalization to a spinor Fermi gas state with anyonic symmetry under purely spatial exchange enables energy lowering by the same mechanism.

Ground-state energy and excitation spectrum of the Lieb-Liniger model : accurate analytical results and conjectures about the exact solution

Guillaume Lang, F. W. J. Hekking, Anna Minguzzi

We study the ground-state properties and excitation spectrum of the Lieb-Liniger model, i.e. the one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions. We solve the Bethe-Ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit by using an analytic method based on a series expansion on orthogonal polynomials developed in and push the expansion to an unprecedented order. By a careful analysis of the mathematical structure of the series expansion, we make a conjecture for the analytic exact result at zero temperature and show that the partially resummed expressions thereby obtained compete with accurate numerical calculations. This allows us to evaluate the density of quasi-momenta, the ground-state energy, the local two-body correlation function and Tan’s contact. Then, we study the two branches of the excitation spectrum. Using a general analysis of their properties and symmetries, we obtain novel analytical expressions at arbitrary interaction strength which are found to be extremely accurate in a wide range of intermediate to strong interactions.
